Well thankfully we are at the END of a crazy 4 day adventure, and I have to admit it was a little unnerving.....I sold my wife's car a few weeks ago and have been looking to get her a new one. I find what she wants and it is up in Carson City, we say what the heck we will take a week off and stay in Tahoe and kill 2 birds with one stone, so we get to Carson City to pick up her car on Friday late afternoon and the smoke from the Caldor fire is just amazing, looked like we were in the middle of a snow storm. We get her car get up to Tahoe and the entire hotel at stateline that we always stay at has smoke floating around the entire hotel, nothing they can do about it either. So I keep telling her that I have a bad feeling if this fire gets to a certain area we have to get the heck out of there, my gut is rarely wrong and she agrees. Crazy thing is that we just saw that special on the Paradise fire and how waiting ended up in almost epic disaster for all the residents and I said I will never be put in that position if I can at all avoid it. Anyway, we are supposed to be there for about 10 days and last night only 3 nights into the trip I just cannot enjoy the trip and my gut is bugging the hell out of me, I told her we have to get the hell out of here ASAP, and she agrees...we pack it all up at 10pm but were exhausted and I was not going to risk driving that tired so we tried to get some sleep til daylight, got up first thing and left Tahoe, during the night I kept getting up and seeing nothing but packed cars and trucks with what ever belongings people could pack up and were flying out of the area, police and fire department flying towards the fire with sirens blaring, and I almost woke her up and said we have to leave NOW!, anyway we get out of there, get back to Vegas 9 hours later and during that time our friends that run the Casino/Hotel told us thank GOD we left when we did because just a very short time later the streets were jam packed and traffic was not moving as more evacs where called for, thousands of cars just stuck for hours (I pictured Paradise fire scene where everyone was stuck in their cars and were going to be victims of the fire). So after getting home, I check the news and our area got evac warnings and notices just a short time ago...I hope and pray all our friends near the fire get out safely and that if it has to happen that only property is destroyed and GOD spares life. That was our exciting and seriously stressful weekend...

Juan Browne Is an excellent choice if you want to hear the truth about fire from a man who has the background to know what it is.
He is one of the most squared away men I have ever met.
Another good source, if you ignore the horse manure in their editorial slant, is Yubanet.com. If I was out of the area and worried about friends/family in the northern Sierra due to fire/flood etc. I would check Yuba Net.
I have family who have lived and worked in South Lake for 20 plus years, and they got out this morning in the evac deal.
A couple of young men from my circle of friends are on strike teams down there as well. We now have had two documented fires that have crested the Sierra and, at a minimum, have spotted out out on the other side of the crest.
This hasn't happened in California in the past.
One of the issues facing Tahoe now is the piss poor planning done by the TRPA over the past 30 years plus, with their refusal to work logically to thin and clean the forests in their sphere of influence. It wasn't that long ago when they would go after landowners who raked the damn pine needles off of the ground. Drive around the Tahoe Basin, or fly over it, and it doesn't take much to pick out the huge number of dead and standing trees suffering from the Bark Beetle infestation. This infestation has killed huge tracts of timber all over the Sierra and elsewhere.
TRPA and the federal gov and the state govs own this mess.
I helped haul some Beetle killed trees out of that area some 25 years ago, and the red tape required to do so ultimately led to legal action. It has not got any better unfortunately. The people who tried to run our log trucks off of the road and flipped us the bird as we were hauling west out of Tahoe have brought up their children to believe the same horseshit they bought in to, and those people now vote, and go to meetings, and "influence" the next generation.
Until we get a handle on these issues, or the rains return and until sanity again prevails in the water management and storage programs of this state this isn't going to get better.

