Earlier this year my wife beat cancer for the 4th time, we thought life was good again.........about 3 weeks ago she started having vision issues. Got in ASAP to see the retina specialist. Bad news, she is going blind. Wet macular degeneration. It's just about like a death sentence, we might be able to slow it down but that's a maybe. Right eye is about 40% gone and the left is about 20%. doctor says it will not get better. We might be able to slow it down, that will will require a shot in each eye monthly. I can't fathom what she is feeling right now, I know I feel totally helpless. sometimes life is a bitch.

Sorry to hear about this - it’s hard on both of you, I’m sure.

I was inspired by somebody yesterday while at the hospital. He was caring for his obviously very sick wife who was so weak she was in a wheel chair to get around. Watching the love her gave her to comfort her while she was suffering modeled how a husband should act when these situations arise in our life.

May you both have the strength to carry on and enjoy the good things in life...

Gramps,

Sorry life has dealt her and you another setback, prayers sent. I also am dealing currently with my wife's health issues. Take it one day at a time and stay positive is the only advice I can give.

I hope you and her are doing as best as you can. Been through some stuff with my wife's health, and my middle kid's. I know the helpless feeling, and it sucks. All you can do is do your best to help her out.
What I always thought made things tough, when my parents were sick, my kid or my wife, was wondering how they were sick and not me. After what I put my body through, I would do anything to switch places:(

I am very sorry to hear that. You may want to check out your local vision impaired charities. They often have resources/ contacts for both you and your wife. Things like where to find large print, readers, coping classes and etc

Gramps....I have been dealing with eyesight loss for over 12 years..and I have taken 18 shots in each eye...my condition is similar, with leaking vessels behind my right and left eye...I lost my night driving privileges about three years ago. The drug they injected was macugen.(sp) and also a cheaper drug named evastin (sp)...they have held the progression back since 2002. The shots sound horrible to almost everybody...but honestly..it is painless..first shots and only the first shots provided a minor burning sensation for about 4 hours and after that is was easy...actually went back to work that day... They have come a long ways on this disease over the last 12 years or so...Please keep your chin up...sounds like early diagnosis and hopefully it will be very SLOW...

I have a few more for Utah, but they are all Paralympic relayed. One of those things when you date a blind athlete that travels all over the us/ world you tend to make long lists of local resources

My late mother was also a 4 time cancer survivor.

Sorry to read this.

Second opinion done yet??

Kaiser just opened a brand new surgery center by me. I had my cataract surgery done there a few weeks ago, and it was painless and quick. Everything there was HIGH tech!!!

Maybe find out who has the latest and greatest equipment up by you? Could make a world of difference.

Good luck!!

Damn Gramps, the hits keep on coming. We will keep your wife and you in our thoughts. I am glad the cancer is still in remission.
My mother went and is still dealing with this. She was told about the same thing of totally losing her vision. She stayed with the same Dr. for too long in my opinion, I kept pushing her for a second or even a third opinion. After seeing a new Dr. he had just about the same prognosis, but he changed up the shot. I think he went to the generic of the drug the first Dr. was using. He said some people have a lot better outcome with it. This was four years ago and her vision is still about the same and she hasn't had a shot in over a year. Please keep us posted on the treatment.

Gramps....so sorry to hear of the next challenge that you and your wife are facing. I just got back home after 3 months of helping my wife navigate a brain tumor and I am exhausted and feel out of touch with what life used to be. I know that you are taking great care of your wife. Sounds like there are a few directions in options as you two move forward. I know you know it but be sure that you are getting the rest that you need. Prayers heading your way!!!!
