This coupling nut on steering cable keeps coming loose ! It actually came off 3 trips ago so I unbolted the exhaust , loctited, and tightened it up. Used it twice last season. While doing maintenance today I noticed its loose again!! I put vise grips on the opposite end and tightened it again but it seems like maybe something is wrong. (As in it shouldn't be backing off) it was a brand new cable when I restored boat few years back. Dont mind dirty boat I just uncovered it after 6 months

I can't say I've ever encountered that problem before.

I think the easiest solution being that it is a relatively thick alum nut is back the nut off all the way where you can drill and tap a small hole in the side of it and install a small ss 1/4-28 set screw then jam it back on and set the screw.

Good luck!

What year is the boat?
Looks to be newer style power steering control valve.

Do you recall if the steering cable mentioned something along the lines of: All newer style / Current production Quicksilver Ride Guide steering cables has a self-locking coupler nut and does not require an external locking sleeve or locking plate device. (Other cable manufacturers also make cables with self-locking coupler nut.)...< Some may not though...

Your cable doesn't appear to have the self-locking nut and I'm not positive if the old style lock devices from Mercruiser would fit your new control valve so Shlbyntro idea seems to be the better option vs buying the two lock kits that used to be available should you not want to try another new cable with a locking cable nut torqued down to 35 lb ft.....http://boatinfo.no/lib/mercruiser/manuals/mercruiser14.html#/598
