Anyone familiar with what year this engine was used in the Ford DRW drive? Where is a good place to look for these trucks?

I believe 99 to 05ish...Stay away from 99's if possible, unless it had a crate motor slung in it. The early heads had a nasty problem shooting out spark plugs/stripping under load. Some of the earlies also had a piston slap issue, collapsed skirts. Seemed like by 01 those issues were gone. Mileage sucks for towing heavy and long distance, but had the power.

Seems to be that most people will talk down about the v10. Ive had 3. Currently have 2. 1 in an excursion. And 1 in my Moho. Yes they like to drink fuel. Yes they have good power and pull very well. No I haven’t had one single issue with any of them. I’m not sure I would ever own a ford diesel ever again. But I don’t pull huge loads or pull for a living. For what I do the v10 has been great.

I had a 2000 with 37's. It was ok, I don't remember what it felt like with stock tires....

It was a short bed so I couldn't pass to many gas stations.

What year did the V10 get PI heads?
That’s the year I’d start considering...

PI heads?

Ford introduced Performance Improved (PI) heads for the V8 mod motors around the late 90’s, and the V10 a bit later IIRC.

The non PI heads (NPI) didn’t flow for crap.

I think the ultimate iteration of the V10 would be with the later ones with three-valve heads, which canoe after the PI upgrade.

The NPI heads on my old 5.4L Expedition made a whopping 185 RWHP. Even with a Procharger blowing 10.5psi, they only made 320 RWHP.

What year did the 3 valve heads come out?
2005. You get 3V heads and the Torqueshift 5 speed trans, which is a huge upgrade over the old 4spd. Go for an 05-up for sure if you can.

When I was looking for used Class A motorhomes I made sure I got the 3V motor and torqueshift trans, way more power and better gearing

When they stopped spitting out spark plugs :)

2005, when they went 3 valve. That is what you want.

The 4R100 is a good trans. The 5 speed is nicer. Plenty of big hp lightnings running around with converter and valvebody only 4r100's.

From the idiots doing the plugs. Cold motor, anti seize, and snugged up not torqued to 13 ft Lbs, I have never had a 5.4 or 6.8 spit a plug.

This. A torque wrench does wonders.

Also the 3v's arent much better. They're notorious for breaking plugs off in the head. I was lucky and didnt break any with pb blaster soak overnight, warm motor, and hitting em with an impact to break em loose. Others arent so lucky and then have to use the "Ford Extractor 3v Tool". Granted they're iridium now so you only have to do this hellish job every 100k.

Yea it is an easy problem to prevent. My 4.6 had revised 9 thread heads :)

I've got a fleet of them at work... change the oil and put gas in them. That is all. I'll never own another diesel in anything less than a class 7 truck.

F450 and 550's though, don't know if there is a power train difference between the 350 ornot.

Not sure about that. I couldn't get the 4R100 to live passed 500rwhp. Eventuallly went 4L80E.

I have an 03 Excursion. I researched the heads issue and found they changed the heads in October 2002. Then, based on my block number I found my motor was built in....October 2002; go figure lol.

125k miles thus far with 1 plug/coil pack change/ no issues.

8-9 mpg around town. Best I ever saw as 14 on freeway.
