Similar deal buying my wife’s car. Got the price and trade-in done and then they added in ceramic coating and some other BS. I told them no chance and walked. They didn’t attempt to stop us. Didn’t call back. There’s no supply out there.

I am dealing with Dutton Dave/Dutton GMC right now on a lease end purchase and could not ask for better! They have been excellent to work with and I am planning on a cpo Escalade purchase with them very soon.
Give them a try, Steve Neville the used car manager has gone out of his way to be helpful.

If your Son can afford to wait till the right truck comes along, that seems to always work out best for me. (especially right now).
My last 3 tuck purchases were at a time when I wasn't even actually 'shopping' for one, just sort of had it in the back of my mind.
I know . . . easier said than done.
My current truck sort of just fell in my lap . . . I had been looking for a specific truck/year/model but couldn't find one.
My neighbor had the EXACT TRUCK but swore he'd never sell it.
Then one day out of no where, he calls and said he had just ordered a really big boat, and needs a much larger truck . . . I walked over to his house and bought it.
So Yeah, if your Son can hold-off a bit, he'll be more in the drivers seat, and that's usually a good thing.
Good Luck.
Exactly- DO NOT DO A PASSION BUY- falling in love with a vehicle/boat etc just knocks all defenses down, and you are screwed. Easier said than done but patience is the best negotiating tool.
Exactly, I told him don't settle, get what you want, because as soon as you do you'll find exactly what you were looking for for less than what you paid. He has a buyer for his truck that's going to pay him his asking price (way high), that's why he wants something now. I told him if he has to, tell the guy that wants his truck that things fell through on the truck he was going to buy and he can't sell his truck now, but he let him know when it's up for sale again - and go with that.

I only wish we could buy direct from the factory and cut out the dealerships altogether. If its good enough to roll off the factory floor with everything I asked for on it, then I don't mind doing my own wash/detail when I get it. Hell, a plane flight to Texas to go to the factory is cheaper than any dealer markups.

Looking for used. Go online Carmax, price posted is not negotiable. Prices are good, get the extended warranty, they honor it with ease at other repair shops. Had good results myself, plus they currently have a great inventory of used.

I was born and raised in Tustin and still work half a mile to the Tustin Auto center. I can tell you without exception every dealership in there is horrible. I have purchased a ton of new vehicles in my lifetime and not a one has been from that shit show.....They are all sub par

This was on a used truck. We agreed on the asking price, he was pissed that we didn’t want the extended warranty, the paint protection, wheel and tire warranty, or the service contract.

These are always the best. Last car I bought for my wife, guy comes in to try to sell us all this shit after I already told them I wasn't interested.

I stopped him in the middle of the few words he spoke and said, if I have to listen to this, we are not purchasing the car, your call. He shut up and walked out, wife wrote a check and out the door we went.

DCH Toyota tried the same BS. Window etching, theft tracker, clear bra door protection. 6k in total. Salesman would not remove but the Finance guy did and got 2.9 down from 6.9 they tried. BULLSHIT games.

I hope it was a new half ton for 38k. I paid 37and change for my last one.

Your first mistake was agreeing to pay MSRP! They knew you would pay any price as long as the payment met the budget. The problem with kids these days is they only care about payment cost. You and your kid need to take some Dave Ramsey courses. Setting your kid up to be burdened with 6 years of payments isn’t right. Teach him the value of cash. If your not willing to pay that amount in cash why in the F would you borrow money plus interest then? The dealer isn’t your problem!!

This is true, what to you want your payment to be, than they work the terms (years) to fall into that category.

Bought a new 2 door jeep in 2016 - I was living in NC, but made the purchase from a dealer in IN. They ran my credit over the phone, wouldn't take a deposit (which I thought was cool) and went to a dealer in Chicago to pick up the Jeep.

Took me about 3 weeks to make the trip to Indiana to get it, sit down with the GM, and he starts talking about all the different financing options, blah blah blah. I just asked which one had the lowest interest rate and he said 36 months. Well then, I want 36 months. Don't you want to know what the different payments would be? Nope, I just want the least amount of interest. He looked at me like I was crazy.

