So I figured I would start a build thread on the new project as the 21 Daytona project switched gears and now will be on its way to Washington to become a blown jet boat.

I picked up this 1998 Edge Stealth from Harrison Stepp who races the same type of hull with twin turbos and runs in the 140 mph range. My wife, dad and I jumped in the truck and made the 1000 mile trip from WI down to Oklahoma to bring home the next need for speed project.

So definitely not the best time of the year to pull a boat home across that distance but it made it and after a trip to the local car wash and some elbow grease it was looking good again.

Even my two boys want dad to hurry up and complete the boat to go for a spin!

Now on to the disassembly.......

So I am finding that even though it looks great every boat has its issues that each owner over the years made their own little additions some good and some bad.

Only 1 chip on the whole top deck and my plan is to stop over to a local boat builder that worked on my 21 and color match the gell.

6B1C6ACA-1770-4116-87F2-48CB47BC60F2.jpeg

Did find some air void chips that from what I have been told are very common to the tunnel hull boats that are hand laid up. The edge is very tough to get the glass into and when it cures out it pulls away and you get a void where only gell is left, one bump against the trailer or onto a sandbar and whamo they chip out.

When the boat gets flipped over I will address this and it will look good as new....just add it to the growing list!

Funny what you can find on the web like old pics of the boat with a different bowl, nozzle and wheel. Looks like it was called “Over the Edge” at one time. I was thinking about calling it “Bad Habit” as boats seem to be where any extra money goes....

So I first rigged up the boat to my gantry and weighed it with everything installed less the motor.

So we have 1014 lbs and that’s with a very heavy battery.

Should make the boat around a mid 600 lbs hull (glass only)

I have known Duane from HI-Techperformance since around 2005 and consider him a good friend. He has always been a big help and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to anything jet boat. He helped me build my 21 Daytona along with Ervin Capps doing the race bottom and man that thing ran out nice when it was done!

Now it’s time for the new build and things have changed greatly since I sold that boat back in 2008.

New technology, new intakes, stronger suction housings, better larger bowls.....the list goes on and on. Duane has helped me get back up to speed with what I should be using in relation to the high horsepower expectations with my new build. I was hoping to use the pump that was in it but after a closer look it just won’t cut it anymore.

Currently it’s a Meirsch low pro intake “1st generation”, aggressor suction, Jetaway, B stainless impeller, Berkeley JG bowl, AT droop and AT nozzle with insert.

Not exactly sure what loader brand this is but wow is it heavy!

New loader will be a Chrome Molly low profile deal from Duane.

Also ordered some structural aluminum channel to build my ride plate out of.

Well this is bad news, pulled the pump apart and sure enough the shaft has been twisted
You can see the twist right after where the Jetaway attaches.

Not sure what purpose this brace served but it should of been going to the front of the intake housing to support it from all the leverage that is put on these pumps.
30DAE497-0301-44CB-A6DB-DB6001F51D2C.jpeg

Time for a new brace, orderd up the bare part from Duane and cut it to fit along with drilling and taping bolts in place.

I was lucky to have my oldest help out in the process!

So after some careful measurements it was determined that the intake was set 1/16” at a tilt.... not good!! Also the intake must have been tightened down too soon before the epoxy had set completely causing the sides along it to bow and create a slight hook.

So looks like the intake will have to come out and get reset along with the keel that is now old technology and has too great of a bubble at the entry to the intake at the loader pad.

Shoe currently is a 1 degree tapered shoe and probably not what I will end up with in the end though each one will be custom for this intake due to a odd bolt pattern that was done on the Meirsch intakes.

Whe going through the wiring I found too many taps and butt connectors for my liking so I started to remove the wiring and glad I did! Along the port side where the wire loom was run the factory installed stainless machine screws with zip tie holders, great idea however over time the wires rubbed on the machine screws that were too long and this could of ended up in a fire!

That’s the battery, ground and starter lead that are all wore through.

So the hull is now stripped down to only the steering helm and cable, the forward reverse shifter and cable, the pump intake, 3 bilge pumps, gauges and the angle brackets for the motor and seats.

Weighed it all again and came up with approximately 640 lbs for just the glass hull. Should make a good river rocket boat!

Nice thread!

