We have flat towed 16’ Ford Explorer, 18’ F-150, and 08’ wrangler JK.

You do need to know if the trans/transfer case can be switched in to neutral. Not sure if the Cherokee can.

The Internet is your friend;)

Jeep Grand Cherokee (2011-2018)After the Wrangler, the 2011-2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the next most popular SUV to flat tow. From the campground to the trail, the Grand Cherokee comfortably carries the whole family, so you definitely won't want to leave it behind.Only 4WD models with Quadra-Trac II/Quadra-Drive II can be flat towed, but there are no distance or speed limitations.

Jeep Cherokee (2014-2019)Jeep offers another top flat towing vehicle with the 2014-2019 Cherokee. The Cherokee's spaciousness allows you to bring along the whole family and all your gear. If you're a big Jeep fan and are looking for an affordable flat tow vehicle, the Cherokee is a great option.Only 4WD models with a 2-speed power transfer unit can be flat towed. There are no distance or speed restrictions when flat towing the Cherokee, but a flat-tow wiring kit will need to be purchased from your local Mopar dealer and installed before flat towing 2014-2018 models (the kit is not required for 2019 models).

Wifes has a grand Cherokee, it has a neutral switch we have flat towed it across the country a few times. Also dodge 4x4 trucks have a neutral switch.

Grand Cherokee needs to be a 4 wheel drive to flat tow and that is the case with most towed's. There are kits that convert to allow a two wheel drive to be towed flat but if you're in the market anyway, get a four wheel drive.

Wrangler. Easy to tow and you really don’t spend a lot of time in it. Running to store or town

I have towed a 1985 CJ7, a 2001 Grand Cherokee and presently tow a 2008 Wrangler Rubicon and a 2012 F150. As has been said, the Jeeps need a neutral for the transfercase. The F150 4x4 is towable from 2012 on (instruction manual tells you how to rub your belly and head at the same time). If you do not want to spend a bunch of bucks, I would get a Grand Cherokee. You can find really nice older ones with nice amenities and clean. They are comfortable and you can do a little off-road exploring if you want.

I've always thought a Colorado or Canyon would be a fantastic toad. Lighter than a full size pick-up yet still has a bed and pretty damn capable.

Another vote for an F150...I tow mine behind my rig and its perfect for a family of 5. I use it to launch and retrieve my boat, cruise around town and venture out off road on occasion.

Quick question for people doing this.. Why tow the vehicle as opposed to towing it on a car hauler? Seems like you wouldn’t have any problems and less wear and tear in everything? As well as being more fuel efficient in the long run?

I towed my Wrangler via a trailer when I went to Moab.
Easier to flat tow if you have an RV, dropping a trailer with an RV is a PIA.
Only reason I towed via trailer was one way trailer rental Moab to SD is over 2500 if Jeep broke on trail.

You have to remember not everyone is going to an open type of offroad place or something equivalent. Alot of rv campgrounds barely have room for large rv let alone area for your trailer.

be careful with the grand cherokees... you have to make sure it is not a full time 4x4. The models with full time 4x4 cannot be flat towed.

^^^ not quite right.;) We have a 2010 GC Limited Hemi with Quadra Drive II. You have to use a ball point pen to push a small switch next to the 4 wheel low T handle to disengage both, front and rear axles to be flat towed.:) Lot of people tow these behind mohos. If you're not sure of the model you're getting, go to a dealer with your VIN#, they can look it up.

Great info all thanks.
Curious if all the flat tower's here are using the towed vehicle braking systems?
Have heard that if you not have brake system on tow vehicle insurance wont cover you in event of accident. ???

I use Ready Brute tow bar. It has a built in surge brake that is connected to the Jeep brake pedal. Simple system actually

.

But the biggest problem is it almost was invisible on the rear view camera..lol

.

And it was perfect for running around Monterey.. Roxie loved riding with the wind..

X2. I've towed mine all over hell's creation behind my Dynasty. ZERO issues.

Although, I will say this. The front tires track differently when towed rather than pushed. Whenever we get to a destination, the tire smell is overwhelming. It must buff them down some for some mechanical reason.

I’ve noticed the same smell. Do you tow unlimited (miles and speed)? I’ve heard different thoughts on this.
