Flying to Pensacola this Friday with a buddy who just bought a DP Moho. Which route should we take? Driving non stop Cannonball Style to Echo Lodge.

This time of year it’s not all the critical because the weather isn’t bad, winter time the 10 can be bad. 10 has more hills. I like the 40, you don’t have to deal with rice road on the way home and the steaks and bbq places in Texas abs Oklahoma are awesome.

Sorry, I had it backwards, 40 is bad in the winter.

I’ve done the 10, but not the 40. The 10 is easy, boring, flat, and what we do on FEMA deployments for those reasons… straight on through. Lots of truck stops. This is what I’d do if I were going non stop like you are.

I've done both a million times ,it all depends on the weather, I'm thinking right now your better off on thr 40 due to the recent hurricanes, I know last November 2020 I went east on the 40 to North Carolina and returned west on the 10 ,the 10 was a mess all through Louisiana and didn't really get better (due to construction ) until after San Antonio

And then there is New Mexico, sucks on either route. Last time through mostly everything was closed due to rona since much of it is Indian reservation.

I find the semi traffic heavier and more aggressive on the 40 but the 10 can be bad too. I prefer the 10 but it does suck in the cities along the gulf coast, try to hit those off hours (avoid rush hours).

Huh? Once you hit texas the 10 is much better..its 80mph..and cuts WAY down on your time in speed trap NM. The 40 sucks donkey nuts for most of it. From texas to FL I can't help you but I drive the 10 to Havasu from texas and back essentially monthly from the Austin Texas area..I'd choose it every time over the 40. I can give you a stack of great BBQ places to stop as well.... Only real construction issue on the 10 right now is near Lordsburg, NM...DO NOT SPEED...its 65 but thats only maybe 10 miles.

Make sure your tires are good and add some water to the tank to take a dump, have the fridge cold for some drinks snacks…

sounds like a fun time

@echoi have done this drive 4 times. Did the 10 once and the 40 the other 3. The 40 is easier in terms of weather and 10x more scenic. O wouldn't do the 40 unless it was significant times savings

I will be taking the 10. Heading out of here in maybe two weeks. I hope all the hurricane damage is cleared out by then. If not the 40 it is or I just hang here at LuckyStrikes for a bit longer.

correction…I am stopping West of San Antonio for a few weeks in TX as well so of course taking the 10.

I'd take the 40. The 10 has a lot of road construction right now in East Texas and Western Louisiana.

I've driven the 10 from California to Orlando, I would personally take the 40. 10 goes thru some pretty major cities with a lot of traffic, and it is boring as hell from San Antonio to El Paso!

Think it has 150 gal tank, so two stops for fuel! It has the 600 hp motor.
I’ve not been through there since 2015 but I noticed NM had highest priced fuel of any other state I went through except California.
And, on the 40, at 2am, there was only one station opend 24hrs through a long stretch and his prices were higher than Cali.

Just because the coach “can” do it on 2 tanks, I’d try like hell to just not even stop the coach in NM🤷‍♂️

I’ve asl never gone that Far East on 10, is there any significant grades like the pull up to Flag on 40?

I think the two terms "Used Motorhome" and "Non Stop" may be mutually exclusive.

Also the terms "New Motorhome" and "non stop."

It sure seems that shake down runs have lots of issues. Good Luck and be safe. Drowsy driving is dangerous!

No major grades on 10. One tall bridge straight up and straight back down lol. I would check road conditions by state then decide. I refer the 10 as there are some decent rest stops in Mississippi and Louisiana with rv specific parking where you can actually open a slide.

He had it professionally inspected and test driven. It would have cost him $3500 to have someone drive it out so we are rolling the dice!

It is a beautiful rig, for sure. What would someone expect to pay for something like that? Is 45' still prohibited for registration in Cal? Do you need a special license for the tag axle?

Not sure what he actually paid for it. He will be on the road for a year and not living in CA so it def won't be registered in California. No special license is needed that I know of.

45 is legal in California. Ca requires a non commercial class b for over 40 ft or 26000 lbs I believe. Not many people abide by this though.

He should look into mail service in Florida and register there. I think ours is under 200 for two years. Was thousands in Ca per year. My driver license street address is our motorhome plate number.

I've also heard that Montana will accept a PO Box as a permanent address for registration purposes, and offer mail forwarding, so you can register for >$100 a year.

More info on this only for rvs or other stuff too?

Other stuff too, but CHP is acutely aware of this, so if employed in California, make sure you have Cal plates on your POV. Unless retired of course.

Everything we have that is paid for, RV, Boats, cars etc. It usually doesnt work if their is a lender involved because the banks want to know where the asset is and want the actual address where the collateral is located.

It cost me about $1500 to set up about 20 years ago, not sure what they charge now.

This is who we use...........https://www.bennettlawofficepc.com/

It's more than that now..... They added a new fee a few yrs ago....Still save on sales tax though.....

**An $800 – $825 luxury tax is charged by the state on vehicles with an original MSRP at or above $150,000 and RVs with an original MSRP at or above $300,000.

You can get financing, but the rate is going to cost a couple of points higher....

I did on my 5er, my Montana LLC rents it to my work business and I can take the depreciation of the trailer off my Montana LLC business.

Another vote for MT. Now that we own property there we may alter certain things. $49dollar Mt LLC is our go to...they don't have a county tax in Flathead...

OP as far as a recent report...my mom took the 40 from havasu east 2 days ago....she's still not stopped bitching about construction delays and she's a solid 5-7hrs behind were she should be on her road trip. As I said before I can't vouch for east of SA, TX...but I drove I10 around 2 weeks ago from havasu to my house and the only construction was near Lordsburg NM for bridge replacement...its one lane for about 10 miles at 45mph. I do that drive almost monthly.

1863 miles in 28.3 hours. Add about 3 hours for the 3 fuel stops and a quick breakfast at Denny's for breakfast during one of the fuel stops. I have no experience driving a DP, let alone a 45 foot coach.

I am not going to lie... I was a bit intimidated when I was sitting in the passenger seat when my buddy drove the first leg. This coach is huge. But after about 10 mins behind the wheel I started to gain confidence. The coach drives really smooth and had a ton of power.

We took the 40 route and had no issues at all. Leaving FL at 4 pm, we drove straight through. Little to no traffic. Even the few construction zones we went through were not bad.

As for shakedown issues, we only had a stripped out passenger's side window wiper fail. The coach avg about 6.7 mpg. There was a bit of gear oil on the passenger's side tag axel rim. We took the cap off and the level showed full on the hub so maybe it was ovefilled?

My buddy and I would swap driving every 3 to 4 hours while in motion on the highways. I didn't really sleep much but the time flew by. I guess I will always be spoiled driving such a nice coach with the Spartan chassis and a 600 hp Cummings Diesel.

Thanks to all that gave me recommendations!

The spooky part of being in passenger seat for me is not being able to see out of the mirror on that side. I do most of the driving but my partner does drive out on open highway

Was funny passing all the semis when sitting in the passenger's seat. You sit higher than they do and it looks like you can shake hands if the windows were open.
