How is your day RDP??? Hope everyone is doing well. I'm finally on a vacation. It is a nice day on Lake Tahoe. Here are a few shots of my old girl in her natural environment. She is a 1955 Chris Craft Holiday 19 footer with a small block. If you have any wooden boat shots or dig the old school boats by all means post up.

So nice, definitely want an old wood boat in my collection. Too bad I'm super busy all week or I'd head up and meet up with you for a beer.

BE 454. Beautiful boat. I wish I had a pic of my friends Chris Craft. Her father purchased it new in 1957. It has been on Tahoe since new and she still has it. it has a small block as well. My guess is that you have most likely seen it around before.

That would be cool to see!. I saw a nice 21 footer a couple days ago and it looked just like a 57 chevy. Teal upholstery and a ton of stainless steel trim it was beautiful.

Thank you for the kind words. The bottom is glassed so I am able to put her in dry. The sides will swell up after a day or so in the water. I just like having fun with her and my son loves to drive.

Tip from the way-back-when :D
If you're wearing a long sleeve shirt or jacket, roll up your sleeves a ways (Or be extremely careful !!).
Catching a sleeve on that wheel throttle will cost ya a plank or two if you're docking :eek: :(
Chilly cold May "Jacket" day at Arrowhead, damn thing had barely gotten wet, just all re-finished, varnish barely dry --- back on the trailer and home for plank R&R -- FUCK :mad:

Ahhhhhh! I can picture the entire scene. And guessing a quiet ride all the way home. I didn’t even notice the throttle on the wheel. Seems it could get a bit sketchy around the dock.

Certainly it was a freak accident, loose cuff design with an opening on the side, just perfect to catch that throttle as MOM as turning the wheel as she slowly entered the dock opening --- pinned the throttle, followed by that sickening sound of a plank snapping --- Poor Poor mom, it just had to be mom :(:(
Yes quiet indeed, that scary kind of quiet, for about a week if I recall.:eek: She never drove that boat again.

Love the bleached hatch and center stripe. Our 19' Racing Chris, the original Taboma my dad ski raced, had the bleached gunnels and center stripe, sweet !!
That boat appears to have had an engine swap during it's life --- that clam shell on the hatch was usually only found on the 141 series flat head six, with dual downdrafts, the clam shell allowed room for the flame arrestors.

I wish some of our ole Chris's had V8's, especially at a mile high --- great swap.
Once dad got into water ski racing, the 19' Racing Chris six was immediately swapped for an early Chrysler Marine Hemi, and the 21' Chris Cobra ran a Hemi as well.
That's a nice boat !! 26' Cobalt is certainly hard not to like too :)
Epoxied glass bottoms is something I wish we'd had. I spent my entire childhood on my back wet-sanding copper bottom paint every winter, I'm quite honestly surprised I've survived all the anti-fouling contaminants this long :eek:

We're having the Penticton classic wood boat show coming up on the 27th. Hopefully it won't rain like last year, fingers crossed.
My friend Jim is the president of SS. Sicamus. It's a museum on Okanagan Lake Penticton.

Cool looking wooden race boat on Lake Tahoe this morning. View attachment 919656

Is this like the sister ship to the Thunderbird Yacht ? Docking could get tricky in a side wind.

Found something on it, seems it was an old Gar Wood race boat Henry Kaiser took to Howard Hughes Aviation and created the Hornet II.

Just google ' Howard Hughes Hornet II ' some great info on a fascinating boat I was never aware of -- very cool, thanks for posting that pic 😁

Not as nice as your boats, but she was still a lot of fun.
The day I found and bought her. 1965 Helton 28ft. "Clinker" hull runabout. She was a little worn.
IMG_0601.jpg.jpeg

More than a year, most every night scraping varnish, sanding old paint and refinishing I was finally able to splash her once again. She looked a whole lot different.

Speaking of the Thunderbird...the wife and I looked into renting it for a cruise next week because I've always wanted to go on it. We looked for about a second until we saw the prices.:eek::eek: $5,000/hr. with a 2 hour minimum.😩

Being fascinated with the Hornet II, I followed up with a bit more reading on it. The story of this boat and how it ended up being re-decked by Howard Hughes Aircraft in aluminum is because Gar Wood Hydroplane was a winning race boat, but lost to an all aluminum "Cigarette IV" Mercury boat.

Excerpt from the story I'll link ---

The Hornet is truly one of a kind. The hull is one of only 10, 28-foot stepped -hull hydroplanes built by Gar Wood between 1929 and 1934.
After losing the Lake Championship in 1938 to the Mercury, an aluminum boat, the Hornet’s original owner Henry Kaiser took the boat to world renowned aviator Howard Hughes. A custom aircraft aluminum deck was constructed.
“It was a wooden boat and he wanted it to go faster,” Hutchens says. “It’s now half boat, half airplane.”

The following year the Hornet won the Lake Championships in 1939 at Chambers Landing on the West Shore, setting the course record. The boat did not lose a race after its transformation and was retired in 1953.
“There are no other boats that won so many races in such a short time frame,” Hutchens says.

It's powered by a Packard V-12 model 1A-1237 airplane engine from 1922 believed to be the only one left.

Great story on the restoration ----

Here's a picture of both the Cigarette IV Mercury (Also originally powered with a Packard V-12) and the Hornet II in modern times at a Concourse.

Mercury and Hornet II.jpg

I found the story about the Mercury (Re-powered with a 420 HP Mercury V8) --- the World's fastest boat in 1926 and it's restoration equally fascinating.

If this was $10k cheaper, Id consider it! https://www.kijiji.ca/v-powerboat-motorboat/kelowna/rare-kavalk-gentlemans-speedster/1512922944 @spectras only knows the builder. My neighbor growing up bought one new identical in 1988. I've wanted one ever since.

Maybe if they could somehow provide a little less information -- sheesh, what's the power ? Most I see are small block Merc Bravo I/Os, and appear to be a whole lot cheaper for some reason than I was expecting. Beautiful boat, but why so cheap on the used market ?

I think its a 350 merc. Going by memory. I've seen them for sale in Ontario for between $28k up to $38k. Although new in 1988 it was $75k. A lot of money in the 1980's for a boat. I think $50k is too much. Probably why its been for sale a month now.

Tony's boats fetch good money, and this one looks to be in mint condition, hence the price, even though it has a fiberglass hull, It's not priced high, considering the low volume of this 19 foot built. The 29 footer even more rare, only 16 built, The 24 Adriatic would be my favourite, but those were 185K new, and it's hard to find them on the market.

It's a niche market for the Kavalk/Kazulin boats, On;y people who buys them usually the ones who know the roots of the Kazulin family of generations. ;) All the 19 Classics have 350 Mercs. The 24 Adriatics have 496Mercs and the older 29's have twin 454's. He now builds the Adriatics with Volvo as well by customer's demand.

I met Tony in 1988 when he delivered my neighbors boat. Neighbor was friends with my dad. He tried talking my dad in on going half on a cruiser. But my dad was more into planes over boats.

Helping a friend repower this 1957 Continental.
Originally had a Cadillac that was switched out to a small block chevy.
We are putting in a 383 and going to put some finned valve covers and a vintage aircleaner(with proper Arrestor) to hotrod it up a bit.
should be ready to go in early October.
Boat will be based in Long Beach Harbor, but we will be bringing it to the River this winter for a few runs to Fox’s.
