I’m not a bug guy, lol.
And I’m a bit confused?
Buggy has a single 40 on it, car has not run since I’ve owned it.
I’ve soaked it, cleaned it, applied the parts within a rebuid kit.
But.
It appears a top plate is missing?
I have a gasket from the rebuilt kit with only one mate.

An exploded view shows a top plate.
Stock photos from the inter web show this carb without the top plate and short stacks.
I would like to run a simple, effective K&N filter.

What do I need to do or get?

Another thing I notice, in the stock photos these two jets are elevated, where mine are well down into the body?

Does look odd, here is a pic of one of my filthy 44 IDF carbs, working on installing my new air cleaner set up as we speak.

My main jets look like 47-50 in your exploded view.

Mine do to when out of the carb.
Can you get a pic looking down on the top?
I see a gasket on top. Is that straight to air cleaner?

Yes.

Some people you know make billet air cleaner housings. ;)

...and was the very part they started their company with. :)

Yours, does look like it was set up abit diffrent than usual with the short emulsion tubes and jet stacks. He may have been trying to fit that carb without cutting the body. I ran a single weber on my Manx and had to make a decent cut into the fiberglass to fit the air cleaner below is a pict of my carb, the top is the same as yours, just a gasket than the air cleaner base. Real important that the base seal is perfect. One grain of sand in those jets has a big effect on how they run. If you can swing it I would try to find another similar carb and short manifolds and go with duals. The power will be much smother. the single carbs with the vw ignition are a challenge to tune without an off idle flat spot.

I’ve been told by the old schoolers a layer of white grease between the filter and base/lid is the trick on sand.

Gelcoater I have a couple of tall K&N air filters if you are interested. See photos. I may also have the base plate for the linkage, but would need to go to my storage to look around. I have a small stash of vw parts. Let me know if there is something you are looking for. I am trying to clean house a bit.

I appreciate that!
I’ve stalled a bit. Once I get the intake back on and carb on it I’ll do some measuring.
I suspect the tall filter may be too tall to clear the body. Maybe not?

If not, I hay have the standard K&N's and lids for you, I don't have the base plates though. Let me know if you need them.
