The better half is wanting to grill at our sandbar/floating/anchor here since she is sick of the cold sandwich thing out of the cooler ever day. Looking for recommendations on gas grills since the charcoal thing doesn't work with my OCD regarding cleanliness on the boat. Size and space on the boat is of course at a premium and would like to hear all of your thoughts on what works best for you...

I think she expects me to beat Bobby Flay when we have guests on the boat? I'm not against firing something up on the sandbar itself, but not real crazy about anything burning on the boat...

@jefftows has a portable blackstone. Not sure how it works out, you might want to ask him about it.

I have a magna in the shed i had on a past pontoon, it was so awesome the two times i used it, then realized it was in the boat for three years and used twice so took out and well, it sits in the shed. I even bought the 2# propane jug etc was a lot to haul around not to be used.

It's definitely one of the dumbest ideas I've seen.

Pros and cons to them all, but mine gets used most trips did a tri tip last time. I take a wet towel and set it on the interior down wind to keep grease or juice spatters from sticking

We bring one of those disposable Mr. BBQ’s you get @ Lowe’s for around $8 bucks. Comes with match light coals so you just need a match. When we’re done we just drown it with water and seal it in a trash bag and throw it away when we get the boat back on the trailer. They work awesome and best part your not carrying around a greasy grill and propane all the time. 😁

Our redneck sandbars usually have 3 designated grills left there for anyone to use. Somebody bolted them to a pair of skis and put a ski rope handle on the end so you can drag em over the sand wherever you want them. But before that it was a small grill in a trash bag and a small bag of match light charcoal

$20 dollar walmart propane camping grill. Damn thing has lasted 4 years and counting. I just rub the removable parts in the wet sand to clean it after use, then dunk the whole thing in the lake and shake it, drain it and let it dry for a little bit.

Find a good quality plastic tote to put it in for transporting. I notched the plastic tote to fit the handles, it does not need a lid and the bbq fits tightly in the tote. The tote catches any crap that may fall out of the BBQ, but after the cleaning process, it really is not a mess at all, and there is just enough grease spread around the inside of the BBQ that thing never rusts.

I think I have $30 into the whole setup. Some cheap BBQ tools and a lighter slide right in the plastic tote behind the BBQ.

I think I'm going to give this a try. I like the idea of putting it in a trash bag and being done with it.

This looks kinda interesting though?

Coleman fold n go. We keep one of these on the boat. Its as small as you can get (approx. 12x12) but gets the job done surprisingly well. We usually put it on shore or on a small folding table. Keep in a its carrying case and it fits about anywhere.

I still have this in the shed outside. It worked pretty well. Propane model.

Other option is fried chicken, wrapped in foil and set it on the engine, keeps it nice and warm!

Had this exact one on my Carrera 238 back in the day, mounted it on the swim platform so i didnt have to worry about the grease, worked great and was the only performance boat on those lakes with a grill during the party cove seasons lol

I grill most of the time we go out usually for 6-10 people so 240 sq inches is the minimum

I started with this but 12K BTU wasn't enough, if you put anything on it before it was totally hot or if you covered the grill it would never get hot enough
so I replaced the single tube burner with a "U" burner and it is much better

Mounted with this on the rear transom, grill site out past rear swim step, I sit on the hatch with my feet on the step and toss food for beer!

and this

1621269312399.png

Doing it over I would use the same mounting just a slightly larger grill with 16-20K BTU,

It does take up some realestate, but as OP said my wife does not like the cold sandwich deal. Even if I just re heat some tri tip wrapped in foil

Father in law has a west marine unit on his boat. It attaches to the pontoon back rail and is removable and stores easy.

Have made everything from hot dogs to filet and shrimp while going down the river. Its actually a pretty cool add to the whole program.

instead of sammies you can mix it up! Some ideas-

taco salad - bag salad, Fritos or corn chips and some homemade toppings - taco meat /grd turkey cheese & salsa easy to whip up on the boat
wraps - grd turkey and taco fixings, asian chicken, teriyaki chicken and wrap in your choice pita, tortilla, leaf lettuce
cold ribs from leftover are always good
fried chicken with Mac salad
grd turkey / beef sliders
meatloaf sammies/ slider/ wrap
chicken /egg / tuna salad over a bag of shreds / salad mix with crackers

although a hot dog, burger, brat while on the water is really good and easy to whip up

I have this one and it is small (maybe 14" round and 6" thick) and fits easily under a seat. It's great for a smaller group and doing dogs or brats...we don't cook anything too greasy. Once it cools down, I take it apart and wipe it clean with paper towels. Very easy, functional, and cheap grill. I have probably used it 30x over 5+ seasons and is still going but showing its age. Still not bad for a cheap grill.

The thought of a bbq and all its accessories on the boat makes me cringe. 🤔😬

I was thinking about doing something kinda similar on my 200,000 “bitch boat.” Except I was thinking about putting the dual coolers on the back and mounting the table mount to the top of one of the coolers.

I am concerned about splatter on my floor though.

In the past we've cooked hot dogs or sausages, wrap them in foil and put them in a separate insulated small cooler like a six pack by igloo. They stay warm for a few hours.

Buy a BBQ mat, cut it to the size you need and roll it out when you cook. Roll it up when you are done.

I would throw down wet towels. It was messy. I would not do one again that was not outside of the boat or at least over the rail so it drips into the water.

I also stored ours in a bag when not in use.

Here's ours. Bought it from an inmate on here. Works like a champ and the pic shows where it lives when not in use. Nothing beats dogs on the water. IMG_2831.JPG IMG_2832.JPG

I appreciate all the input and ideas! I am going to do my best this year to see what works the best for us. Boat time is really the only time I get to sit back with a drink in my hand and just chill and it seems like this whole grilling thing comes across as more shit I have to worry about.

I guess if it makes the wife unit happy and keeps my belly full/balls empty it just might be worth the hassle...
