Both you 2 shitheads have pissed me off.

Flying Lavey is a close 3rd.
Let’s meet at docktagon and “talk” about it. I don’t know where you come off getting soooo pissed off at me because I am approaching this from a logical sense. Your right not everyone has the money to write a check for 3 million dollar boat. My guess is less than a 1000 people in world do. So again from a logical sense this motor doesn’t make sense. it’s 50 hp more, less rpm and weighs more than a 400. Oh yea cost nearly double!!!! Mercury didn’t do their homework on the cost side of it. Will they sell them. Of coarse!!!! We will see some in havasu. I bet a few dozen but that is about it. So effing what if havasu is a puddle in the boating world. Go to Miami I bet most people have heard of it. In fact go anywhere to people who boat and they have heard of havasu. It’s more than a puddle. But you wouldn’t know that living in cheese-land.

Again I’m glad I got you pissed off. Your a cool dude and I enjoyed having a beer with you a few years ago but just because you get a RDP corporate card and get to go to Mercury Racing’s biggest reveal in decades (that fell way short) doesn’t mean your shit don’t stink!!! Get real dude!

The 450 is just lipstick on a pig. Except this isn’t the fattest pig out there (7 marine). It’s an expensive LAM toy.

Yea I can’t afford this LAM toy and most on here can’t. But I still get to bitch about it. They same way most bitch about DCB and Eliminators.

So go have beer, let me bitch and take the tampon out and chillax and go post some content!!!!

If I still piss you off, fly out and meet me at the docks. I’ll even pick your ass up!!!

(Ps you gotta bring the beer)

Show me how it’s not nearly double the cost?
400r was quoted to me by nordic at 32k before tax, and without rigging. (Btw, that's an additional 4k).
So at 52k, as an existing upgrade, because most of my already purchased rigging will work, how is that double?

First I said nearly double. And second 52k is the low end of the new 450, goes all the way up to 64k as I understand it. So split the difference at 59k and we are nearly double!

Boom!!! Maybe I should take your place in Nashville

My whole argument comes to the fact that this isn’t the bees knees so stop making it to be that! It only 50 more hp and 40% more torque but nearly double the cost.

It’s not that big of a deal. The 400 was a bigger deal, the 860 was even bigger and the 1350 was way bigger. This is just a fad today.

Some real innovation would be set back midsections...then they could stagger the powerheads fore and aft, and fit at least 10 on the back of the six carat cig instead of the measly six.

Fucking hack engineers.

PM me for the address to send me my check.

Actually...that's not a half bad fucking idea to bolt these heavy piles of shit to older small boats. Use a mid plate with a series of idler gears...bolt the midsection/lower the back of the boat, then the powerhead can set 2 feet forward..maybe more to get some weight in the boat.

I amaze myself.

That
So much bitching about a cool and innovative product in the performance boating industry. Too much money for you? Don't buy one. Not practical? Go buy a Prius. Sandy vagina? Stop sitting on the beach. Here...

Boats are cool...

To me, these motors make the 32-35ft cat set up much more attractive. These boats should be in real would conditions high teen to low 120 boats. I also think with the added torque they should be much quicker to speed and more fun to drive. I have an 860 boat that will most likely be replaced by an M33 or MTI 34 if these pan out like the are being represented.

One top tier builder already has a pair on order for a cat in the low 30’ Range. New build so it will be a little while, but the results will be interesting.

Agreed!!! That’s the coolest thing about these new motors with the big torque, The 32 foot and up cat market with this application are going to be a big attraction to a lot of people, I wouldn’t be surprise if we see a few in the 130s, nordics 35ss did just shy of 120 with 400s and no tuning, with 450s I wouldn’t be surprised if they were able to get it in the mid 130s now

So you take an outboard, remove the powerhead, and move it inboard. Sick idea. We can call it an "inboard/outboard".

With the advent of these motors an M33R is most likely in the future. What does a new 700sci/6 drive combo cost? I doubt these will be much slower and should be a good bit less money than that combo. Plus the difference in maintenance and fuel consumption alone will give long term benefit to the 450R. They are expensive for sure, but from my perspective if they can give me similar speed and performance to my existing big blocks at even a slightly lower cost with better maintenance schedules and better fuel economy sign me up!

Leave it to an inboard guy to try to make an outboard an inboard. Sad. Having a hard time just accepting it I guess.

I saw 112 on the recall.

This is why I think Inboards will never die. Just not possible to get the power / speed out of an Outboard. That Bote would probably only need 600's to get to 112, which IMO is underkill, in a Bote like that. JMO.

Your forgetting one thing, 600 less rpm than a 400, yes the 450 has more torque to spin a bigger wheel but boat speed requires rpm

(Not actual data)
But let’s say you spin a 28 at 7000 rpm and with the “450” spin a 32 at 6400 which is faster and by how much. Again not sure how much bigger prop a 450 can spin than a 400.

Have I missed something? I thought the 450r was just a 400 with a supercharger? If that's the case it's actually not that big of a deal.

Now if it's a whole new design of the engine and it makes 450 NA. Then it's a bigger deal.

Now if it's a 450 NA that could go up to 700 then yeah it's a really big deal.

The 450R is roughly based off the naturally aspirated 300R V-8.
It's a 4.6L that's supercharged.

The 400r is an inline 6 that's on 2.6 L

Totally redesigned midsection also.

It shares nothing with the 400R.

I don't follow the outboards much. But love the sound of them when they are wound up.

So what is the percieved most this engine can reach before they have to design a new one?

That would be a question for the engineers at racing...

I doubt it would be divulged. :)

With the 300 and 450 based on the V8, what is the market for the 400.

The 300 is a much different animal than the 450. 300 can still use a 2 hose steering setup, and old style cable controls for throttle and shift, and you can get one that weighs in at a mere 505lbs.
The 450 utilizes the 4 hose electric over hydraulic power steering of the verado series of engines.

Also, the 400r is quite a bit less expensive. As for markets, I have no idea. That kind of stuff is above my paygrade.

I’m not understanding some of the math in these threads. Where does the 200k difference come from?

If you buy 4 -400’s it’s about 40k a motor. 160k

If you buy 4 450’s at 60k a motor (round numbers) it’s 240k.

That’s 80k.

In the math process are we just deleting the 400’s all together? Because that doesn’t make sense?

In small boat world to go faster the general rule of thumb was about a 1,000 bucks per mph back in the day. More like 1500 now.

When you are dealing with trips, quads, quints etc.. you gotta figure that number is gonna go up the bigger the boat.

I’d bet you could graph boat size - HP - speed - cost and scale it on size and it would all line up pretty even..