We have been packed up with the 5th wheel hooked up ready to go for a month.
If you live in wildfire country, you should be ready, from now til Thanksgiving if the rain doesn't come. Get the things you want to take with you loaded up and ready, or ready to load. Take lots of pictures of all of your personal belongings that you can't take, and put the pics on a thumb drive and store it elsewhere...like in a safety deposit box.
The pictures will help you remember what you had and document them for your insurance agent should the worst happen. As an example, I have 2 large roll cabinets full of tools, a lift, multiple welders, a benchtop mill, etc...I have pics of all of them. Don't wait for the evac order to leave if you know you are a sitting duck. Keep your vehicles full of fuel...people were running out of gas on 50 today. Have a plan to meet someplace safe, get all your family members on board.
And speaking of insurance, if you haven't looked at your policy in 5 years look at it. Reconstruction costs have skyrocketed. Is your personal property coverage enough? Will your coverage make you whole if you come home to the worst???

When we combine the fire danger with the mismanagement of the electrical grid in this area we have 6 months a year (or more) where we live in a constant state of readiness to evacuate, and/or wait for the power to go out again in another one of pf PG&E's CYA power outages. I confronted a senior management person of that company about a month ago and after listening to her talking points about their situation in public presentation.
I then told her that it is becoming rather obvious to most thinking folks that the primary cause of the state of the grid is 40 plus years of mismanagement, either intentional or due to extreme gross incompetence at P,G&E. She was sorta taken aback.
She looked st her feet for a few seconds, looked around to see who was listening, and then replied in what amounted to a whisper,
"I can't deny that sir. But I can't confirm it either."
"You don't have to; like I said, it is glaringly obvious to anyone who investigates it."
At that point she smiled her PR person smile and walked away.

This will be our last season here, God willing. The house will be put on the market come spring if my contractor who is doing some fixes for me doesn't buy it. I am getting too damn old, grouchy and generally too fed up to live like this in a state where the insanity ramps up on an almost daily basis.

Hope everybody stays safe.

Where my house was in AZ I know its just a matter of time before the entire neighborhood burns down. Every year there were fires headed towards the community. In 2005 there was a fire that started above the neighborhood and somehow burned around and away into the Tonto Hills Forest. Eventually it burned around 250k acres ;(. It was called the Cave Creek Complex fire I believe.

Here ya go:
Residents remember Cave Creek Complex Fire - YouTube

watched so many fires off my back patio.

wishing everybody the best concerning these fires.

JFYI.

The fire has passed through Echo Summit and now burning into the downhill side of Tahoe Basin. If you're familiar with the area then you how bad this is right now.
Burning Both sides of the 50 and the 89. Great move with the call to evacuate South Shore, its coming through.

That is both my sisters current neighborhood and our childhood home it hit last night and into this morning. She lives on Haidis and we grew up on Skyline Dr. Waiting on official report how many homes were lost. She lives just above the ccc and holiday market buildings. Lots of prayers for all the friends and neighbors. Lots of long time locals.

This site has pretty good analysis and as close to real-time IR overmapping imagery. I found it while watching the Dixie fire close in on my brothers home in Chester (not effected) and my mothers place out near Susanville (also not impacted).

This may be a dumb idea. But if you have to evacuate, why not head north on the Nevada side of the lake to get highway 80. Or over to Carson City then north to Reno and pick up 80 that way? Seems like this would put you out of the traffic and moving away from the fire.

That's where all the traffic is. It is the only way out of South lake. Highway 50 runs north east through town and that is the only way out now. 89 on the west side is closed and so is Luther pass to the south. The traffic back up is on 50 to Kingsbury and on up to Spooner to Carson City.

I was at the Goodguys West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton this weekend and came back Sunday morning over 88. Pretty bad in some spots and in one section came up on a CalFire Command vehicle in the middle of the road and thought they were going to shut down the road and turn us around. Figured I'd badge him and see if he'd let me through but at then he took off. I think he was observing fire activity. About an hour after I got home they shut it down.

If any inmates here are evacuating and need a place to park stuff I have 5 acres available. Could possible house animals too. I'm just south east of Gardnerville. The evacuation center in Gardnerville is now full.

