But they have no Soul....

that's a different conversation. Problem is new cars come so good strait from the factory and they give you the options you want from the factory. Plus its so expensive to mod these cars now because everything is computer driven and intertwined that you can't just mod one thing with out it affecting others. So people don't modify the cars much so everyone's look the same as the next guys besides wheels. I think that's where they get there Soul so I do agree with you on that. But in time they will as people can buy them used cheaper and then modify and give them some Soul.

Are you talking stock cars though? Yes you can modify a 60's car to be fast and fun but every stock "muscle" car I have been in was only fun in the "i think i am going to die" when going fast. The brakes and suspension of the 60's are just not up to par with even today's basic muscle cars. Don't get me wrong I love old cars but you just can't compare them to 2020 cars.

I think what you mean to say is that you can’t compare todays 2020 cars to “real” early heavy metal asphalt ripping beasts.

Have you ever grabbed 2nd gear with the rock crusher, wrung out at 7K+, in a tubbed wall to wall rubber 65’ Chevy II, or Chevelle, or a blown 65 split window?
Trust me...it’ll make you a believer.
I’ve had both.
My C7 is an engineering marvel...and it’s really not much compared to the latest offerings.

But there is NOTHING that substitutes the felling of grabbing a gear and seeing nothing but sky as you literally feel chunks of pavement in mortal combat with 32 inches of tire contact right behind you.

60's and 70's cars are cool but you can't compare them to new stuff. Your talking 50 years of advancement. New cars will blow them away, get better mpg, be a lot safer, and be more comfortable doing it.

The new shit is most definitely light years ahead ...

"Lions Drag Strip. How close could the spectators get to the track? Very close. So close in fact that when you went home that night, you were covered with millions of tiny pieces of tire rubber from head to shoes. It was wonderful..."

If you would like, next time you are in Parker I'll drag a friend over and he can tell you about the time he was tasked to put a cammer in a Shelby Cobra.

I forgot to mention that the Cammer was a wooden mock up. He told Phil Remington that he wouldn't install it.

Well said. Anyone can go down and sign their name and drive off in a new muscle car. They change the wheels, add some stripes, window tint, and some carbon fiber to try and stand out from the crowd. It takes dedication, time, and a vision to pull something like this together. Can't wait for my old school blower motor car to be finished, will have a modern suspension, brakes, AC, etc. When I go to a car show, new cars like the Corvette, Mustang, hell cat, etc are all the same to me, you've seen one you seen them all. A car like this grabs my attention and I can spend half an hour or more looking at the details.

I'm always shocked when looking a old muscle cars as to how small they are in comparison to about any model car.

I’m a Camaro guy. Had a 69 that would pull the front tires with a built 350, an 89 RS 305 TBI (lol) and 11 and 13 LS V6/6M cars. I’ve been shopping a 6th gen for a bit now. A NO OPTION 6M LT1 seems about perfect to me, but can’t find one at a dealer. 1LE is another option. If I’m spending ZL1 money I’ll hold out for a C8. But I’m really impressed with the current class of musclecars. Can’t go wrong with any of em.

For those that don't know, the McCulloch supercharger was the forerunner of the Paxton supercharger and was the development of Robert Paxton McCulloch, the same guy that established Lake Havasu City. Paxton Products was latter sold to Andy Granetelli (STP).

.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying this Studebaker Lark. I came across it at a street fair in Jackson, MI when I was in town for the IndyCar race at Michigan International Speedway in 2004. The car was absolutely perfect. That's a 289 CI Studebaker engine with a Paxton Supercharger.

The owner wanted $23K for it, which was a pretty good deal considering the amount of money and work than had been put into it. Woulda been a real fun cruising car.

Huh? Some of the old Muscle cars are pretty big! Definitely larger than most cars even today.

I get what he's saying. One of the first things I noticed when I got the '69 home and off the trailer is how small it is compared to what I remembered of my '70.

Today the only way I could possibly have sex in the back of the '69 is if it were by myself.

I think the engine compartment looks great painted to match the outside color. Unfortunately for me, Chevrolet painted theirs satin black so that’s what I will be doing when I finish stripping her down.

Lots to be said for character.
Last time I was at Phoenix for Friday night drags there was a grip of 10 second hellcats or whatever the dodges are called.
Nice cars...all looked the same.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a z51 C7 Stingray so I do appreciate modern technology!
But my boat is a 79’ with BBC, Brodix heads, big ass tunnel ram and open headers!
You can’t compare real muscle cars with new space shuttle cars.
Luckily we can do both!

There are some things the old iron does way better though!

Baddest motor of the 1960’s !!!! A true legend.

Not many people know that Chevrolet was in development to produce a 427 to kick the "Cammer"s ass....both Hemi headed and SOHC versions!

They were scrapped before even any testing because the ford "Cammer" SOHC was banned from use in racing, rendering the whole point moot since back in the day the R&D money was tied into racing support to generate sales.

My first car was a 63 Nova. I’ve always wanted to build a 1st gen Nova with a 409, and 4 speed and make it look like it came from the factory that way. There are some bad ass 427CI ( 409’s ) out there.

Come on Boog's! If that's a granddaddy, this is it's granddaddy. This model McCulloch was his first effort after building his own 90 hp 60 ci midget sprint car engine that was banned from racing after he built a twin engine car.
Did you know that Robert Paxton McCulloch was a national champ hydroplane racer in the '30s? Inherited a shit ton of money, set up a little garage and started to build things. Pretty amazing story.

And a decade later, the Frenzel, which is being produced again.

frenzel-supercharger-5-crop.jpg

And the Graham supercharger! Available in the late 30's from the factory.

The Graham looks great on a T engine too.

Thanks for bumping this thread, i'll play.....

Modern muscle cars spank the shit out of old ones, "stock for stock"....but are nowhere near as fun.

Putting big power in an older vehicle is a visceral experience - much lighter, less isolation from the road and wind, and the "i built this shit myself factor" adds a death defying kick to it lol. I'ts what makes me build the old stuff.....that and It reminds me of my dad.

I have my wifes Jeep torn apart for a remodel right now, so she has my truck and that has forced me into daily driving this for the past month.....

4 weeks of daily driver duty so far, just hit 1000 miles on the build. No issues save for having to re-do the line to the oil pressure gauge, and work thru some fine tuning.

3600 stall, and 15mpg...these are mythical numbers, theoretical math in comparison to my old shit boxes. That is the big draw for me to "modern" tech.

But...

A 300hp, 4spd shitbox with a buggy spring front suspension and drag slicks?
It will not do much against a modern "muscle car", but it has to be more fun than doing a line of blow off a stripper's back while pulling her ponytail like a bareback rodeo star!