Hard to believe there's as much serious boat surgery going on in Central WI as there is. Your attention to detail is definitely going to pay off on this. I'm not as versed in jets but know enough to be dangerous. I'll be following your progress and we'll have to make it a point to see each other on the water!

That picture of your son on the drill press with his safety glasses on and tongue hanging out is priceless. My good work buddy has one of his son about the same age gapping rings for the 632 out of his Top Sportsman car and it's identical; safety glasses on, tongue hanging out! There is no better way to get them interested than to get them involved.

That hook has too clean of an angle change to not be intentional, don't you think? It's funny how I can relate to the level being used for straightedge pix. :p

What are your plans for power?

It will take some time for sure, I bet yours will have many hours on it by the time mine hits the water! Time and money both of which are of short supply lately.....

The hook was due to the intake being tightened down too soon before the epoxy that bonds it to the hull was completely cured. This in turn pulled up on the hull and created that small hook. Apparently someone was rushing the install job back in the day.

Regarding power, I’m shooting for BBC and it’s too soon to tell what direction I go but a power adder will be in its future for sure. I liked the 540 ci size I had in my last jet. I do like the turbos though also am interested in centrifugal supercharging. Possibly 14/71 roots also it’s just too soon to say and my fear is $$$$ will be the deciding factor.

I try to get both boys interested in working on things, my youngest I think though may be the one with racing in his blood. Always wants rides in the vette and 4 wheeler, first pass in this boat I will probably never get him out of it!

So there was some more destruction tonight. Pulled the low profile intake out of the hull and it came out a little easier then expected due to the rear 1/3 of the epoxy being cracked and soaked in oil from a previous motor.

Awesome project! This hull from Tom Papp is one of the sexiest boats on the water. I used to stop by his shop all the time and drool over whatever it was he was building. He was always a gentleman and never complained when this "Kid" would stop by and bother him during business hours. Hahaa! He is missed. The two I liked the most were the dove grey Stealth and the purple Stealth he did with about 12-14 colors. Both were beautiful! Anyways thank you for sharing your project; it will be fun to watch!

I hope I will be able to do this hull justice.
Do you happen to know how many were built in 98? I have not seen another one with these colors yet but these hulls seem to be popping up every now and again for sale and I try to save a few pictures of each different one I see.

Well after allot of research and advice I ordered up a new MPD intake and Dominator HD suction for the stealth. I purchased it all through Duane at Hi-TechPerformance who matched the suction to the intake and setup the shoe shims. The intake is drilled for checking keel vacuum and is a 5 degree low profile.
Duane also added all of the required ports for datalogging the pump.

No Sir I am sorry I don't know how many were built but I'm sure there are others who could give you a better idea than me. I just remember the dove gray hull and when I saw it, I immediately fell in love. ;)

Finally had time to clean up the boat and trailer as it was salty roads when we brought it back from Oklahoma. Next step is to stop out to see John Johnson at Recon boats to color match the orange so I can touchup a few chips on the bottom when it’s upside down for bottom work.

The color matched gel coat arrived and today was time to repair the chip on the transom edge.

Ground out the area around the chip and wiped down with acetone.

Added the gel coat then taped wax paper over it to achieve the contour of the hull. (Wax paper is under blue tape)

Results before sanding

Wet sanded and last the rubbing compound, it’s not perfect but good for my first go around.

At least this was a little practice before I tackle the chips on the bottom edge of the sponsons next month.

Gel coat was from squiggle tool out of MN, Scottie did a great job matching the color and delivered it to my door next day.

Now that it’s over I took the round shaft section of a screwdriver and rolled it down the inner edge of each sponson which killed me to cause more damage but the tiny air pockets left from the original build can pop open like the few that did already from previous owners bumping the trailer so I figured do it now!
I filled them in with fiberglass filler then used the color matched gel coat to match the bottom.

Best thread on RDP. A lot goes into doing what we do.

Looking forward to updates [emoji106]

Thanks, I’ll try to keep posting though time and money will slow the progress for a bit. A piece at a time and I’ll get there!

So time now to finish up the two spots on the front of the left sponson and the removal of the speedo pickup on the transom before my color matched gel goes bad and the temps drop to low around here....

Ground out the silicon and roughed up the surface for some fiberglass filler, I will glass the inside after this part is completed.

