So let me start by saying I feel like I’m well behind the ball on owning a 21’ Schiada. Maybe not but I’m interested to see at what age you guys first owned a Schiada 21/22?

I still haven’t finished my 10’ but hoping to get in done this year. I’d like to get a 21 or 22 at some point but don’t know if buying one that’s ready to go or find a decent one and redo it. Reason why is I’d like to do it in the color scheme, motor, and interior how I want it. I know for a fact I’m not gonna find exactly what I want even though I see some beautiful Schiadas for sale. I’d hate to spend a ton on someone’s blood sweat and tears to redo it all. So I’ve been bouncing the idea of picking up a hull when I get the chance to and build it all up how I want too? Anyone have input or stories to share?

I was 21 when I got mine, 30 years and dozens of boats later... I still have it.

Question #1: You're never too old

Question #2: A more complicated question.

Based on my experience I would say buy the absolutely best boat you can find, that is as close to the "spec" you want to end up at. It's important to define the spec early in the process. Do you want a 60-70 mph cruiser or a 100+ mph rocket? The rigging on the two are dramatically different and if you don't buy a late model boat or an older one that has been re-rigged to modern standards to go 100mph safely you will spend a truck load of money to get there.

Here's a rough budget based on my recent experience (mines not close to done yet) and discussions with the folks that do this kind of work:

Full re-gel coat inside and out -$20-35k, actual varies based on how much repair work needs to be done to address rot, de-lam, stress cracks and how much time it takes to blueprint the bottom of an old hull.

Interior - $10k assuming all new wood structures. Extras would includes a custom hatch at $2-3k, electric adjustable seats, etc.

Engine - $40-80k depending on how fast you want to go and who builds it. Possible to spend more at a shop in Pasadena, but the wait is long.

Trans and v-drive - I spent $2k to have my T400 gone through by Art Carr. A new billet Casale is $3000

Rigging - Plan on $10-12k at Bergeron for a strut, turn fin, rudder, prop shaft, prop, shaft log, rudder box, cav plate hardware, etc. The labor to re-rig a boat is in the 100's of hours. Shops I have talked to range from $85-130 an hour. It wouldn't be hard to spend $20k on rigging labor.

So, using the numbers above the range to re-do a Schiada is $107k-165k not including the cost of the boat itself or a new triple axle trailer. It's not hard to see why new ones are north of $200k.

The gold standard for re-done Schiadas, in my opinion, is the @SFV2RVR yellow on white RC. It had everything noted above done by some of the best shops around. It sold for $90k last year. This is a good as it gets.

At the other end of the spectrum is my heap. It seemed like a decent boat when I bought it...

Thank you so much. I really appreciate that! I spent 3 years going through the boat and had a blast re building it the way that I wanted from scratch. I’d love to do another one some day and 1 up this one.

Thanks for all the info! That’s also one bitchin boat! I’d more than likely try and find a hull that has been re rigged for power. I’m not trying to break 100+ but I’d like to be in the 70s. More than likely a lot of the work would be done by family and friends so I wouldn’t be paying too dollar but would be getting high quality work. I’d highly enjoy being able to build my boat rather than buy something done. I’m a very simple guy it wouldn’t be your typical head turner triple axle. I’d like to get a little fancy but nothing I’ve the top. I think one of the main reasons I’m leaning toward building my own is just being able to sit back in the future and think of all the blood sweat and tears that went into it.

I was 27, I watched on boat trader for 2 years and every few month's or so it would drop down a grand or so. Finally it got to a point where I had to have it and I could also afford it. I live in Texas, Dad and I flew out to LA to look at it. The guy had it sitting in the driveway all waxed, polished etc. We looked it over got in the car and Dad said if that boat runs half as good as it looks pay that man and lets go home. We went to elsinore and went for a ride. I left the guy a 1,000 dollar check and said I'd be back in 3 weeks, if I wasn't feel free to cash the check. 3 weeks later I hauled it back home. Love it ever since.

We bought this rotted out pile about 12 years ago. Took about about 7-8 years to get it done. I am 39 now. If I could do it over, I would find one as close to what I wanted and make it mine with subtle changes. You’ll save tons of money and time, and you’ll get to enjoy it.

Bought my first Schiada at age 24. Mines a 20RT, originally when I purchased the boat from Paul it had a Merc 280. Fun great motor. This winter I decided I wanted a motor with a little better fuel economy and had Joe at Hot Laps repower the boat with a Merc 250 proxs with a DBR kit. Love to have a 21RC years down the road. I don’t think I could ever sell this one... but than again everything’s for sale right? Haha.

My BIL wanted a 24 or a 21 laid up, and offered real money. Like 75 plus for a 24. Gel coated, on a trailer. That’s it. Schiada declined. Frankly, I agree with lees strategy on this. They’re in high demand with a tiny group of people.

As in will not sell bare hulls to anyone. You’d have to find an old one and have it redone if you’re looking To build your own.

Got it, thanks. I'm already doing the second part. There have been many times on this journey that I have said I should just buy a new hull...

I was 40 when I purchased this 1970 22 v drive DC and it has been a great and fun family boat for sure! Still a work in progress and will probably never be the beauty Queen that most of this forum seems to have, but she looks great for original gel and powerplant. I couldn't ask for a smoother riding cruise missile. 😁
