motor is hp-500, 502 ho gen 5
had a guy rebuild it in 08
always ran good, but at high rpms (over 4000) it produces alot of crank pressure...
I'm digging in and will update

Its done they have a problem with their dyno. Getting a couple of pulls and well can't wait...

As far as what happened...flattened lifter to much spring pressure...had alot of blow by...last build was 9 years ago so went with new pistons. Cam,roller rockers all the proper machining everything needed for the motor to be right
See ya on the water.....hopefully soon

Dyno numbers are fantastic
Note 51% humidity
A got a 532 bitches

At first it was tough communicating with the shop( both of us being to busy)once we got the ball rolling I personally can't say enough for the crew at JD machine.
The package on the build, balanced weights, very pleased

Back to the cause of failure
The best we can come up with this tick tick rick fuck ,at least the major problem was way to much valve spring pressure ( 300 pounds ish) should be 130-160
Look at all the shims
Don't really know enough to fully understand
Very confident moving forward

Now a little help from the pros, don't want to fuck up now
oil bypass in block gen 5 can let hot unfiltered oil in system, plug or higher pressure relief valve 11 to 30 pounds...found a couple of threads, I don't know what to do

I like the way Dan Olson oil coolers are serviceable , kind of bummed the motor mount in the RT is in the way
for the block mount system, not to big of deal, they have the stringer mount version, any tips for placement, kind of want the best of both worlds most efficient and clean install
any help and input would be most appreciated

I plugged the oil bypass in the block on mine. It’s been fine for 8 years and 400 hours [emoji6]

When Mike owned JD Machine I had one of my engines go there to dyno. Number was not what I expected, but he said their dyno is as much as 10% low, and of course it was in that shed at 112 degrees or so outside temp.

I just provided a new Olson remote mount cooler for a guy after we determined that the block mount would not work with his engine mounts. I am sure it could be had at a great price, and he is due to be in Havasu this weekend.

On a Gen 5/6 block, I leave the center return hole open since the two 3/8" pipe holes in the block are not being used for the remote cooler as they would be in a truck, and I plug the one on the outer edge of the oil filter mounting boss. Dorman #555-101, 20 mm expansion plug I believe. I don't want unfiltered oil returning to the engine.

PS mounting the cooler so the oil filter is easy to service would be a plus, and plan on using -12 lines for the oil.

So from what you have laid out on the table I can take 3 guesses as to why all the shims were used.
Too long of valves or previous work done on the spring seat pockets. The pockets are the head surface the springs sit on around/below valve guide. Poor choice of springs.
Really not a good practice and a terrible band-aid or what I call a "crutch" at best for any three of the scenarios.
Little details are what set the pros apart building a reliable engine, from guys that know just enough and have the tools to perform the different facets of work needed to slap together a grenade.
A good head builder would have opted for the right length valves and correct springs that have the correct installation height with the proper seat pressures needed. I'm not saying shims are never used but 24 shims of varying thicknesses points to a low budget garage deelio or worse, a customer who left a good guy with nothing but bad choices. The last option is a builder who could give zero shits.
Looking at all of the pictures, I did see the valves appear to be sunk into the heads more than what I would call acceptable. The Valve margins appear to be thin as well. Another thing that caught my eye was the valve shrouding. 1-2 hours with care and a grinder could have really helped those heads out.
I think you dodged a bullet just losing a lifter.
A valve coming unglued at higher rpms could have killed the block and heads.
There is so much more to it than the over simplifications of my tiny post that a library could be filled with nothing but books on setting up a set of heads.
Looking forward to seeing how the new build performs and holds up.

Been a rough couple weeks
I had to remodel Shiver River's
kitchen
Sinks, frp and such
Its tough on river time, I rather chew glass than plump

Back to TTTF
The oil cooler is being a little trickier than thought, not enough height to mount on stringer and I did not want to notch seat base...Sooooo gonna mount across stringers under rear seat...super easy access to filter and out of the way...
Check out pictures kinda mocked up with cardboard ...using the hole that is there for seat base...angle aluminum on striger than across....going to get material now

O yea RDP regatta deadline month and counting

My 2 cents...NEVER use a "non by pass" oil filter, NEVER...Just what are you worried about by passing?? It isn't like you're driving through a bunch of dirt/dust out on the water... There is no reason not to have a by pass built into the oil filter..NONE...If you should wind up with metal in the oil, it is waaay to late to worry about filtering the oil...

How many hours were on that motor? What was your cam and lifter choice? Any other changes from the stock 500HP?

I am probably looking at the same project for my 91 gen 6 500HP next winter. So I'm curious the changes that got you those HP an torque numbers. Hope fully I get there before the tick, tick, tick fuck part
