Wife said Zach News posted last night a bird went down at the Landing. Hope @Tommy Gun Images is good, only guy I know in one frequently. Sounded like two people, both OK....

Yeah ^^^^, he came through Steamboat as well. Looks like it could be the same helo. I'm at the Landing and our little group has no info yet.

That's not a crash, it's a successful off airport emergency landing. As 530 said, it appears the helo had lost power, and the pilot performed an autorotation. That's like the gliding equivalent of an airplane engine out.

The pilot did a good job of getting it down safely.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Any landing after which the aircraft is reusable is an excellent landing.

still looks like a crash to me!!!!!! I’m guessing his insurance company will think so as well. 😂

In that pic above, where's the port side landing gear?

I think the crash landing had something to do with its disappearance.
Since wild speculation isn't a thing here, I won't suggest that maybe the missing gear is a culprit as opposed to a victim.

Insurance on the aircraft covers damage and complete loss, just like car insurance.

Off airport emergency landings are considered to be successful if the pilot and passengers are unharmed or suffer only minor injuries. The condition of the aircraft is immaterial.

I hate helicopters and I’ve never even been in one......seems to me that there’s a hell of a lot of weight being depended on those skinny ass blades.

Look at the large amount of dirt that was displaced by the skids when the helicopter touched down with lateral movement. That collapsed the skid and resulted in the rollover. But for that, the helicopter would have been undamaged.

The image of the crash site looks very similar to the crash scene from another helicopter accident that occurred about a dozen years ago just 3-4 miles from French Valley Airport in Temecula. One of my all-time favorite pilots who I used on dozens of boat photo shoots was giving a lesson to a student in an R-22. They were performing an auto-rotate landing when things went very wrong. The copter missed its intended landing spot by a few feet and flipped over on its side -- it came to rest on the pilot killing him, but the student was relatively unharmed.

This is an example of how quick it happens in real life, especially for those who like to fly less than 500 AGL.

Yep I was always taught “you see what’s thru the chin bubble? That’s where you’re going to land during an auto”

Ok, for us non-flying kind of people, I'll ask a stupid question.
Is "auto rotation" basically disengaging the rotor assembly, and letting it freewheel for drag/resistance on the fall? Like putting your foot in on the clutch and coasting?

Flying in helicopters I've reserved for medical purposes only. Been in one, that's enough for me.

Yes, great analogy. 👍

With the proviso that you need to manage that stored energy, in your example the cars velocity and in a helicopter both velocity and height, in a manner that makes the ending most favorable to you and the passengers.

Relax, it is not like Aluminum has a fatigue life......

I have been on jets. Since I don’t like heights to much I tend to look at the wing and wonder if the guy who did all the riveting had a fight with his wife that morning. That’s what crosses my mind at 35000 feet. 😁
