Getting ready to redo my back yard and going to put a new bbq island inn. Planning on I doing an L shaped 14x12. What are the must haves in a bbq island? Obviously a big bbq and sink. What else are you doing?

I built a U-shaped one.. I did a drawer under the BBQ, a set of doors on each side of the for access and storage, sink, fridge and built in ice chest(ran pvc to the yard drain). I also ran Philips hue lights under the granite for down lighting. Pictures are from last year when I was finishing up the lights.

Our island has sink, garbage disposal, small fridge, ice maker and power outlets on both sides.
BBQ island has the gas BBQ, waste basket. Storage underneath and power outlets on top and behind BBQ for the rotisseri.
‘Don’t forget the fireplace, we use it all the time. Oh, and TVs and sound system, and...

We are breaking ground on ours this week. Loosely based on the below designs, we like the idea of the pass through seating for efficiency of space. We have a 39" cabinet/drawer combo going below the grill, a pullout trashcan, and a drop in cooler going in. Ours will also have a pergola going in that will terminate in the island on the front 2 corners.

Make sure you watch the sun when placing your appliances. We have an ice maker and frig that get the afternoon direct sun and have to replace them every couple years. Never thought of it when we designed it.

big bbq, big sink, usb / outlets, fan above, lighting, speakers, large overhang, large gas line to bbq, LED lighting under overhang. I did most myself so save a ton of money.
What I also did was I found the BBQ and drawers etc I wanted then went to the manuf. website and found all the dealers near me. Then got on each website and wrote down the email contacts then sent one email to all of them and listed exactly what I wanted a quote on and said I was paying cash so give me your lowest price. They all could see the other retailers. Worked like a charm. BBQ Galore in Corona came back 100’s less than they advertise and also delivered it. No sales tax either. It was a fun build. Bought chairs before I built it so I could make sure the arm would slide under the overhang I stucco’d the underneath side of overhang and installed remote LED’s

Great looking islands! Everyone hit the points. I wish I would have added outlets to mine. When I poured the slab I was not planning on building a bbq island. I have a plan to get power over there. It’s going to be a pain in the ass..

Here is mine.... I also have a covered patio with a fridge, drop in cooler and a sink...

Something not thought of would be a microwave cubbie hole under the counter, can be a small one cheapie / Costco one

I've also looked at a interior SS 4 burner gas cook top

we make a lot of our own BBQ sauce and it’s nice to do it outside.

some if you folks have really nice set ups!

Beer Tap, side burner (s) (I use mine on the occasion I pan fry fish.... keeps the fishy smell out of the house - shut up) drawers, sink, electrical, under counter lighting, overhead lights on a dimmer. speakers for the TV and stereo (I am not a guru on bluetooth / app based music.) Fridge

Someone mentioned a small microwave... I wouldn't , but it was a good thought.

BEST ADVICE I saw - know where the sunshine hits - keep fridge/TAP out of the direct intense sun exposure... another one was buy the chairs you want to make sure the counter height works for you and others.

Enjoy

I put a dishwasher in mine. Kinda a pain in the ass getting hot water and a drain to it, but I’m glad I did it. We have a second set of plates that stay in the outside dishwasher. When we have a party, those dishes are used, then put in the dishwasher and it’s started when we go to bed. The next time we have a get together, there’s clean dishes to use. After a big party, there’s two dishwashers to clean up the big mess. The one in the house and the one outside.

I am going to eventually rip out my gas grill and replace it with a cooktop once I save the money up for it. They make cooktop griddles that will drop in the same hole as the grill. Never use the
Gas grill and would use that cook top a ton for every meal.

My 40" lion has a griddle insert, remove the grills and drop in. I also built a secondary drip pan under it with a drain valve so I can catch all that grease without it dripping all over my concrete.

One of the best options I installed on mine was the touch-less faucet for the sink coupled to a mixing valve set at 104 degrees. It's so convenient when your hands are soaked with raw meat juices/spices to just go over to it and rinse your hands without having to touch anything. Have a touch-less soap and paper-towel dispenser as well.

