Igniting aquatic outrage for half of century, it was 1971 when the original Boston Whaler Outrage first hit the H20. I don’t recall the initial model, or 21’ “banana hull,” because I wasn’t born yet. But what I do remember growing up as a kid who spent more time in the water than out – the unsinkable branded boat was a symbol synonymous with the New England seaside. Boston Whalers were seen sailing up and down Long Island Sound swells all day long, and come nightfall were nestled on trailers in yards and marinas, not only all over Connecticut, but in reality down the entire Eastern Seaboard from Canada to Key West.

Fifty years into the future and double the size, today the Outrage measures 42 feet and moves $1.4 million from your wallet; it also slots at the pinnacle of the podium in the Boston Whaler sport fish machine portfolio, since being introduced in 2015. And like fine wine, the full-of-flavor flagship has grown more delectable over the decades. Maybe the 420 Anniversary Edition should be called Outrageous!

To see the fury and feel the wrath of the 2021 Anniversary Edition, the East Coast tour included an August kickoff in New York City at Chelsea Piers, a homecoming reunion in Quincy, Massachusetts where the 50-year-old model is still in use by the Marine Biological Laboratory, and a final stop at the famous Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Enthusiasts might also remember laying eyes on the 30,000-pound powerhouse flexing its big guns on legendary Lake X, as part of the Mercury Marine V12 600-hp outboard collective. (More details on the revolutionary 600s here: https://www.luxurycenterconsoles.co...ole-amelioration-at-the-palm-beach-boat-show/.)

Bedecked with three of the new quiet giants dishing out a documented top speed of 64 mph (60 mph with a flybridge tower) – the celebratory 1,800-hp edition cleaves through the seas crushing crests like a champ. Apart from unmatched fuel efficiency extracted from the game-changing engines, the larger 700-gallon gas tank also eliminates refueling hassles on longer journeys.

Visual tweaking extends past the color-matched cowlings, given how the black hardtop frame and grab rails, Sea Gray color scheme and teak finishes pair together simply elevating the Outrage to new heights, making you feel like you stepped foot onto a motor yacht. Teak accenting is carried from bow to stern in stellar fashion as showcased on the hydraulically controlled table and cup holders, helm deck and second row seating backsides and footrests, and the lower gunwale rod holder shelves.

And while it may appear the 420 caters to the luxury center console Sunday sandbar sort, all you have to do is take a look at the competition outriggers and rod holders found all around including down in the cabin, to see its heart and soul has been forged with the fisherman in mind. Behind the helm and dashboard outfitted with triple 16-inch monitors is a deluxe leaning post-turned-bait prep area with an insulated 45-gallon aquarium bait Jacuzzi center stage, an aft galley sink to port and a grill to starboard. Additionally, the Anniversary Edition features multiple drawers of tackle storage, designated slots for knifes and pliers, mesh totes for tucking in more goods… and best for last is, the FROSTBOX refrigeration system to keep your catches, colas and Coronas cold.

However, thanks to some innovative engineering and craftsmanship, the real mezzanine party trick reveals itself with a simple rotating flip. And presto! Just like that, behind the front row of swiveling captain chairs the cockpit is reshaped with a second row bench for three providing elevated vistas of the sea. Want an even better view of the horizon? Head to the upper station, the flybridge features a full helm control box with VesselView screen and DTS throttle and shift, flip-up bolster seating for three and a forward sunpad.

A Seakeeper gyrostabilizer does its part removing the rock-n-roll when venturing into the deep blue, whilst, adding to the stability under your feet is a cool feeling of tranquility on those scorching hot days, thanks to the 18,000-BTU air conditioning system. If fresh air is what you seek... stretching out on the wrap-around bow, or forward sun lounger designed with sculptured headrests, textured ridges and cool touch fabric, will make you want to stay all day.

After a full-day stay in the sunlight, the cabin form definitely strays away from the traditional Boston Whaler norm. Darker aesthetics incorporated into the décor of the lower quarters tend to aggrandize the area encouraging guests to grab some down time below maybe catching a flick on the 28” flat-screen HDTV, or whipping up some goodies in the starboard galley.

Beams of natural light from a set of windows with opening port lights grace the space, and are further brightened from the glowing lower border LEDs on the floor. Behind the closed door, a private head with rain shower becomes the main attraction when it's time to freshen up for that dockside dinner. Nodding out for a nap, or the night, happens for four on the convertible double berth and pull-out settee.

Nobody summarized this magnificent boat better than Boston Whaler President Nick Stickler when he referred to the Outrage 420 Anniversary Edition as a pure expression on a plane of its own, “The boat is a powerful next-generation offshore cruiser combining superior comfort and capability with enhanced style and unsurpassed performance.”

In a 1970 “Outrage” prototype on trial ad in Motor Boating, Boston Whaler described it as: A big luxurious outboard boat; – for people who want more than a bigger image. A half a century later, we can agree the boat builder’s goal has been achieved... and then some!
