So some updates on progress..

We have hit some major milestones in the last week!

Last week I got tired of waiting around for physical therapy so I had Stscy get me a waterproof bandaid and got in my pool and walked back and forth for an hour or two.

This was literally my first steps in over two months. I paid for it later that night but it was worth it.

Stacy and I left for California for a celebration of life. We got held up from a few things and we weren’t going to make it by a long shot. We finally stopped in Palm Springs and decided to call it a day. We stayed the night at the casino and the next day driving home Stscy had a migraine so I said I would drive. It’s mostly freeway home and I have cruise control so why not. Stopping was done with both feet.

Anyhow drive a car so that was a pretty big deal (to me anyways)

I told @Hammer I wasn’t gonna miss Halletts in Havasu come he’ll or high water so I hooked up with @Melloyellovector abd told him he might have to drive my boat. His son is a pretty big dude so I had him life me up onto the swimstep and off we go!

Couldn’t get out of the boat all day but it was worth it to run down to three dunes and see everyone.

Today I had to Goto the doctor to get some left over stitches out and inspect the latest..

I couldn’t catch a ride so today we set another first, I drove myself by myself to the doctor.

I almost ate shit on my crutches in the parking lot and that was pretty eye opening crutch slipped on a rock.

I pretty much realized had I fallen I wouldn’t have been able to get back up and I’d have quite a few burns before I managed to crawl to shade.. Asphalt in AZ is hot as and that would have sucked.. So now I pay a lot more attention to that.

Anyhow doctors office said to knock everything off and stop trying to get ahead. The wound from the surgery isn’t completely healed yet and they said no pool etc until it is completely healed.

So I have to wait for this to heal up a little more and then I will be back in the pool everyday walking until I can walk.

They scrubbed this thing out pretty good. I am not sure if that is the bone they mushed into powered and shoved in there or if that is infection or what.

But that’s what it is as if today.

Dave if I had a RDP hat I'd take it off to salute you.. Man, you're fucked up, you have a very serious wound going there. Quit trying to get ahead of the doctor's orders or you may wind up limping for life... A "Walk About" in the pool could throw an infection your way that could cost you your foot, and or, your LIFE...
I'll tip my Trump 2020 hat to you for your efforts, but listen to the doctor..Heal ALL THE WAY!

There's a whole lot of shit we take for granted, until we can't do it. Getting racked up teaches us to appreciate things a little more...actually, a lot more.

As for paying the piper after rushing, been there. A lot. Those muscles haven't been used, and they'll let you know. As for wound care, shit can get real in a hurry. I ended up contracting some gnarly something resistant staff infection...at the big name movie star hospital. Twice daily IV's at home for a month. It sucked balls! Do the little stuff, driving alone makes you feel human again. Hell, now you can use the hot rods at Wally-World;)

Bummer to see that they cut you off on the pool. Best of luck for you on moving forward. Keep in mind that the doctors know what is best for you. It is hard but in the end you will be better off. The same is for my wife. She just needs to step back a bit and access the reality of what is going on.

Let me now If needed we will be back in Havasu on 09.18 and I can have my wife start cracking the wipe on you if needed. I know it would be nice to have her not ridding my ass for a couple of days at least. Just let me know.

I didn’t even know you still open wounds. Good thing you didn’t get in the water at 3 dunes, lol
That’s just the white meat, not bone. Walk it off, lol

That’s what I was thinking but they said stop for awhile and let it heal. Then get after it..

I’m the guy that electrical taped my finger back together back in the day but damn... losing a foot or someshit over an infection for not waiting a couple of weeks seems short sited, even if it’s long odds.

I dunno.. I’m kinda bummed because I was kinda hoping I was farther along than I am. Even if they say I’m way ahead of schedule.

The skin healing up/sealing up will go relatively quickly now that stitches are all out. The body doesn't really like to heal completely with staples and stitches. As BS as it sounds, eat healthy. If you can't, take some multi-vitamins. Your body will be pulling materials to heal. Think of it like this, normal, un-injured RD is like a boat on plane. Racked up or healing RD is trying to get there...more throttle angle is needed. Stupid stuff, but will make a difference.

Update since it has been a topic today..

This week has sucked. Started PT, and it feels amazing while they are doing it but damn it hurts later. Said this elsewhere but the pain was so bad this morning I was real close to heading to the ER.. hadn’t hurt like that since after the surgeries.

My ankle itself gets “hot” (not just a little warm), especially on the front of it.

Anyhow I didn’t want to clutter up any other threads more than I already have with this BS.. just been miserable all this week.

Wounds are almost healed but still not quite done.

Anyhow here’s my club foot. Lol.

