You can either get with the times or be left behind...
My two older ones(14 and 12) have "not so" smart phones. Old, cheap, but some ability. They are checked randomly, and charged on the kitchen counter. No social media for either. Am I too strict on my "Urban Amish" theory? Time will tell.
Sorry, I meant the pic...but even a running Bayliner would be 1up for me...Scattered the Alpha, and backup is a 30yo jet with 80s interior.
Cool, you don't have to watch your fuckin' mouth
The main reason I asked this question here is pretty simple. RDP has a diverse group, a large socioeconomic background. There are people old enough to be my parents, as well as those young enough to be my kids. There are those here who could write one check to cover everything I own, and those just starting out. Not too many places like that I have found in life. People that grew up differently, be it era or financial means, may see things different. Sometimes hearing other's opinions may open your eyes to other points of view. I read up a few posts about not trying to change the world, but worrying about your own home. I agree. I do my best to do right by my kids, but the long game is tough. Playing it by ear. My two older ones(14 and 12) have "not so" smart phones. Old, cheap, but some ability. They are checked randomly, and charged on the kitchen counter. No social media for either. Am I too strict on my "Urban Amish" theory? Time will tell. Yes, I'm giving my daughter a truck next week for her birthday. It's a 30yo Chevy, needs paint and interior. She'll help me sand if she wants it shiny. If she keeps her 4.0 in her classes, I'll cover insurance. She's in second semester calculus at the community college as a sophomore in high school, I think it's a fair trade.
So now you can cuss freely again!!! Shit! Fuck! Dammit!!!I have no idea but my kids are not going to be that. My brother's now X fiance who is 34 yrs old and really a full blown millennial moved out here to get married and completely fell apart recently. I got her a job that covered all but 80$ a month for healthcare that was a really good plan and she lost her shit multiple times over the price etc. She went skiing with my daughters and started to cry and throw a fit in the parking lot, my 15 year old daughter was shaking her head and than announced "we have a princess on our hands". I could give you several examples but it was incredible to watch the breakdown. My brother called it off and when I told my daughter she said she isn't tough enough.
Some things are a bit odd with kids. I think I talked with T&Y about this: You couldn't have been a saint your whole life, and have a chance at raising kids. You have to know both sides of the fence. As far as the quality time, pretty easy with the three kids. We have hiking close, and they like the forest. Big stuff will always be river stuff, and oddly anything with monster trucks...I tried, but all three kids prefer trucks to drag racing The three kids are very different in terms of punishment. We have taken books from "Nerd Girl", so far most effective. Boys have received punishments ranging from raking the horse arena, to filling multiple 5g buckets with rocks from the yard (10ac, rocks hurt the mower). Learned early on, they outgrew spanking quick...my hand couldn't handle it.Mr Monkey,
Most of threads on this forum, you and I agree...
When it comes to raising your family, I agree with your mentality.. There is no such thing as a perfect mom or dad. There is always a fine balance of what you need to do for your kids, and what may be overboard. Every kid is different and have to be raised different to get them to be the best they can be... there is not one strategy for all kids.
My advice,
Reward them when they are doing good, Reward might just be a hug, and high 5 stating you love the fact they are succeeding.. or it could be 30 year old truck... make a habit of rewarding them...
When they are close to messing up, or have messed up... I have had luck with just explaining where life will take them if they make poor decision.s. Do they want to flip burgers the rest of their life, or have a better life and buy a boat some day.. type of conversations. But not kids respond to discussions, some need a bit more persuading... WHen the rest of there life is at stake, then do you need to do, to get them on the right track. Because no one knows your kids better than you.
Lastly, spend as much quality time as you can with them. Every family defines Quality differently.. make sure its Quality time in the kids eyes... What am I saying.. let say you daughter hates going to professional base ball games, but thats your definition of Quality time... well you might want to find something that interests her... Fortunately for me, my daughter loved riding dirtbikes in the desert... yeah me...
Dont ever be afraid to question yourself about the way you need to respond to situation involving your kids... Think about.. .do your best to take the time, and pre plan the conversation, before you have it. That will most likely prevent any tempers from flaring...
Thats my advice, nat that you need it or asked for it.... BTW... great job on kids so far... you obviously have there best interests in mind... That what they will eventually see.
So now you can cuss freely again!!! Shit! Fuck! Dammit!!!

