For the most part the bottom of the lake is pretty much a desert. There is a lot of nothing in most places. Again if anyone wants to join that would be ideal. I’ve dove alone in Powell recovering stuff in 40 feet. Found what I was looking for in 30 seconds. Like I said. It’s a desert down there. Lots of nothing.

Yes I have all certs except for dive master. Counting kicks, using a compass and grid pattern is the best. I also have two lights, one is an HID specific dive light and another is a smaller spot light, all gear is halcyon for those that understand. Basically DIR setup, gear designed around tech dives. Probably around 400 dives under my belt. I used to help my instructor teach classes in La Jolla cove for years. I’m actual more comfortable diving at night, because there is more to see. Day dives in the ocean are pretty boring most of the time.

I think I’d run a spiral pattern off the anchor with a line to focus on the search not the pattern. But hey , that’s just me

Or the beauty of diving Monterey! 95% of my dives are between 48-55 degree waters...

-Sherpa
This!!!

Cut my teeth diving north coast. 48-52 is the norm. Hundreds of dives in this. Its entertaining to talk to people who are bragging about 500 + dives but they are normal tropical type stuff. Then you realize they are not actually very good divers. You do North Coast for a while and you go tropical, you accidently realize you are a better diver than the "dive master" on the boat........

Something magical about the kelp forests and vibrant live in the rough cold waters. Most of the people I dive with are fairly rough and tumble for diving. As to temperature, I have gone over to the dark side. I dive dry. I can dive in a slushy and be just fine with some minor planning. Friends have done exactly that in Alaska, its on the list.

I would actually recommend not having something tied to you such as a float. There are lots of ways that can go wrong and only a few that it would be mildly helpful. An official search and rescue crew with the area barricaded off and a full team on the surface is a totally different animal when they have lines. There is also significant training involved.
Yea, don't touch the bottom. If you do, just hope there is enough current and start on the downstream side working upstream.

Good luck.

Diving / sweeping ships is never boring in my book.
Castaic lake is one of the best ass kickers for crap stirred up/ seeing stuff after I’ve come across

Tag out/lock out:
The four most important words I listen for when working
This video gives me chills everytime.

I’m at 119 dives, all work/sweeps/ training/render safe
Open/adv./rescue/nitrox/dry suit
Two coruses away from Underwater Bomb Tech cert.
Takes a lot of trust being on a sweep tether line. I only dive alone as a rescue diver called in.
I’m lucky to have both a SEAL Team 6 and a Navy UDT on my team, makes for
Great wealth of knowledge and discipline.

They still recover a lot of bodies out of there? When I went through EMT 9-10 years ago. A guy in my class was an LA County LG and said they’d go fish out cartel bodies? Any truth to that?

Not sure on cartel bodies but drownings via accident or suicide happen.
We do under water post blast training there. Trying to find evidence in that lake bottom is beyond challenging.
We get drug OD’s and lobster divers (solo) that run out of air and end up under docks in the Port of LA .

He made it out like they were dumping bodies vs drownings (castaic). Clearly maybe a little bit of an exaggeration lol

Anyone up for this? If not I'm gonna have to scrub it until I can get a buddy. Diving alone even on a shallow dive just isn't worth it.

Sounds like some heavy duty equipment.I still have an HID light was bad ass when i got it 20 years ago and i prefered it over the LED lights. Also was nice for lobster dives didnt spook them.

Night dives were always interesting i done more than a few solo dives as well for lobsters. seen some nice halibut and a large white sea bass too.Big halibut were just off the shore about 60 ft in a few ft of water.

I cringe when I think about those stairs 😡 Boomer was my jam when the swell was manageable!

Were you diving La Jolla in the early 2010’s? bet we crossed paths as I logged a metric shit ton of dives there. Used to fill my 80s and the bailout at this little shop by a small golf course close to the shores.

Yep, have a couple hundred dives in the cove and canyon. My instructor was Rob Matthaei. We were in the water with him several times a week for years.

Buddy lost a 9k Paneri about 1,000 yards off body beach a few years back of anyone cares to go find treasure. He tackled me into the water and I grabbed onto him and pulled his watch off on accident. 😬
Just curious, who wears a 9 thousand dollar watch to the river knowing your on/near the water? I get going out to dinner, going to a wedding etc but a day on the water? Damn, If I was Mr Diver, I would make a b-line for that area, could hit pay-dirt!