It jumped highway 89. That is not good. Nothing stopping it from reaching South Lake Tahoe.

They reported the winds were heavy last night. They are heavy right now.

It all depends on the amount of wind and direction at this point. I hope they get a break tomorrow

Well said. This state is an asylum and is runned by the inmates. Nothing is going to change. That would require those in charge to own up to the situation and make changes. We both know that is not happening.

My MIL place in Kyburz has been in their family for 70 years and was a structure that is much older than that. It has survived all that time but now was almost destroyed in this fire except for the hard work of the local FD. Sure they have had small fires in the past but those were mostly put under control quickly and not allowed to get out of control. Now it seems the fires get out of control and there is nothing they can do to stop them at that point.

Sorry to see you go. I will try to keep the lights on for you in case you come back to visit.

That is where we headed out right before the jams, now that road has been bumper to bumper since Monday late morning. Took us 20 minutes to get out at 9am took a friend 5 hours around noon to get out and the rest is much worse.

My son and I were fishing in the Kyburz area a few weeks ago. Hard to believe they were able to save the cabins. That area was had many trees and the cabins etc. looked very old. Glad the cabins were spared!

Current Mapping as of several minutes ago. . Fire has intensified the last hour. An Air Force reconnaissance aircraft spent the last hour touring the area and is now heading back towards the Sacramento area. Just JFYI

What are the chances of it actually making it all the way to Lake Tahoe?

Really good if the wind does not cooperate better. They are doing an amazing job fighting the fire to the point of exhaustion but they keep loosing ground slowly, if it gets through a specific area and spreads out wider it is going to be absolute hell fighting the fire. It was like a war zone that is for sure.

I'm still lost at the lack of air support. Someone earlier mentioned visibility.

I still feel like you could fly in retardant drops one at a time to avoid any issues?

Also, I have absolutely no firefighting experience beyond being 1 of the 3 people who stayed in my neighborhood in Yorba Linda around 2008. We lost about 12-15 houses.

IMO, pretty damn good. I hope it does not!
If we back out the map overlays to using only GOES satellite infrared temperature mapping you can see the red boundaries are now bordering within 2-3 KM which is 1-1.5 miles of the Lake. This is the current GOES temperature mapping in the last several minutes or so. Its right there.

I'm sure it's a major safety concern to fly anywhere near this fire. The valley has been smoked filled for days. If they could, they would, imo.

Looking at Flightradar24.com it appears that there are 11 aircraft on the fire right now, a lot of helicopters and two tankers, one a VLAT. There are also 2 converted C-130s loading at Mather, which is where the big tankers go to load up. So, I think air is a big part of the attack.
There are certainly times when weather conditions make them pull off. Flying a tanker into thick smoke at low altitude is generally a bad idea, add in high elevations and higher density altitude issues, fire created wind and such and it isn't a sound decision. The guys flying these machines have balls of steel so large they clang when they walk, I have met several and watched them at close range.
Flightradar is a great way to see exactly what is going on!
Blancorilio channel latest update is another good one, Juan is really a treasure at this point, with this and what he did back in 2017 with the Oroville Dam stuff the guy is a breath of fresh air in honesty, and gives clear concise information when people need it most.
I am in Western Nevada County and the winds have been picking up since about 8am. The wind is out of the west now, southwest "ish" as per the maps Msum661 posted.

I hope @C08H18 and his family are all good. I know he has a place in South Lake Tahoe.
Thanks for asking. We left about two weeks ago when the smoke got really miserable. We also had a 60th BD party in Napa and a few days of wine tasting so we packed up the season and headed down the hill. I had to go back up last Thurs to retrieve the boat and it was a sad ghost town. Most of the boat ramps were closed and Tahoe keys had locked the gate to the ramp per sheriff's orders. Luckily the guys that work the ramp were all stoned and i was able to buy them some beer and get the gate unlocked for a few minutes. We will get a month of boating on the Delta and then head back to AZ. BTW, Hookie Day on Delta is good time if you're up for that tow. First Thurs in Oct.