Wow, you're such a man's man. Congratulations.
...and you're such a pussy.
Guess the thread title struck to close to home.
I am what I eat. On the other hand you sir are a dick.
It is a thread about pussy, just sayin'Do either of you two think that this adds anything to the conversation in any thread?
You can either get with the times or be left behind...
Interesting thread topic and one I find myself pondering all the time.. I too use the term "pussification" of America, but if we dig deeper that's really not what it is.. It isn't that these people are pussies (although a lot are by the old definition). Some of these people are incredibly passionate about their beliefs, about their hobbies, and would just assume die than give one up, or listen to a different point of view? I'm talking everything from Politics to video games here..
It's something grossly wrong with how they are wired. At the end of the day logic is still logic and things are either going to add up or they won't. Many of these people clearly support / believe things that quite simply CAN NOT add up? It goes against common sense, the way of the world, basic math, etc.. Yet they will have an absolute melt down if you try to even have a rationale discussion with them about any of it?
You can see various examples all over the place of this where they are often "eating their own" now, because one may not have completely submitted to the brain washing and will so much as ask a question. That person is a traitor, a racist, you name it.. Anything rather than have the conversation.
What we are experiencing isn't the "pussification" of America ladies and gentlemen. What we are seeing is something entirely different. We are seeing different thought patterns being developed. An actual different "wiring" of how the brain works and processes emotion and thoughts and logic. When forced to reconcile with reality it is easier for it to go on tilt and shut down (protect itself) then it is to reprogram itself to try and cope.
You have to ask where did this come from, and how did it happen? If you are asking me it is 100% Electronics.
When I say Electronics most of you just thought of your phone, tablet etc.. That's the "new" problem. I'm sayin this whole thing started back when Television was introduced.
There has been studies done on Rats not that long ago.. They had rats multitasking and solving mazes. One set of rats was shown a simulation of a TV screen with the flashing lights, changing colors etc.. The other was the control group (normal). The ones that watched TV consistently took up to 4 times longer to solve the maze.. You ready for the scary part? The damage to their brain was PERMANENT. They were never able to recover and catch up to the control group.

You are the ones that should be having kids though. To avoid repeating what has already been said numerous times already, I agree with many of the common themes suggested in this thread. I find it very sad that society has gotten to this point and I really don't see it getting any better in the future. This remains one of the reasons why I am still glad we chose not to have kids.

Why? Because I have varying point of view? Sounds awful close minded...refer to Dave's post #65Dave put Grads in time out......
At breakfast this morning, my youngest (2nd grade) starts talking about a girl in her class that has Facebook, Snapchat, another social media app (I can't recall the name) on her phone. Really? Why would a 2nd grader possibly need these apps? We told our kids, you won't get a smartphone cell phone until high school...maybe. If a flip phone is still around, they'll get that style. Will it hold, I have no idea, but that's my thinking at this point. I think you're fine. I mean, do these social media apps really enrich a person's life. IMO, no.
Or marry up.You can either get with the times or be left behind...

You were talking about the Right correct?

Without getting too philosophical, there does seem to be an evolutionary change within the American brain. Common sense is not common. The simplest tasks have been forgotten. Kids, and some parents, don't know how to change a flat. This, yet a parent will hand their four year old a 700$ phone for them to play videos or games...the four year old can navigate the phone. In a way, I can see Grads statement as true...keep up with the times (also the one where he may or may not have been hitting on me, but I digress...) I remember the mid-90s, my Mom telling me that computers were the only path to the future for someone my age. My defiant response, "Who will build the houses for the computer dorks?" Kind of weird as I face my laptop at this moment. That led to many things. My computer dork brother has sent me videos of a 3D printer adapted for concrete, building from computer generated plans. Still, a mechanic was needed. Skills are being lost daily. When computers can design, fix and build autonomously, will we be sliding towards the "Matrix"? I think our brains have in effect been rotted by tech. Our tactile feelings are replaced by our visual and emotional? We see videos posted of people blowing up for the dumbest reasons. If you're a man, dressed as a woman...good chance I may by accident say sir. I may not mean to offend you, but I damn sure won't apologize if you try yelling. I think people want to be offended so they get some form of excitement from an otherwise boring life. Is it lack of motivation, looking for a quick fix? I'd choose adrenaline anytime over drugs, but different levels? Different stimuli?Interesting thread topic and one I find myself pondering all the time.. Yes, kids are a shit-ton of work. Yes, my ass would have a "Baller Deck Boat", a new truck, another race car...yes, I'd be doing okay. That said, I wouldn't change a damn thing. I hope my kids both do well in this world, and well for it. Too many other people have kids and don't care. I was the kid that my parents thought would not be suited to fatherhood. Jury's still out, but so far so good. My kids know what we have is ours, and no one else's. They know that you work for your needs, and more for your wants. That's the best I can show them, like my parents did for me. My kids have never asked me or my wife why we don't have the deck boat like their uncle's. They know where we have lived, and currently live, and the life we have. Priorities...I'll end up finding a "Baller" boat, just takes timeUs too!
They require more effort and money than we were/are willing to spend. And we are proud to acknowledge our lack of effort regarding having kids and have been rewarded well for our honesty too.
This is why I have such a hard time finding a guy to date! Most of the available guys in SoCal are more concerned about their image and their social media perception. No more “men.” In my social group, all the women know how to change a tire and be handy. They married guys that seriously can’t hang a shelf or say, “I will have to shower again if I help you in the yard.” It’s just ridiculous to me and I can’t seem to just let it go and date those type of guys. When we go up to the mountains, it is usually me and my best friend Nichole in the cold snow putting on the chains. The guys just want to stay in and pay a guy $40 bucks. But, that isn’t how our dads raised either of us. They taught us how to get shit done and not always pay for it. I blame social media for sure. The perception of what you are suppose to be doing “online” makes people feel invalid or that you are in a competition to compete with a friend’s picture.

