Kind of a long shot, but I've been looking for a nice motor for my 66 bug. Something with 100-150hp naturally aspirated. I figure one of you might have something sitting in the garage. Currenrly has a mild 1776 with dual Dellartos, but I need more power!

Wish you luck. Been looking for almost a year for a decent deal for my ‘59.

They pop up but seem to be too far away, or sell too quickly. One option is to buy an older sandrail with a decent motor, but then you have to deal with selling the rail

That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do. Too funny.

Good Luck, quality bug motors that last are expensive these days. Might be better off building up what you have if it is a good engine case.

That's a really nice ride. With a VW that you want 100-150, reliable, NA HP out of, you really need to start with a fresh long block build from a reputable builder unless you know the person you're buying from, or you need to buy the parts and build the motor yourself. There are still lots of places where you can buy them and then piece together the rest, but it's not cheap.

What area are you in? Don at Foreign Unlimited in Long Beach 562 428 0106, is one of the most renowned engine builders around. Been doing 'em since the 70's. He knows what works, doesn't, works with your budget. Chris, the owner, is an old V-dub racer. My friend Mark Kessenich is a hard core VW guy, has a beautifully restored 66. He had Foreign Unlimited build his motor, took a year because Mark sourced everything original from Germany starting with the internals to sheet metal shrouds.

Thank you for all the replies. This car is a nice driver, but not perfect. It's been sitting in storage for 20yrs so I'm currently making it road worthy and doing small updates. I'll make some calls this week to local shops and see what my options are with my current motor, or a new build.

Id be interested. Can you let me know when he's pulling it out, and what he wants for it.

Thanks Ian
