My lovely wife wanted “Smash Burgers” on the weekend...

Not being one to ever leave her disappointed (!!!!) I got to work.

Out came the plasma and a chunk of scrap 5/15 steel that was laying around.

First cuts were a 24” diameter circle with a 13.75 diameter hole. These are the grid diameters of and XL and Mini Max Big Green Egg respectively.

The 13.75 diameter circle went up on the mill.

Just eyeballed a grid pattern on half the circle.

Welded up some quick spacers and started seasoning.

The results exceeded all expectations!!! Really fun to cook on and the flavors just pop.

Arteflame makes them commercially.

There are a few design improvements that could be made if a person was really wanting to make inserts. The most notable would be the insert support. Would weld a full ring underneath to make it impossible for the center grid to drop through (Think manhole cover). Different center inserts, half grid, full grid, Korean BBQ style dome, wok ring, etc, etc would be where the fun is at. Optimizing material yield would make or break the design. Risers from the off cut segments and/or shaped into grid lifters as a start. The support ring would be inefficient to cut unless paired with another set of size inserts. (Or cut them in 1/4s out of the corners and weld them on that way). Maybe I will fire up a 20 year old seat of Pro/E and send you some files...
