What are some of the more efficient hulls out there (21’-28’)that require little HP to get high MPH? What are some of the turds out there that just don’t like to go fast no matter what combo you throw at them?

liberator I believe is one that is light and fast, and a slow one prob any of those 80's day cruisers that have like 4 steps on the bow....campbells are heavy but I have heard of some fast ones

Kinda like say'n what are the best Hammers.... you have to pick the right tool for the job. that's when you will be the most efficient,,.quality of the build is where lines are drawn...

Agreed!
There are some hulls that will work great up to a certain mph, but trying to push them beyond their threshold may produce a “shit your pants” effect. If you’re lucky;)

The OP needs to clarify his intent and goals.
There’s also a question of what the OP considers high speed?
Some folks have a different definition of fast.
I think 60 is plenty fast enough.
For others life doesn’t get fun till after the buck twenty mark.

Daytona's, Cougars, Talons, etc. For 22' and under tunnels.

If you are looking for a v-hull, Velocity's have an efficient hull. Google Velocity Powerboats, Steve Stepp, and Stepp Bottom.

What HP range and what mph range are you looking for?

21' or 24' Skater. Single or twin motors depending on budget. Seems like the perfect combo for speed and performance and the ability to handle some choppier water.

I’m not looking at the moment. This is more for educational and boat talk purposes. Thanks for all the responses!

Some generalizations that will probably start some debate...

True tunnel (Skater, Silverwing, F1 boats) Most efficient. Bigger tunnels like the skater handle rough water better than a center pod boat. Best turning of any boat. These boats need a cushion of air to work well. Speeds under 35 mph in a small tunnel usually means your taking water over the bow. The bigger tunnels like a Skater will have a mph range where they porpoise but you can drive through it.

Centerpod Tunnel (Daytona, Nordic, DCB, Talon) A little less efficient, but handle slower speeds much better than a true tunnel with the additional buoyancy of the center pod. Still handle great. Some porpoise some don't.

Small Tunnel V (Nordic Sebring, Schiada RT, Stoker) A little less efficient as there is more wet running surface not the best rough water boat.

Stepped V (Howard, Lavey, Eliminator, Hallett, Nordic, Cigarette, and pretty much every modern boat being built today) A little less efficient than a tunnel hull but handle rough water well and can be very fast. Most hulls use multiple steps, some use vents, some use a pad some don't. Every hull has its strengths and weaknesses.

Straight V (Steps were implemented in the 90's by most of the west coast builders and there are very few straight bottom boats being built out west, Modern examples of straight V's are Bertram, Blackfin, pretty much anything designed to take a pounding in the big blue) Less efficient than everything else but are the rough water kings.

The real mark of efficiency is the lack of wetted surface at speed. Most builders nowadays have different ways for introducing air to the underside of a boat. Be it through a tunnel, a step, a vent, dimples like a golf ball, etc... The more air you can get under the hull the more efficient the hull will be. The trade off is handling and rough water capability/ride. There are a few who have gotten it right while some are still working on it.

If it's just for boat talk/bench racing purposes...check out this video of the new Tuff 24 with a stock Evenirude G2 250 outboard. They just kissed 100 mph (99 mph officially I think)

It's hard to get much more efficient than 99 mph in 24 footer with a stock 250...at least in a v hull.

I've posted this before, but check out how much air is under the hull at speed -

I ran 105 with a single 300xs at slightly over 3000 feet elevation on my Trick (21 Skater hull). There is guys who have ran over 110 at sea level.

I ran 110 in a 32 skater with twin 300xs on the back with bravo props (not top speed props) yesterday in havasu! We cruised at 80-85 the whole day

An STV has to be one of the most efficient hulls I've ever heard of. I've seen videos of them with a 3 to 400 horse 2.5 on it running well over 120.
Schiadas are hard to beat. They go as fast on the trailer as you want to pull em, and they get the same mileage as the tow vehicle.
I was gonna say, even though they ride and handle VERY well, a Schiada RC V-drive has to be one of the least efficient hulls made.

Who has the 21 Skater mold now? I remember seeing it somewhere and the builder developed a center pod option for it and a couple different sizes of it as well.

28 Skater / 300X's running against the current up past the 40. Boat was also heavy on fuel and had normal gear in it (anchors etc...). I have no doubt the boat would have touched 120 in better conditions and less weight. Great hull!

The STV's are incredibly light. Full Throttle Powerboats are building them now from 325 lbs with Kevlar and Carbon to 600 lbs standard layup and a bunch of options in between. A single seat river rocket has always been on the wish list.

Screaming eagle has a 22 trick which I believe is the same mold as the 21 skater. They added a foot to the length and widened it a bit. They actually have that mold up for sale.

Muskoka Lakes, north of Toronto. Amazing boating....3 months out the year.
To the west is Georgian Bay...10,000 islands area...aka the "freshwater Carribean". Have to see it to believe if if you are used to West Coast reservoirs.

I sure wish stoker built more of the 26s, they are impossible to find

I have first hand experience with Stoker SST. I was on the lake in early 90's in my 19' Commander Cobra w/200HP LE Suzuki OB. A 21' Stoker Sport Tunnel w/Merc OB(similar HP,don't remember model) idled along side me. We nodded at each other and dropped hammers….I was seeing nothing but open lake up to 60-65mph(near max speed and loose) then SST guy looked over at me and waved, then gave me nice view of ass end of his SST OB carving bad water beyond. Those mofo's flat out run…..BTW

It's not the absolute most efficient boat but I've driven the Lavey Craft 28 Evo to 105 MPH with a single Ilmor 710

Does anyone remember Goosebumps that used to run up and down the river? Sounded great going by with the 2 stroke motors buzzing, 25 Motion?
Carson used to work on them I believe, there was a second yellow one too?

The v-bottom hulls with the pads are efficient boats for sure. Tuff, Allison, Paramount, etc. Depending on where you boat, you may or may not have the glassy water conditions to hang the boat out on the pad for 4 minutes straight. So then you have to see how well the boat handles the water under your normal boating conditions. I still think the Skaters are the best bang for the buck in the 21-28' hull sizes.

I love my tunnels over the years, small power big numbers!

But....

My 21’ wing is estimated to rip up to 130+ with the setup I’m doing, we shall see though?

Rocking a solid banks 850TT on a Crower clutch and Smc Zero loss air shiftable transmission, and a Merc SSM outdrive!

I ran over 100 in mine at havasu...put it on the trailer with a for sell sign... lot of seat time for me to get there...never ever felt safe..

That's flying in a 32' is it a 32B with the wider tunnel? Curious to learn, that's a big boat to get 110. Best we've seen in our 308 is 103 but we LOVE ours.

What motors are you running? Are you running jack plates?

When I bought my 28 the boat did not have jack plates (Peter was against running them at the time). Installed low water pick up's, jack plates and raised the motor height. First time in the water after the mods, the boat ran 8 MPH faster. I have seen new 28's coming from the factory with jack plates, so maybe Peter is not opposed to them anymore.