It looks like they are working the extreme southeast corner with 3 air assets and then back up in the Hwy 50 area east towards Tahoe with the rest.

I definitely know those pilots have 1000x bigger balls than I have. I was just interested in the different factors regarding air support.

Thank you for the explanation sir

Ok good, I'm glad you were able to get out of there.

I am not surprised by the stoned guys at Tahoe Keys Marina haha

I have Hookie Day on my boating bucket list but we'll be at Monster Storm that weekend in Havasu with some friends.

I know they do that for us down here in LA County. Is that a CA thing or up to local jurisdiction?

I think it's situational, fixed wing will not fly at night, but the helicopters do and your right that they do down here. They might up there depends on the department/agency and protocols.

Back in 07 when it started on Piuma went down malibu canyon and turned back up Las Flores. We were living at the top of las Flores off of Schueren rd.

They damn near had it out and then the sun set and they pulled off all air support. I spent all night with my mom watching it come up the canyon. By the time the sun rose I had pumps on and hoses rolled out.

I know it can be extremely dangerous (not asking anyone to kill themselves) but it’s rough when you watch it get roaring again during the night.

I know it can be extremely dangerous (not asking anyone to kill themselves) but it’s rough when you watch it get roaring again during the night.

Known obstacles (powerlines, antennas....) in the area shut it down.

I grew up in South Lake Tahoe. I graduated high school in 1974. I moved out in 1979. That’s when the TRPA started. They wouldn’t let me build a house. They had lottery system BS.. I moved to Truckee. No problem building houses and cutting trees down. We lived right off of Pioneer Trail backed up to the forest. We used to ride more dirt bike back in the 70s right where the fire is burning right now. It’s just behind Montgomery Estates. and high Meadows Road. Looks like it’s burning up high Meadows and heading to heavenly Valley ski area. I now live about 25 miles north of Truckee right now. I have the Dixie fire north West of me not too far away. I’ve had lots of smoke at my house for weeks. The entire forest in California is shut down I heard until September 17 right now. I live on 12 acres out in the forest so I am out playing with my chainsaw every day right now. Cleaning up. Luckily I have logging trucks going by my house every Summer for years. It’s all about forest management. Tahoe has no forest management. There doing a great job trying to save houses in South lake Tahoe right now. We’re having a scary summer.

It's not as much the fire itself as it is the embers from the fire hitting a very dry area.

It’s a shame that we got lied to by your hero so much in regards to Forest Management.

GAVIN NEWSOM: We are stepping up our game. I hear you. I get it. We need to do more and do better. These last two years have been devastating.

CHANG: But an investigation from CapRadio and the California Newsroom collaboration found Newsom has overstated the success of forest management projects, and last year, the governor cut funding for fire prevention. Scott Rodd broke this story for CapRadio and joins us now from Sacramento.

There are lots of very well managed forest lands in the Dixie burn scar (SPI and Collins, 100,000's of acres worth). While forest management is important, these new fires don't respect it like they did in the old days. Hell in the old days burn scars would slow down or stop fires, not any more, the shit is burning so hot and blowing so far the only thing that will stop these fires is rain.

I can only hope that the people that are in the path of these monsters, both fire fighters and home owners, stay safe from harm. The new normal that these fires present demands a significant change in tactics from what we have done in the past. Far more resources need to be dedicated to early interdiction by air and land to stop the fires while they are small. The alternative is what we have now, and had last year, and the year before which is large un-controlled burns that last months, destroy 100's of thousands of acres, are driven by mother nature, and are extinguished when the rains finally come.

Not so sure about that.
My front door camera looks like it’s snowing outside. The amount of debris flying is crazy.
Hopefully no active embers. My home borders National Forrest on 2 sides.