I had two spots on the front edge of the sponson that was too thin to brush on gel so looks like it will have to get sprayed, this will be the last of the air void spots that I found when the boat was upside down.

So we shot the gel coat tonight, definitely a different experience compared to base coat clear coat. I brought the old man out of retirement to see if he’s still got it

We mixed up 4 oz of color matched gel coat with MEKP @ 2% as it was a little cool out (about 65 in the shop) and added 10cc of acetone to help it flow better.

Made 3 coats, the second coat we ran about 8cc of acetone for a thicker coverage and the final about 12cc which helped it lay down a little nicer. This was using a gel coat touch up gun and it seemed to work good for the first time out.

I ordered another quart just in case we would run low but we made it barely with what I had left from the bottom work. I’m sure I can find a use for the orange gel just didn’t want to run out!

Hey, with the temps we are coming into, make sure you somehow keep it 62° or more in there, 70° is even better. I’d let it sit at least 24 hours for sure before sanding, though, and maybe 36.

I don’t have any experience with the waxed gel, just unwaxed with Duratec plus a coating of PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) to seal it from air so it can cure. The waxed version they coated my floor with was sticky 2 weeks later, there are footprints from my socks when I started working on rigging.

Cool that you got your dad involved (with photographic evidence!:D).

Looking good!

No worries it was 67 last night in the shop and I checked it this morning before I left for work and it was rock hard. Started the sanding tonight and definitely sanded hard.

Only issue is the area on the transom where I tried to stop the patch from new to old created too much of a shadow line transition that we are now going to sand and shoot the whole lower section of the transom end to end so it looks better, the existing gel was too thin next to the new that it was starting to wear down and shadow. The old speedometer patch looks great though.

Going to have to run a heater in the shop before we spray again though I remember mixing up resin for glass work on my vette in a 30 degree shop and it still kicked though probably wasn’t the best of ideas at the time.

So after wet sanding until my arm almost fell off I think the front sponson repair will pass.
BB226D92-FB22-4771-8CA6-AF8DB0714886.jpeg

Now the transom just won’t cut it so I removed everything and we are going to spray it from end to end below the 5e rub rail.

Also found a little time to mix up some resin and make a few touch ups from previous owner chips and where I removed the speedometer tube pickup from along with the area where we moved the intake farther back in the bilge.

I did consider Calgo steering but for what I’m doing the current setup will work just fine. The guy I bought my boat from runs a stealth with a turbo bbc making over 2000 hp and has the same steering setup I do.

Then it was back to getting the front pump brace to fit to the new intake. At some point I will have to take all the raw aluminum parts back out for either paint or powder coating but they need to be in for now to figure out where it will all end up.

So I finished up the other half and installed the steering back into the transom. Most of the brackets and plates will be removed later after everything is installed where it needs to go and I’m sure I won’t need to drill any additional mounting holes or brackets then off to powder coating.

Next in line is figuring out a support for the front of the jet pump suction, so I mocked up the new Jetaway 2 from HITech so I have an idea of what needs to be cleared.

When everything is apart I plan to place an order for nice looking aluminum red anodized washers and more stainless ARP fasteners but for now whatever is laying around the shop to mock it up will have to do, hence the ugly fender washers g8 nuts.

A little fabrication today on the front suction brace.

28AFA8A9-F97E-44D8-9978-AD522F47FBDE.jpeg

I plan to round the edges, cut back the corners and maybe cut out some holes like the front brace but out of time for today.
43A6328B-FD68-4F59-96B8-59A976100E98.jpeg

Probably getting to technical using the laser to locate center on everything but better off to make it as close as possible. Center is based off the keel and the intake not necessarily the stringers or existing brackets as I found they were close but not perfect. The boat only cares about how it rides on the water in relation to the keel and intake with the exception of the motor lining up properly with the pump so with a given center line marked inside the hull I can take more accurate dimensions for rigging.

Once again RDP reminds me how little talent I have. You are doing an outstanding job on this restoration. I need to add you to the list of "if he ever sells a boat, BUY IT!"

Thanks for the kind words, this project will take longer then I would like as time and money, a planned addition on our house soon and 2 kids growing at full speed will affect how soon it will hit the water I am making sure to do it right the first time and hopefully have allot of fun when it’s done!
