We had one on the skiff we rented from Marble canyon. We ran the river up to the bottom of glen canyon dam. A prop would have been toast. It was a great day.

Up to 250 hp with a tiller handle...You lose at least 30% HP running a pump like this, I was able to switch back and forth with my lower unit, took about an hour to change, as stated above been building them since the 60's, and these would be a game ender on the channel wars with the super soakers as you can trim this up and give them a crack on the throttle and blow people off their feet from 80' away...trust me I know:)

Very common in Alaska.
Jet units or short shaft props for HP limited rivers.

The shuttle boats from bullhead to Laughlin casinos used to have them due to shallow waters. probably still do.

I rebuilt a ton of those when I had my shop in Oregon. They are very much the power robbers but were great in small, low water rivers on the Coast of Oregon. Had several customers that had both prop units and jet units for their boat. The engine when using the jet unit got raised about 5-7 inches and lowered back down when the prop lower unit was used.
