Part Two: The Wrap and The Race
Justice League is a jaw-dropper. The Phantom graphics instantly pop from the intermingling of styles on the deck and sides. Ryan Beckley, Super Stock racer and sticker master of Kinetic Animation commissioned to do the wrap says, “Don (the team owner) had a concept, he loves the Wild West, old cars and playing card motifs, so I sent him to my high school buddy and graphic designer Seth Mularz from localguydesign.com in Key West. He created the art for all three Justice League raceboats.” (The Cigarette 42 Flatdeck and the short lived Super Cat Skater 388 raced before Justice League as STIHL and Gone Again and after as Dirty Money, before becoming a loss of money when splitting in half at the Great Lakes Grand Prix this summer.)
“I did the set-up work to make the wrap fit on the boat and printed out the designs. Adam Williams, a freelancer with 20 years of experience took over from there. He literally did the installation at Phantom as they were rigging it the last three weeks before Key West. We did bits and pieces as they had it ready, first the deck, and then when it came to the sides, they weren’t smooth enough, or more glass work needed to be done… it was crazy. They wanted to know if we could wrap while the engine hatch was up,” laughs Ryan.
The design was born in Key West and that’s where the boat returned for the ultimate test at the 2023 Key West Worlds, which ended with an overall second place silver triumph. Throttleman Richard Davis explains how the three days of racing went, “It was a brand new boat and we only had two days to dial it in with water pressure, props, etc. We really needed a week. We took a gamble by using the hoses from the Cigarette. We adjusted the water pickups as much as we could, but ended up blowing two hoses.”
“The top hose clamp broke and the bottom clamp couldn’t keep the hose on the fitting for the sea strainer. We fixed that one and put four clamps on. Then, since each motor has its own pickup, on Sunday, the hose coming from the pickup to the other motor to the sea strainer split. For next season, we’ll be changing to hydraulic hoses with fittings that screw onto the sea strainer and the pickups," notes Richard.
Here's to hoping next season JUSTICE IS SERVED... and the Phantom seizes the lead straight to multiple podium victories!
