A derailment would be more mechanical than human in my opinion. Its not like there is a steering wheel that you can yank to the right and say this bitch is coming off the rails. But human induced by lack of maintenance
Ok I realize it is a somewhat regular occurrence I was just curious if it was because cutting corners on maintenance or not hiring and training enough people 🤷🏼 Thank you for the response

No thank you. I pray never to see that, however most all train activities i see are through the windshield
Out of curiosity, i assume engineers are on long routes. Do the engines have sleepers and restrooms since there’s no caboose.

No two of us in the cab, go from A to B stay at hotel then B back to A.
Out of needles we have runs from Needles to Barstow 342 miles round trip, Needles to San Bernardino 480m round trip, Needles to Winslow 585m, Needles to Bakersfield 608m and Needles to LA 612m trip. All go to a hotel to get FRA rested then head back, longest we can legally be on duty is 12 hours per direction.

So who are the bNSF carrying on the 40 in their vans? You have to have restrooms in the main cab?

Maybe you’re the blind one? 🤷‍♂️
Do your enemies want to make you stonger or weaker? Do guns make us stonger or weaker? Do transgenders make us stonger or weaker? Why do they go after the guns verse the mental illness? Head of DHS in mexico streamlining migrants, Canada turning them away, If you cant see it i cant help you. For you have choosen to belive the lie rather than the truth and are given over to the stronge delusion.

A question for those in the know:

Are Train derailments caused by poor maintenance on the trains and railways or human error?
This one, most likely human error. My opinion, the train broke in 2 the conducter went back and closed the angle cock so the train could recover the air. The grade is 2.2 which basically the same as the Cajon Pass. He should have secured the train with hand brakes before trying to recover the air brakes. Once air pressure starts to recover air brakes will release. Engineer jumped at 15mph which is maxiumum speed for this location. Id assume the engineer would have placed it into emergency before jumping. That would be the 2nd time since a full charge and should have worked but apparently it did'nt. Agian this is purely speculation on my part.

I know 70 year old Ray well, i know 45 year old Ray just in passing. Robert is a real good guy, I’ve worked and hung out with him a bit early in my career working out of Bako.

Robert is a good buddy. Known for 20 years almost. Ray is my step brother. Met his dad a few times also.

Trust me I believe a lot of bad shit is happening in the world right now and it’s not hard to see. I was simply making my statement to you thinking the train derailments are all part of it. That I do not believe.

Well, good, did not want read one of you guys had to step off your locomotive Monday @ 15 + MPH..You guys make lite of alotta responsibility you take on everyday out in the middle of no where.
Appreciate the kind thoughts. I'm safely tucked away behind a desk for the last 15 years and it seems road trips are a thing of the past, we keep just enough people around to keep the place running, barely. Last time I was on a locomotive was well before covid.

The calculated energy when that came apart? That’s a huge number.
There were 55 cars and 2 locomotives. A loaded boxcar weighs about 220,000 lbs if I remember the stenciling correctly. A GE C44-9W locomotive, which I'm guessing these were, weighs about 425,000 lbs each.

That's 55 X 220,000 + 2 X 425,000 = 12,950,000 lbs.

Gotta convert that to SI units, which is 5,874,021 kilograms. It was traveling 120 MPH, that converts to 53.645 meters per second.

In physics, momentum (p) equals mass times velocity, p = m X v, or p = kilograms X meters per second.

So we have 5,874,021 kg X 53.645 m/s,

thus p = 315,111,856.545 kg X m/s

This can also be expressed by the kinetic energy formula KE = ½ m X v², the answer of which is in megajoules,

thus 5,874,021 X .5 X 53.645² = 8,452,087.77 Mj

Converting that to a more familiar number, the energy contained in the runaway was around 2.347 gigawatt hours, enough to power about 1.25 million average homes for two hours.

Did I read correctly it split into two sections and some cars remained stopped? If not the numbers are much larger.

At 40,000,000 lbs, the KE was 3.3 times higher, or 7.745 gigawatt hours. That would power 4.125 million homes two hours.

I've no idea where the break was or if it was simply an air hose separation. Could have been all 20k rolling.
