Also when I had surgery on my finger after nearly cutting it off it hurt like hell. About 10x worse than after I woke up from Hernia surgery.

Nurse asked me what my pain level was and I think I told her 12. It hurt worse after surgery than it did when it happened. They gave me that stuff that is killing a bunch of Herion junkies - Starts with an F but can't recall the name and it didn't touch the pain. I asked when I could go home and was told after I stopped hurting. She came back a few minutes later and I lied and told her the pain was gone. I just wanted to go home.

Ice was the best medicine. After about an hour with an ice pack it numbed up.

Fentanyl is what you're talking about. Worst pain for all of my injuries was always post surgeries, my theory is nerve stuff when they are cutting to get in.

My worst was pre surgery. I had my patellar tendon pull away and take most the tibia with it and my knee cap fractured and headed North. My knee was basically stuck and bent at 45 degrees. After the shock wore off and an ambulance ride they got me onto a X Ray table and to force it straight. I will never forget that feeling.

This is a trip I’ll never forget. First time we got to meet Dave, Stacy and Kelly, I had a blast with them. I saw the fall and the foot, I had to look away because it was sideways. Looked very painful.
Hope the flight and surgery goes as smooth as possible. It was great spending the half day with you guys, hopefully we can meet up again sometime. Keep us updated.

Sorry to hear this and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Lean on your friends, over-appreciate your wife more than normal, read some good books, treat your kids to some further undivided attention and take care of that ankle through this whole process.

So far for Havasu, Dr. Heiner is the only person that comes highly recommended. We will be meeting him tomorrow. I really appreciate any opinions or recommendations you guys might have on the surgeon front. My ankle surgeon was at CORE in Encinitas and I realize how important it was in having someone that knows ankles well.

https://www.lakesideoi.com/meet-us/dr-daniel-heiner/
Dr. Heiner is also good. Speaking from personal experience with him, if he can't fix it or does not feel good about trying to fix it, he will tell you so and he will also give you some of his recommendation on who can fix it.

So instead of typing it all out a hundred times in text I figured I would just write it here.

We were rafted up about six boats out at a bar called Frank and Luois.. (sp?).

About four boats closer to the dock was a CC called War Party. That was our initial back up ride if we didn’t connect with kelly in his 42 Tiger.

Anyhow the guy that owns War Party is a nice guy named Bubba and this was his new CC (old one was present as well) so I figured I’d go talk with him a bit get a quick interview and setup partying with him and crew later that night etc..

Literally got up on the engine hatch and went to walk across to the next boat. For some reason everything inside of me was saying “don’t take that step.” I literally consciously said “no big deal”. Two similar boars, similar heights, similar seats etc.. just walking boat to boat like I have done a hundred times.

Took the step and when my right foot set down I heard a pop and I just started falling. As I went past my foot backwards I did notice it was no longer facing the correct way. I kinda hit the front of the backseat with my side before landing on my back on the floor.

Somewhere in all of that I heard a second pop and that hurt even more than the first one.. Then when the rest of me came down my broken foot hit the back seat and floor which kind of orientated back to normal.

Ended up being broken in three places and dislocated but relocated on the final impact.. (which was a good thing).

It wasn't a drunk maneuver or anything like that. Just a shit happens moment that I will never forget. After it happened we didn’t have any medicine so a i was drinking on the boat.. Then made our Uber driver stop to get another six pack on way to hospital.

The pain has been unbearable for the last 24 hours and my hands are shaking even right now to it’s hard to type. Only thing that seems to help is IBProfreb 800’s.. the Norco/Narco whatever’s don’t seem to work for me.

Appreciate everyone reaching out and texting etc.

I’m probably gonna be out of commission for awhile.

Big thanks to HeadlessHula for stepping up and taking over most of my responsibilities for the following week.

He is going to Nashville along with Tom to represent rdp and to cover the big press release Merc Racing is doing.

This is one of the biggest things Merc has done in decades and to say my spirits are low about missing it now is an understatement.

RD
That sucks Johnson.
Here’s to a quick recovery.
And, refer to CJ Donahue post about crutches!:D

It sucks you can’t attend the event but at least you can still sort of work?
The keyboard and fingers work fine, don’t they?
That’s the bright side, dude.

I folded my ankle a while back and didn’t work for a month.
Zero income for a month...

You see there? It could be worse. Couldn’t it;)

Sorry to hear Dave, yes recovery is several month ordeal. I broke my tib and fib, plates and 10 screws but the good think is I’m 100%. The pool was the best for my recovery.

Cardinals team docs are Dr. Douglas Freedberg and Dr. Gary Waslewski

Freedberg did my shoulder and knee, Waz did my dad's knee. They are excellent, but with all of the small bones in the foot and ankle area, it is usually best to have a specialist.

I know you don't want to hear this but like Vic mentioned, maybe it's a good time to drop the sticks? I'm sure you had to go to the garage previously to puff before and being a little less mobile should help you set some goals.
Just sayin as your about to have a lot of free time on your hands and can apply some of your energy to accomplishments.
Good luck with the treatments and thoughts sent for a speedy recovery.