Same crap when I bought my 2010 and 2015 Superduty - What kind of payment rage do you want to be in? You let me worry about that, I just want price and rates from you. Payment doesn't matter - That's how they trap people. If they know what you are willing to pay a month, they are going to price it according, with longer terms because they know it fits your budget. FKN crooks.

Now when I bought my 2017 450 I didn't hear any of those questions.

Side note, I see some RV talk in here. I have no idea how they discount on stuff from that aspect, but my FIL just bought a 2021 Fuzion Toy Hauler direct from the MFG and got 55k off MSRP. Is that normal, or do I need to have him do my leg work when I decide to buy one?

My son found a truck at Tustin GMC that checked all his boxes, so I went with him to make are he didn’t F’d over. They wouldn’t dicker on the price, so I figured at $38k plus another $4k in taxes and we’re at $42k. He brings the paperwork back and the payment seem high for 72 months (I don’t know why he did 72 months), and I look and don’t see an out the door price, but I do see an item that says “add-ons” $3080. What is add-ons? He says it’s a GPS. I tell him the truck has navigation and OnStar, I don’t want it. He tells me its already installed in the truck. I tell him I didn’t agree for it to be installed and I’m already paying the asking price, I’m not paying for it. He says that he’ll check with the sales manager - I’ve never seen a sales guy return this fast, he say he won’t take it off. I tell him I’m not paying for it, so he gathers all the paperwork and says okay. He didn’t even try to work with me.
This seems pretty unscrupulous to force the customers to pay an additional cost for something they don’t want even though the cost is not shown until the actual numbers are crunched. How many people don’t question the cost and pay for it anyway without knowing it? I’m filing a complaint with the state for dishonest business practices.

Call @DuttonDave at+1 (951) 259-4404

Great price, no bullshit, abd hell they will deliver it to your house if you want.

Hatfield is also a good dealership
I worked there as a tech for about 11 years. It was a great place to work, and I was proud of the way the sales department treated customers. None of the BS snake oil ad ons. Crazy part is, several salesmen that were there before I started were still there when and left and for years after. Pretty unheard of in that business.

Walking away was the right thing, sorry you had a bad experience. There are a few of us on the boards that are or were in the dealership game, and sadly everyone's unpleasant stories we have heard a million times over. However, it does not mean all dealers are out to screw you. Dutton Dave, although I don't know him personally, seems to have a solid reputation, for Chevy, I go see Jason Holley, I have a few guys for Ford, etc, etc. I worked for Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC dealers in my days, and it sucks to be presumed to be a thief and have to prove otherwise, but hey, that's the biz. The best advice I have is to work with someone that you have been referred to and see what they can do for you. You might be surprised. You have contacted Dutton Dave, give him a shot and see if he has what you want, or can get it in 👍

It is crazy right now. I have been in Fixed Operations for 22 years, and believe me when I tell you, 95% of car dealers had a record month for their store in March. Very unprofessional, but's that why they are being such assholes.

What's the issue? I worked for BMW for over nine years.
We're dealing the an issue with a BMW CPO right now that is maddening.. I 100% regret just not buying my wife a new one. I won't ever do it again.
Not sure where you are located, I’m at Palm Springs BMW right now getting service. My advisor is Sandy Monson, she is so sharp and nice, maybe she could help?

Not true we do not do that !!!

Did I say you specifically? I made a general statement because yes, this type of thing seems like the norm with dealerships these days. Don't get made at me because car dealerships and care salesman have somewhat of a bad reputation in general.

There are good, bad and all degrees of in between, just like customers and all people.

My dad’s been a used car dealer for about 60 years, super honest old school. A few of his best friends were Ford and Chevy new car dealers, they too were great guys, unfortunately now passed on.
It’s harder now, the world has unfortunately changed and you kind of have to weed them out. Listen to recommendations and warnings, keep your eyes open and stay focused. When you find a good one, support them and let others know.

Sounds like they went to the school of sales put on by Huntington Beach Jeep. I swear they tried this on me for a used car even had a brochure about each feature they installed on it. "Of Course we could remove it, there is a charge for it...about the same as the cost to keep it on"... My response was "thanks for wasting our time today".
I think it the same owners !!!

