Thinking about buying this guy from the neighbor. He’s asking 15500. Any thoughts or advice? Pretty close to pulling the trigger

Looks like a well built rig, retail on new units is much higher. I like the Aluminum vs wood build, the 5" insulation and enclosed tub. I DON'T like the bathroom location, like them between the living room and master so you have privacy from the living area and at night you dont have to walk through the living room area if you have company.

Looks nice. I would consider a slide. Some models of this size slide the dinette out. World of difference when it comes to room inside.

WAY too small for you guys. You would only use it a couple times then want to upgrade. Guarantee. Too tight inside and no place for the boys to lay down without removing seating for others.

Well we bought it. I will definitely agree that it’s small, but i wanted something I could pull with the suburban or 1500. I went in with my brother, so not too bad money wise. If we end up liking it we can always get something bigger. This will be my first experience with a trailer so I didn’t want to go too big till I get the program dialed in. I also still need to get a bigger truck eventually so there’s that too.

For the size of your family that’s close quarters.

Do trust your truck to tow it? Might be getting the cart before the horse literally.

I think the suburban will pull it with no problems. I’d probably borrow my dads truck over using mine

You could probably turn it now for 20k. Rv's are crazy right now. You should see the garbage they are trying to unload. Nice buy!👍

I love how everyone says this is too small and then goes on the day the best memories of their childhood were in a camper in the back of their parents truck, or some 10 foot pop up camper.

I’m sure you’ll figure out how to make it work, and it beats the alternative of not camping at all.

Does anyone know anything about electrical? This is the panel I have in my shop. Would it be possible to get a 50amp plug out on the shop? I was going to pm @hallett21 but I don’t know how to pm pictures. My neighbor was supposed to come look and dial in power for my volt I’ve just been super busy.

You shouldn't need 50 for that. I have had a few that size and usually just used the adapter into a 20 amp 110 outlet.

@BHC Vic

You likely need something like this, 30Amp to 15 amp adapter, and a good quality thick gauge extension cord. Check what plug is on the trailer for the exact adapter you need. If 30 amp for the trailer, the below should work.

Camco (55165) Heavy Duty RV Dogbone Electrical Adapter with Innovative 180 Degree Bend Design and Easy PowerGrip Handle - 15 Amp Male to 30 Amp Female, 12" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BUU5Y...abc_T5MMZ6ER83QWCK7V77DG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Perfect, he’s giving my the charge cord I just need to see which adapter he’s using. Maybe he’ll give me that too. I’m going to get it Thursday. He wanted cash and it’s a little harder to get cash than it should be right now. I gave him a deposit and I’ll drive out wed night and drive it back to norco Thursday. He said if I get a generator get something bigger than 2500w. I guess that’s the next thing.

We take 5-6 people out in our 24' toyhauler all the time with the dirtbikes. Its cozy and the guys leave all their gear outside, but you are only in it for short periods. Biggest problem with small trailers and family is the small holding tanks.
Everyone has to conserve water to make it work for more than a couple days.

You will all have a great time. Our first trailer as a kid was a 17’ single axle and there were four of us. We went on dozens of desert and coastal trips and a handful of western state road trips.

If I do plan on towing with the suburban should I do anything to the suspension? What about a Silverado 1500?

Suburban have auto level in the rear? If so it will be fine, just drive carefully. If not a set of Air lift bags in the springs will help add some stability. With the half ton, maybe a set of airbags, but try it first, it might be fine.

Get a good weight distribution hitch with built in sway control. Take your time setting it up. If you had a 3/4 ton you wouldn't need it, so I've heard.

He’s giving us an ez tow hitch. I think thats what that is? I asked him what size ball I needed and he said no you just need a 2” receiver. I’m giving you the ez tow hitch so your truck doesn’t sag. I felt kind of dumb so I stopped asking questions. I probably should have just asked.

That is a weight distributing hitch. You should be good. Set that up and see where you are at. Some sort of air level or air bag will add some extra stability if you think you need it.

The dry weight is listed at 4600 lbs on that trailer. let’s say you add 1400 lbs to it with water and all your crap. You are going to be fine with either vehicle, a WD hitch and possibly air bags. Again just drive carefully.

Vic, when you get that WD hitch make sure you YouTube the hell out of it so you understand how they work!! It's not rocket science but knowing exactly how to do it is a good thing.

It looks like a really nice and solid rig to cut your teeth on and figure out what you guys do and dont like and such. If it doesn't work out for you, sounds like it could be a good trailer for your brother (I think I recall he doesnt have as large a family?).

The kids will enjoy the hell out of it no matter what. Whenever I say anything to my parents about the 5 of us in our little 10.5 foot Dolphin camper back in the day my parents always roll their eyes cause it was so much work for them. Setting up, breaking down beds every evening and morning, making sure all the sleeping bags/pillows were stashed away properly so people can move, etc. Then heaven forbid the weather got shitty..... I may remember the difficulties for my parents a little more cause I was older when we upgraded to our first toy hauler, but I don't want to deal with the stuff my parents did, and I have 1 more kid than they had.

"Some" on this site will say Vic needs a semi to pull that rig! :)

My first time towing to Echo was a similar size TT we had for years. Towed it with my Mom's Astro van with the 4.3. It weighed just under 5k loaded without water. We towed that thing as far as Iowa with it. A 1/2 ton or Burban should handle it with ease with a weight distribution hitch.

Congrats on the trailer. Sorry just saw this.

Sounds like your rig can work on a 20amp circuit. When you’re ready I can let you know how much that panel can serve. Just need to take a look at the inside.

What year is your sub? Im assuming the 5.3 right? The 5.3's have a pretty low tow rating really.

Wrong. The Towing Police have recently changed their guidance and best practice recommendations. A locomotive is now needed to tow a travel trailer of any size safely.

Hey, is "locomotive" RDP code for an F150? I understand that's the standard truck against which all others are compared 😁

I think it’s rated for 7200 but I’m not 100% I’d have to look

Been going back and forth on this. I have a 2014 1500 Sierra and my tow rating is 9800. Ideally, we all want way more towing capacity than needed, but you’d be fine in the Suburban. This is your entry into camping to see if you like it. I’d bet most of your trips will be within 2 hours, maybe 3 of home. Use a weight distribution hitch, drive cautiously and it’ll be okay.

1500 is more than plenty. A good load distribution hitch and you are fine.

Puts weight on front tires the end...

lol

in all seriousness shit is simple as fuck.
My buddy spent all weekend setting up his hitch and 2 trips to the scales.

I put hooked up my trailer and measured how much it sagged with no bars.
Adjusted hitch until I cut that sag in half.

towed perfect lol.

you can do the same take it for a spin if it sways not enough if it don’t your fine.

don’t put much weight behind rear axles of the trailer.

I’m sure someone will be along shortly to tell me I’m wrong and you have to measure front fender height and scale this and scale that and 10% this and 15% blah motha fucking blah.

meanwhile my shit tows straight as fuck and I didn’t spend all the time dicking around.

It depends on your rear end ratio. A 3.42 rear end has a 8-8,300lb rating (4 or 2 wheel drive) where as a 3.08 has a 6-6,300lb rating. You will also need a trailer brake controller as well.
