Grand Junction diff than Denver re: politics. Not as many transplants by far. Lots of cowboys. Bitchen place if you like the outdoors. Close to anything you want to do other than quality power boating lakes. Doesn't have big city ammenities, but that's what makes it cool. Pretty good wine if you're into that. Can be hot in the summer, snow in winter. I would live there given the right situation.

I have a ton of family in Colorado. It has changed for the worse over the years and is pretty much California in the Rockies. If you are talking retirement, there are better options north. Grand Junction is pretty much the Hub of the mountain towns and there is a ton of stuff there. Colorado still ranks up there on my list of states I would move to, but honestly I think at this point I would pick Utah over Colorado. My version would be a semi retirement though, so I'm not sure how that plays into your plans.

I’m there every month.
Junction is great in the summer.
Can be shitty in winter though.

I’d never live there personally. But I’m done living in the snow. I have to work in it, I don’t have to go home to it.
It’s got its fair share of vagrants and vagabonds.

Some of their politics are shit.
But last I checked it’s still an open range state. Meaning you can walk down your road with a loaded shotgun. As long as you aren’t pointing it at anyone and you aren’t intoxicated, you’re good.
They have critters we don’t deal with in the city;)

Grand is a cute town. Been through it a few times, never more than the 10 minutes to pee and fuel up:D

This Californian would be ok with Grand. It gets a little snow, but not F me levels.
Check out Rifle, Co;)

Would you agree it has the vagrants and vagabonds because the weather is more mild than say, Aspen?
Or anywhere farther up the I-70 corridor?

It looks much more “desert” than most of that drive on into Denver.

There's a few really small towns, not far across the border in Utah.

In part, but Aspen police would NEVER allow any numbers of vagrants to accumulate there! It’s the Beverly Hills of Western CO.
Vail...maybe.

Personally, when I get a day off of work (in Parachute), I enjoy Rifle munch more than Junction.
Rifle is the real deal. The liberal infection is not noticeable there as compared to Junction, IMO.

But they all suffer the same dilemma and that is being an interstate town.
Anytime you have that you have a variety of transients. Whether upstanding citizen or not.
These western towns, even the fair sized Grand Junction, see a lot of pass through traffic.

We had the same problem in Redding/ Anderson.

As far as the politics go, you have Denver and Boulder that tilt the state liberal. My observation is the rest of the state is conservative (maybe not Vail).

I’m retired and live just outside Boulder. We have relatively low taxes (4.3% state income tax) and property taxes are reasonable. I moved from Manhattan Beach, CA.

One trip to the DMV sealed it for me. 10 minutes in and out, no reservation, people were friendly.

Good luck.

I'd pass on Colo unless you are moving to a smaller community that is NOT a ski town.

Liberal disease has taken up there, be cautious. Grew up in the area, lived in Aspen/Snowmass, and down valley, it's not the same place anymore.

I have an acquaintance that just bought 40 acres just outside Pagosa Springs. I haven't been there in years, but he said so far seems pretty conservative.

My brother and sister-in-law live in Lafayette, and both of them have lost 100% of the grey matter in their skulls.

She has a federal government job, makes great money but I don't have a clue what she does. My brother is a professional musician.

Mentioning politics in front of my sister-in-law is like beating your dick flat with a mallet. She is a 100% Socialist. I don't think my brother is radicalized like she is.

Not to derail but I’ll be in Durango in late November. If there’s snow we’ll be skiing but if not does anybody have any other recommendations? Never been there or to Colorado before.

Mesa Verde NP is about a 45 minute drive (to the park entrance). We'll worth the trip.

The train would be on their winter schedule then, so you can't go all the way to Silverton but still is a fun ride. They turn the train around at Ironton which is about half way.

Several places to rent Jeeps and go explore the San Juans.

Fishing might still be good depending on the temperature.

If you find yourself over by Dolores, stop in and have a Burger at "The Depot", my favorite hamburger pretty much anywhere.

Have a co-worker moving to Hurricane. It's a pretty good location as it's about 2 hours to either Mead or Powell. Personally I would stay away from Colorado, they've jumped the Shark with Liberal (Socialist) Policies. They're just 1 step behind Commiefornia.

Well that some good info on Colorado, maybe Utah, they raised the alcohol level so my wife will be happy. The business I was looking at buying in Colorado fell through anyways.

Same with my son. We bought him a Jeep last year he was at Boulder and he had to go to the DMV. I warned him to bring a lunch Incase he was there all day. It was no time and the lady was so helpful to him with he transaction. She even gave him great advise as now being a car owner.

My wife grew up in Grand Junction. Her father still lives there. GJ has gotten a lot better over the years. I would not want to live there though as I think there are many better towns on the western slope. Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Montrose... There also is no good mexican food. But, there is a small Cabella's.

What about Minden or Gardnerville NV... similar climate better politics and less tax. Close to Tahoe as well.

I'm sure you're familiar with the Galloping Goose...for the rest of you, it was a school bus body mated to a railroad chassis, and was used as a commuter between Dolores and other small towns beginning in the 30s, if my memory is correct. It's one of those quirky Americana stories.

Here's a link to the historical society that now operates the Goose. The website has a bunch of videos that are fun to watch.

I played in, on and around that Goose when I was a kid.

The Geese were built to keep the mail contracts for the Rio Grande Southern during the depression. Eventually they were modified to carry passangers along with mail sacks. The flock was credited with keeping the Rail Road solvent for a number of years.

For you SoCal peeps, the engine in RGS Goose #5 was salvaged from the Goose that was at Knott's Berry Farm.

Pretty sure the Mesa is closed to tours in those months.
I believe the museum is open?

There is a test you have to take before you can move here. Gotta stop the Kalifornication of NV!