Just kidding. But seriously, have you looked around Havasu recently? 10k watch while out on the boat isn't out of the norm.

I didn’t not enjoy that film. Curious though if this puppet fish is smoking a cig?

Never got anybody to join me. I didn't feel like doing a solo dive. Hoping to find someone soon to join me.
When are you out again? It’s been about five years since i submerged last, need to get a hydro and fill on both tanks but could be fun for a weekday if you’re around.

Crickey!! Was he wearing Gucci sandals too?🙂
For $9k you'd think it would have a better clasp than a Walmart knockoff 😉😊
.
I haven't worn a watch in 20 yrs or more. We got cell phones for that...and besides, the lake is where we're supposed to forget about time.

I'm coming out tonight through monday afternoon, although the same here I also realized I need a hydro on both my tanks. They have about 2000 psi in them. The rest of my gear is good. If you're around in 2 weeks that could work. Early morning. It would be just as easy to rent a couple tanks from the place in town

LOL, it had one of those rubbery sport bands on it as I recall. But there's some serious watches on the boats around havasu. Exibit A) Bubba wearing a 10k Breitling with diamond bezel and Steve wearing a 15k two tone Sub while boating (and changing props). I however, take my watch off and put it with my wallet, knife, phone, in a dry box when on the boat ever since the Panari went to the bottom of the lake. ;)

Lol, I was more of a $30 SwatchWatch kinda guy. 😄 A few of which were great conversation starters. Never was into the blingy, expensive 8lb wrist weight. I assume it's the same addiction some women have with purses and/or shoes.😊😇

Its pretty amazing how fast that water and muck destroys glasses and other items

My son dove for an RDP member’s prescription glasses awhile back. They were only down a couple weeks and the glass was already etched beyond use.

Is this the CC that hit the other boat a few months back?

I like ABC watches on the water. Pretty sure you can use the Casio ProTrek band as a link for your anchor rode 😆

Had a fellow LEO years ago (actually, MANY years ago) had a "fanny pack" (yes you youngsters, there really were fanny packs) with is gun, wallet, badge/ID, wedding ring, watch a wad of cash, his car keys and some prescription meds and you guessed it, somewhere in front of the Casinos in Laughlin, on the river, not sure what happened but ... "Blip" there it went over board. Sunk like a rock. who knows where down river it finally got stuck on the bottom. I was NOT there but I heard about it ALL DAY LONG when he was back on patrol several days later, I bet he's still chawing about it 20+years later

x2 I wear a Rolex Sub everyday. Whether I’m at work, river on a stand up jet ski or riding my dirt bike in Baja I never take it off. That’s when I’ll lose it. It’s just a watch. There’s more out there.

On behalf of us "po' folk", also known as "jet bote" owners...
Fuck me! I had to look up what that was. Never even heard of such a thing. Others here may not admit it, but I'm sure I couldn't be the only one?

Havasu and the river...only places I've been where guys with million dollar boats can hang with owners of a couple thousand dollar float, share a beer and a beach.

Gotta love it!

yeah sorry. I’m a watch guy, figured people know watches but actually most don’t. 😁🤷🏻‍♂️

And I agree. Havasu is good like that. Everyone’s there to have fun doesn’t usually matter what you’re running if you’re cool. 😎

Yup! Just like my old friend / my mechanic before he retired. He'd be in his underpowered shit brown sea swirl and every trip to the channel cove or sandbar. He would be asked the same question...
"why are you driving that piece of shit?" more or less. His response was epic every time. "I spent a thousand bucks to sit here and drink beers and you spent over a hundred thousand bucks. But we are both doing the same thing." he's one of the greatest dudes I've ever known.

Due to the nature of my hobbies and "work", watches are a no-go. Hell, after losing a finger, my wedding band is on a stainless chain around my neck...a chain measured so as not to choke me, and also not short out on batteries or get caught up on something.
I looked up some of those watches. At least it was only a 9k version! Saw some in the 20 and up range!

Whole different world from me...I just came in from moving chicken coops!

You see some on Antiques Roadshow. Some guy will have a old one he paid a hundred or so way back when and they are worth $75k! Certain ones and if they have the original receipt, paperwork and box they get primo prices.