Haha that made me laugh! I’ll actually remember that if I ever need a fire!I have a story for you....So 2 weekends ago my brother and I took his than fiance and her best friend snowmobiling. It was a really cold day etc and once we got up on top of the mountain I offered to build them a fire while we went and ride, they said yes please but I could tell they didn't think I could since there was 5 feet of snow. So I said no problem I am going to drive over there and get it started ( big dead tree )...So 15 min later they come down and I have this fire built nice, keep in mind they are from Tennessee. The one gal is blown away I did it making all these comments about am I a boy scout? You would come in so handy if we were stuck, never met a guy that could do this on and on and on. After 10 min of this she than asks me " how did you even start this fire"?
I said " I dipped a tampon into my gas tank" hahahahahahaha

This thread is overflowing from all the Machismo.
Does your cup runneth over......like your mouth runneth over with semen? Lol...This thread is overflowing with Machismo.
No one has brought it up yet and I think it plays a huge role. Broken homes. divorce, both parents working, single parent etc....
Damn I thought i went through them all to make sure. I will have to go back and read it.Dude, you missed my thread... was mostly about kids raised by single moms.
Yup basically spot on to what i was thinking.I agree with alot of what you guys have posted on this subject.. differ with a few comments.
I will ad one key thing..
How many young men are raised by single mothers.....???? With no father or male influence in there lives.
When those young men grow up, they are given a pass, pass along the traits of growing up with out a dad...
The last 40 years of this, has spread a mentality that has weakened the publics perception of mens "opinions". If you look at most things in politics, news, marketing, its all about women, and womens needs.... women oppression... women rights... (I believe there is alot of progress to be made on those items)... Buts mens needs, opinions are no longer have the "Value" they once had.
There are some amazing single moms out there. But they still only have a female perspective, whats missing is the male perspective...
There are alot of happily married men on this board, how many of them say that their wife agrees with every notion in there head... none... because men are men, women are women, both look at the same situation different. Thats a good thing... But men are the whipping boy to the public at the moment. Especially with the Hollywood sex scandals. Trust me, my wife tells me every day, that I just dont get it,, and alot of times I dont... I have learned alot from her, and very happy to have her in my life. My kids are prime examples of kids that grew up with in a loving Mom, Dad, 2 Kids family... Both are on path to exceed my expections.
Young fathers have to step up, be a dad... not just at the beginning,,, then entire 18-22 years...
When you have a few generations of that, you might see a change...
But thats my opinion.
Although I was taught to fix things, rebuild engines, weld and most of the other "manly" shit, I will never understand why some in America think that if a person can not do such "manly" things, but instead can do integration by parts, program in machine code and calculate bond duration with a pencil and paper they are a pussy?
As long as they remain responsible for themselves and others they bring into this world and can pay their own bills, I have no problem or derision for anyone who can not fix their own car, weld or do other "manly" things.

I don't think it has anything to do with being manly. What good would it be to teach your kid how to write code or program a CNC if that's not the field he is going into.
My wife has never wated to be a mechanic but she is better with tools than most millennials.
Teaching a child to use there hands doesn't mean they have to be a grease monkey or rebuild engines. It does teach them to not be worthless when there car breaks down at night in the middle of the dessert or how to bandage an issue at there house until the pro's arrive.
The key to life is being well diversified.
I like that outlook. I'm middle age, but always trying to learn. I am currently reading a book called, "Theory of Wing Sections"...a research archive from 1949. Not to build planes, though that would be cool. More so for the strengths and stresses related to wind speed, or liquids, on structures formed. I do know how to do most, "Manly" things, but not all were learned from my father. I learned to weld from another guys dad, how to use an English wheel from another, and a power hammer from yet another. I really think some people are better suited to working with their hands. They aren't any less intelligent than a programmer or business analyst, just wired different. The key to life is being well diversified.
This should spark some debate.......
There are Hunter's and Gather's...... There are Liberal's and Conservative's, Any Correlation? LOL