I’ve had dealings with both Dutton and Tustin. First dealing with Dutton, looking for a new pick-up knew exactly what I wanted, built it on line many times. Saw it in an on line ad at Dutton, called them said I was coming down to look at it. Told them it would take me an hour plus to get there. Show up and the salesman that I talked to was busy, so I’m walking around the lot can’t find the truck, I’m getting more pissed every minute thinking am going to get, Hey that truck is gone, but let me show you this one! Another salesman came out and said they asked him to help me. I asked about the truck on the ad, he said oh we put it in the back when you said you were coming to look at it! Drove it, write it up.
Tustin, wife and I are looking for a used Cadillac SRX to replace the one that was totaled. The salesman is someone we have bought cars from at another dealership, actually long time friend. Looked and drove the car we wanted, OK, let’s talk price, I tell him what I wanted to pay, he comes back after the trip to talk to manager, he came down $200.00 from their full asking. SEE YA!

What I really would love to know is what the conversation is that happens between the slimy sales dude and the even slimier manager.

Or is there no conversation, they just watch like 10 to 15 minutes of their favorite porno fisting scenes, then makes something up and walk back to the customer?

I have a friend at BMWNA that is trying to assist. We’ve got an attorney involved at this point so best not to say too much.

this was my 6th and LAST bmw that I will ever own. Once this is done we will sell it and probably buy a Yukon or Tahoe. It will be a new one

Last car I negotiated over the phone, we reached a price agreement over the phone and I said I’ll be there in 20 minutes. Oh sir, we close in 90 minutes. I told them we’ll be done before then, or you’ll never see me again. Absolutely no BS, drove away in before they shut the store down.

Findlay in Las Vegas was a 20 min in and out experience. Negotiations were done over the phone with the sales guy when they got what we wanted, he had all docs prepped, picked me up from Ceasars, I signed docs, handed him a check..and he took me back to the casino. In and out in 20 minutes. It was the best car deal ever... If you are an LLC buyer they have their process down pat on it.

That is exactly what happens! Haven't you ever seen Fargo? :p

REAL car salesmen work by referral only. They only accept appointments, and will actually help you get what you want.

If you walk on to a dealership lot, and you don't know anyone there, you'll probably end up with some salesman that's been working there less than a year. Those guys walking the lot, they move around a LOT. And they don't give a crap about you. They are looking to make a paycheck, based on what's in your wallet.

The guy that's been there 30 years, is back in his office, helping his OWN customers, and not dealing with the general public.

There is a LOT that goes on at a car dealership that you guys that aren't in the business, know absolutely nothing about. Just like any business out there. It's all about who you know.

Here is the other problem going on now...

WAY back in the day, car salesmen got a percentage of what markup they held in the car. Everyone made good money. Customers got good discounts. Life was good on both ends of the deal. Today, there is no more percentage. Salesmen get a flat fee for every car they sell. The commission days are over at most dealerships. So now days, life sucks on both ends of the deal. :(

Ages ago, when I was trying to save up money for a down payment on my house, I worked seven days a week at a Lincoln Mercury/Saab dealership. Weekdays fixing cars, weekends selling cars. On a Saab, there was 10k minimum mark up on everyone of those cars silly cars. I sold a bunch of Saab's in the first few weekends, cause I knew the cars inside and out! The other salesmen hated me, cause they figured I was taking money out of their pockets!! Good time for about six months!!! 😂

Same here with Findlay.

We negotiated a good price over the net and a phone call to make sure they were lined up for our arrival.

The car was ready when we arrived but saw one we liked better. Just unloaded from the car carrier.

No sweat they simply gave us an even better deal on it and we drove off.

here is another tactic my GF got screwed on by AUTO NATION/BMW....keep in mind this was on a new car, Auto nation owning the BMW dealership.

found a new car she wanted. decent price, even very favorable financing at 1%.

during closing the offered for $1500 an extended service contract (oil changes and so forth) which she did by.

now keep in mind the car comes with BMW service for 3 years36k miles...pretty much standard on all new BMW's.

so at about 45k miles she takes in it for maintenance and is presented a bill. she informs them of her extended maintenance contract........there answer "that's for 3 years 36k miles".

that how AUTO NATION FUCKS people.