Some pretty fancy stuff! I could eat well for 5-6 years for what some of these cost.

In North OC. Gets full sun 70% of the time in summer months. Have had it for 5 years now with no issues. We use the same faucets at work for hand wash stations and they get used a shit load daily as we run 24/7. Shit ain't cheap though as they are from the $300-600 range. Mac Faucet, both below are the same company out of Paramount, CA.

Hey Icky, That’s looks great. You said Phillips Hue lights? Do you model or more info? Are they multi colored? How do you control them?

Here's the ones I bought, there's cheaper ways to do it, but this was way easier to me and supposedly can connect to my Logitech universal remote(haven't tried yet). You'll need the hub or starter kit for the first one to connect to your wifi, after that it runs off the app. Just FYI, on my linksys mesh system I had to plug their hub into the parent node. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/philips-hue-outdoor-lightstrip-ble-5m-white/6432207.p?skuId=6432207

Get a big enough sink. I went with the basic little stainless bar sink and I wish I had gone with a bigger one.

where are you installing all These goodies? LA, San Diego, Havasu.... I have a under counter ice maker in my garage, it can produces 50 lbs ice daily, although during summer in havasu water is so hot it takes forever to bring the water temp down to freeze the ice. I had to install a Pre chiller to cool the water before the ice maker. You will need a good drain line as the ice maker dumps excess water and a water filter system to make good tasting ice.

my pre chiller I used a free standing refrigerated drinking fountain, I got off a job! Works great! Smart and Final sells 10lb ice bags and twist ties, so you can bag your own ice, I have 90lbs of ice in my freezer for boating or off roading.

If it’s in Havasu or a hot climate you need this, A fridge and an ice machine that’ll make close to 200 pounds in 24 hours in reality and Havasu it’ll make about 100 pounds in 24 hours.

If not your drinks will never stay cold in a party situation. I turn this bad boy on starts starts putting out ice the next morning it has 70 to 100 pounds made. I put the ice in these two roller ice chests, and by the afternoon I have 120 to 150 pounds made in the ice chest full of beer, soda and all the necessary drinks.

i’ve had parties of 60 people and all we have to do is backfill these roller ice chests out of the refrigerator.

If you want to shop you could really save money I still get high-end products. I like eBay this is a American made Elkay sink that retails for $650 it was a one off left over at some construction site I think I picked it up for $80. The Fossett is by Newport brass it’s solid bronze and stainless steel it’s never gonna rust last a lifetime it retails at $625 picked it up on eBay for $105. I did the same thing with the ice-OMatic that was a leftover over, 220 pound a day ice machine it puts out half cubes which is just perfect for drinks. The ice bin holds about 80 pounds.

The refrigerator is pretty much the finest made they actually cool label for other brands, but it’s Uline, American made. The countertop is granite but it’s from a special part of Brazil finished in Italy. part of it is translucent it’s off the hook, no issues in the last 2 1/2 years.

mahi-mahi tonight!

Hate to burst your bubble but I literally just bought that exact same sink at Lowe's on Friday for my backyard island, it was $109. Just in case you ever need to replace it. And cheers, you did get it $29 +tax cheaper than I did.

I've heard negative opinions on putting the smoker in the island because of the smoke it creates. I am doing my backyard now and the island is small so smoker won't fit anyway. I'm putting it on my side yard. Not too much of a hassle because as they say, "if you lookin' you and cookin'"

Also, shameless plug here. I'm in SoCal and we do stone tops. With Covid slowing commercial work I am taking on residential stone and cabinet jobs. But these BBQ islands are slam dunk and I'll give you the best deal I can. PM me dimensions and I'll work you up a price. SoCal only. Doesn't make sense to go to Havasu.

I wouldn't put a smoker as a built in. I move mine around depending on the wind/temperature.
