Just picked up this new to me boat.
Found it out on Long Island.
Ran out there, took it for a test drive and decided I wanted it.

I have never liked glued down carpet in a boat. Pita to keep clean, it's usually a dark color, so it gets hot. (Yes, even here in the frozen tundra)
So...
Today I'm removing the interior, and tearing up the carpet. Because it's an outboard, there really isn't much of the way of rigging, but what is here will get redone to my liking/standards. There isn't much "wrong" with what's here, per se, just could use some cleaning up.

Got a good start on the demo. I just sat in it for an hour just coming up with how I want into look when I'm done. It'll have a lot in common with the baja. I like how my dash looks in that boat. There will be a few differences though. ;)

You can see what I mean about the hatch. Strangest thing I've ever seen.

Carpet adhesive is a pain in the arse to get rid of. Threw a 60 grit sanding disk on the 7"... made quick work of the floor.

I hit it with the dynabrade orbital 120 grit to get rid of the grinding marks. Gotta yank the hatch, then clean up on either side of it. Then the inner vertical panels. Shouldn't take too long.

Sometimes you need a really big compass.

I layed out a crude ellipse, and didn't care for it. I like the radius better.

Derigging to be able to clean up the bilge. So far, I like working on the outboard vs the sterndrive. Way easier to access EVERYTHING.

Built an engine stand today. I haven't welded the casters on the bottom of it yet because I am going to sandblast it in preparation for paint.

Most of my boating life was wrenching on outboards. Its so easy...like working on an engine stand....compared to my I/O and all of the outdrive issues. (f'ing Bravos)

Looks like your project will be ready for summer at this pace!

A lot of folks say that outboards are gay....those are the same folks bent over with their asses in the air working in their inboards.

I'm not that familiar with the different lowers that are available on outboards.
Something just looked weird where the water pickup holes should be. I took a wire wheel cup to the spot, and sure enough. Bondo. Ok, keep going. I was ok with the pipe plugs. The bottom 4 holes were plugged with wads of paper.
What a douchebag move. Don't know If it was the previous owner, or some jackass he had do work on it. Can't wait to find what else was done half assed .

You're goddamned right I'm pissed about it. Asshole.

That sux!
Are outboards supposed to have water pickups?
I've never had an outboard, so honestly i probably wouldnt have noticed something out of place either.

Different lowers have water pickups in different spots. I think this is a torquemaster lower. It originally had dual. There's pickups on the front of the bullet, and 8 holes on either side. If it's setup with a high X, it's fairly common to plug the side holes with a 1/16" pipe plug, and only use the low pickup. This is just a shitty example of piss poor workmanship. I'd like to kick the fucker that did it right in his sack. Now I gotta wonder if one of the chunks of paper are clogging a water passage in the block.

FOCK!

You’re engine either has a fleet master or torque master. Biggest giveaway is the cav plate. The “tail” on the fleet master is much smaller.

Like you said plugging the holes is very common to keep water pressure while running a high X.

Looking forward to what you do with it

You can make sort of a low water pickup by grinding some channels from the tip of the bullet to the lower water pickup holes, and filling the rest with epoxy. One hole on each side will supply plenty of water to keep it cool.

I'm pretty sure this a Fleetmaster with a fat shaft. I don't know if it's available that way stock or not. This case has never been silver, and doesn't have a cambered skeg, that's why I believe it's a Fleetmaster.

Blocking the up portion of the water pickups on the the older lowers was common. This was done to increase water pressure. At least they didn’t do this!

The gel in the bilge has the texture of cottage cheese. I don't care for that look on a girls ass, or a bilge...;)

Flap disc is making short work of flattening it out. I'll give it some attention with the d.a. too.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that...it is completely reversible if you change setup or put the engine on another boat. Quite common practice, actually.

I'm guessing you don't like the look of the 1/16" NPT pipe plugs?

I was wondering what he meant by that also...
Didn't think it was a derogatory comment, in as much as the pipe plugs, or if he was referring to the fact that only half were plugged?

Damifiknow....

2007. The decals have been replaced on the cowl also. It is not a PRO XS model.
It's a xs. And there is a difference.

Did the seller disclose that or is that what you figured out later?

Merc has 5 different 250 horse outboards right now. Sounds like that's gonna change shortly but it would take me a little while to figure out which one I was looking at without the stickers as most sellers aren't gonna be comfortable with me opening it up to see what size the gearcase is etc...

Start changing model years and to be honest I'm not sure I could tell what I was looking at without a pair of calipers...

I would sell it and buy a new 300XS with warranty. They are going to be tough to get next year.

I'm running this motor for this year. It's getting a 400R and a jackplate next season. The transom will not support it in its current form. This will be a 2 year build project. I'm rigging it the way I want it to be when it's finished, in as much as electronics, helm location, seating arrangements, etc.
This winter will see a proper transom and the deletion of this ridiculous setback bracket.

Porta Bracket would be ideal. Scott knows his stuff.