Leased a Hyundai for our techs to drive. Walked onto the lot and the salesman knew everything about Hyundai, every car, every model, what the packages included. I had never met an auto salesman that knew more than I did about a car that I was looking at. Surprised the hell out of me.
Really good cars.

The dealers job is to separate you from your money.

When the F&I guy gets home from work, he pours a Scotch, and relives his day. Thinking about how he conned the old lady into purchasing the Full Protection Plan, which included etching the the car's VIN on its windows with a small sandblaster, the special undercoating with its lifetime warranty, the application of the state of the art ceramic clear coat, and the ne plus ultra, the 10 year, 150,000 mile service warranty, he laughs.

First it's a giggle, and then...

Supply and demand. They can sell if what ever they desire, as long as it is disclosed on the sales contract. If it not on paper, it does not exist. They chip shortage is helping things, Ford just cancelled the Summer shutdown at most plants.

WASHINGTON -- General Motors will cancel some truck production shifts this weekend at two U.S. auto plants because of the ongoing semiconductor shortage, the company said on Friday.

The largest U.S. automaker is canceling scheduled overtime production for Saturday at its Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana and canceling a Friday night shift as well as overtime shifts for Saturday and Sunday at its Flint assembly plant in Michigan.

GM said it plans to operate all but one of its plants during two traditional summer shutdown weeks to boost production.

Here’s the deal man, even though the $3000 is not disclosed in the original price and then shown on the paperwork, as a mystery item that they can’t explain what it is and it can’t be removed - that’s just F’n unscrupulous.

I’ve been trying to use the 2nd party warranty for a tire i had to replace in February, the same month i bought the truck. Still to this date, Tustin GMC has not paid the warranty company their fees so i can’t get reimbursement. No return calls, no nothing

What a dinosauric relic business model.
Peeps are still dicking around with Car Dealerships with the same shit as 70 years ago.
The absurdity of actually going into a car dealership ... where ”BS” is more prevalent than “Fake News”.
Hate the business.
Hate the entire experience.
Please go away.
Im not an electric car fan just yet ... but I like how Tesla sells their cars ... you can take it or leave it.

We picked up the truck this afternoon, granted it was a couple grand more, it has less miles, is like-new super clean, has more goodies, and its a certified Pre-Owned unit also. This was a win/win deal.

A big two thumbs up for Dutton Dave! 👍👍

It’s definitely ripe for disruption.
It’s just been hard for new business models to take hold.

Saturn was first out of the gate with no-haggle pricing, but the rest of the dealer experience was unchanged.

Carmax has been pretty successful at changing things up. We’ll see how things change moving forward.

The problem is, there’s big money involved. And no one can afford the risk to commit to an entirely new business model.

Selling at Tesla volume is one thing.

But carmakers aren’t equipped to handle 50k pickup truck sales per week, or 17 million sales per year, let alone servicing all of those cars, and moving trade-in inventory...those cars go to auction, dealers buy them, and we’re back to where we started.

It’s a bazillion-dollar idea if someone can figure it out.

So you feel the perfect car purchase experience is done online or with a phone app ? Do buyers only get to view cars at Auto Shows, or like Tesla, at one Mall location in the entire county ?
I enjoy the hell out of the vehicle purchasing experience, I find it enlightening and entertaining. I like test driving various models, checking out the comfort, features and ergonomics.
Buying a car strictly offline for me would be akin to ordering an email Russian Bride.
I've never so much as touched a Tesla, because they've made it to difficult and for me, inconvenient. I don't like their marketing plan, I'm not going to that mall environment to view a car, so I'll probably never own one for that reason.

These guys all know that when customers have a choice they'll never walk into a dealership again....

In this model, where do you envision potential buyers actually getting to touch, feel and test drive ? At some mall, like Tesla ? No thanks, that feels to me like an auto show where I'm dealing with some family's spoiled brat crawling over and standing on the center console. I enjoy spending time just kicking around a car lot and find the buying experience fun, well, right up to that F & I guy anyway. 😖