Bummer to hear RD. I destroyed my ankle in 2009 riding a CRF 50 in tennis shoes. There were no bones holding my foot to my leg, only tendons and skin. Ended up with a plate and 9 screws holding it all back together. I was off it for 9 months and have full blown arthritis with limited range of motion to this day.

Rehab is the key, I only know that because I managed to spiral fracture my tib/fib two years later on my other leg. Was off that one for 6 months and ended up with some additional hardware (rod through my tibia and 6 screws). Find a great surgeon and double down on their suggested rehab.

I asked my back Dr. who he would recommend for the ankle, he said Dr. Lee would be a good choice if you can even get in to see him. He also said there a few good Dr’s at the Core Institute the he wouldn’t hesitate to use. They are located in Phoenix by the way.

Bummed for ya RD. Hope you heal and can stay comfortable soon. Stoked you've got Stacey. We will be back out at the end of the month (28th) for 10 days. If you need anything dropped off or a want to have a cold one, PM me. Be careful to avoid alcohol when taking NSAIDS for pain and swelling because your will over-work your liver.

that sucks, heal up quick. I have broken many bones in my legs/feet. Had to relearn to walk several times already. Usually the steps are wheel chair, walker, crutches, single crutch/cane. If you can skip any of those steps its a good thing. Ask for a red handicap plaque, it will allow you to park closer anywhere you go which is a huge plus. Could take you 15-20 min just to cross a parking lot in a walker.

Sorry Dave

It's too bad you don't have a job where you can sit on your ass all day and play on the computer while you heal. I remember the water balloon incident and your broken arm very well, 15 years is a good run in between broken bones if you ask me. Take it easy buddy

That was a short video I took of myself and Tyler wasted off our asses in the back of my boat on the trailer.

I don’t remember putting that on YouTube, but I’m gonna delete it.

Hopefully you're at Heiner's office?

Was there at 7:30 am. They removed the splint did the x rays and said the same things the all the other guys said.. “that’s a nasty break, gotta hurt a lot!”

When I left they put me in a walking boot instead of a splint. I don’t k ow anything about medicine but the guys at LOTO spent a lot of time getting the alignment right of my foot before splinting it, and even x rayed after splint to make sure it was straight.

I’m at home looking at this now and with my knee straight my foot is about 10-15 degrees to the right?

Seems weird to me that they would let it be lke that for a week before surgery? But they are the experts not me.

My guess is they aren't worried about it healing that way, your new hardware will dictate that.

If you need another walking cast they’re a lot cheaper online than anything you’ll find in town, I bought another one so I could swim in the pool when I screwed up my ankle two years ago. If you wanted a freebie I got two of them in my garage you’re welcome to.

Seems like a worthy observation and question. Why not ask the doctor?

I am guessing that you can expect to start walking normally around New Years..... just saying

If you don’t already have a wheelchair.... I suggest looking on Craigslist now. You will find one for a lot less than what the deductible will be from your insurance co.

I am sure others will agree.... you are going to want a wheelchair. The crutches get old quick.

Btw.... We now have matching right legs!

My wife and I wish you both the best and truly wish that it all goes as smooth as possible.

They squeezed me in before all the other patients in the morning and he was busy when I was leaving. I asked another doctor buddy of mine and he said be thankful they are doing it this way.

The two guys he was gonna send me to both said they would put an x brace or something like. That’s where the pins are sticking out of your leg to the circle thing.. lol. I told him fuck that! No way no how. I’ll deal with the pain first

They got you in quick. That's a good thing. You're now on the road to total recovery. Good doctors do not mind good questions. As you progress you, and Stacy, may have a few questions. Hope you've found pain relief that works for you. BTW - recommend you don't get one of those little bells at the house which you ring when you need something. It could lead to a visit to a local proctologist for bell removal. Lol

Stacy’s mom and her friend Kathleen are here. Kathleen is a godsend.. literally anything I need she’s got it handled. Except for some of the dude shit that’s coming up here shortly. Putting together a new bbq etc. I’m gonna call upon some friends for that.

I have 16” of titanium in my left lower leg(tib/fib) and broke my right water skiing four years ago and didn’t get it repaired. I can tell you this much about the break you did there Dave; if you were thinking of taking up jogging, that ship has set sail. I haven’t been able to run or jog in over twenty years. The plate sends lighting bolt like pain all the way up my leg if I try.

My wife was operated five days after her ankle broke. Royal Columbian hospital is a RPITA ,but have the best surgeons who are overwhelmed by serving a very large area patients and emergencies. Her ankle had to be reset on the day it broke before the surgery, it was twisted almost 180*.
She got the boot like you have on. She never got a cast that's probably caused the blisters for you. Wheeled her about 3 months before she started walking with the boot on. One interesting fact is, most ankle breaks happen on the right foot.