I think you just need to add a little weight to your left foot, looking a little thin:p

If the heat is only from the foot, and you feel fine still, welcome to gym class. Every muscle and bone in your foot has been on vacation. Muscles you didn't even know you had, have atrophied. Now you just bitch slapped them. Next week will get easier, even though you'll be doing more. Same with the week after that.

I always thought that when something like you are going through that "feeling hot" was a sign of infection. Don't wait to long to get a Drs' opinion on that pain.

Been scared to go because I don’t want to get an infection from the water.
Yes, please avoid this. Gangrene and it's brother Dry-gangrene suck unless one is into amputations. Stay healthy, I need my RPD fix.

Too bad, lol. :D

I can sympathize with you on the foot deal, although I didn’t jack myself up as bad as you did. My recovery was fairly speedy.

It’s a struggle from the womb to the tomb.
I’ve akready gone to bed and am up, with a sore jaw.
Busted a molar, have a temp cap on it.
If I stay upright and moving a little there is next to no pain.
But if I lay down or try to sleep, it gets very angry.
Wonderful!

Dave, one word, “lotion”.

Doesn’t matter.. we put it on, and then it looks like that a few hours later.

Someday this shit has to end.. Thing has been on tilt since the regatta. I mean barely get out of bed pain for four days straight..

You can see the indentation from my flip flop.

I have friend who shattered his heel on a dirt bike. After a few years of reconstruction which included flying to specialist he said fuck this pain. They cut his leg below the knee off. He now has a peg and is much happy, without the pain. He lost a few years of his life, couldnt work, couldnt do shit.

So......thats a option

That's a foot that needs better blood supply.and circulation now.
Be careful with this. June 15th to Nov. 7th is knocking on 5 months.
4 time broken boner on my end and usually 6-8 weeks and things are almost back to working again.

I would have a specialist check it out.

Dave - it might be worth having a doc look at your circulation below the knee.

Lots of people that smoke and are over their ideal weight suffer from peripheral artery disease. Which basically is the plaque in your arterial structure below the knees reduces quality blood flow.

Bad flow = poor healing.

Still having open wounds after this amount of time tells me something is up that is causing delayed healing.

If it were me, I’d go to the cath lab and get a guide wire down there and stent it or open it up...

Good luck in your recovery

Dave - As I mentioned I had a very similar break / surgery and I was much further along in terms of skin healing. Your swelling is likely driven by the circulation issues noted above coupled with a case of OFDI also known by the medical profession as over fucking doing it.

You gotta make healing a top priority.

Dave sorry to see you continue to have issues. I have friend who had a similar break to his foot about the same time as you. I got together with him for the first time last weekend. He was doing fairly well considering the challenges the two of you have gone through. Let others have noted something is going on with your leg and break. It might be a good time to seek out medical assistance with a specialist as the others have suggested.

If not and you have to loose the limb you might want to get the domain name.....

Next time you go to Laughlin, pick up some gummy bears.

I don’t smoke either but half a gummy every once in a while takes the edge off...at least that is what my buddy tells me.

Your friend had a similar injury? How’s his foot doing now?

People that have had this injury told me that it will swell up for years afterwards.. but I just can’t help but think this thing should be better off than it is..

I don't doubt the swelling issues will last a long time, you damaged a lot inside there.
Nothing worse than rushing recovery. Considering the extreme breaks you incurred I really felt it'd be a good year for you to feel halfway normal. You kinda pushed it a bit lately too. Tsk-tsk but thanks for the fun weekend.
Most Physical Therapist are well versed if something seems out of line and likely would advise you to see your doc.
What does your doc say about your progress/circulation/ etc.? That's who you need to consult.

might lesson some of the pain...

It was crazy in that the two of you were about a week apart. He came over for dinner last weekend. He is able to walk although it is slowly. We have about 10 steps up to our home and he walked up without any difficulty. I even laughed because I offered to piggy back him if needed. No way I could do it being that he is 6’4” and about 275-300 lbs. Leaving the house he did take the steps one at a time but did not need any assistance. I did not look closely at his leg being that most of the time we were talking about the wife and her brain tumor, surgery and recovery most of the night. What I recall the scar was not as festering as your does.

I also have an friend who is a heavy equiptment mechanic who has been out of work for 4 years with a shoulder injury. long story but one bad doctor after another and then replacement that was an issue now he might have to fly to the mainland to get it done right for the last time.

One thing that I have found in the last 8 months with my wife, friend and other people we have met having second and third surgeries is that complex procedures should not be handled in small towns.

Issues of people in the last 8 months that I have come in contact with

Friend in Honolulu 3 surgeries on his shoulder
Wife’s brain tumor and surgery in San Francisco at UCSF, Flawless and incredible recovery. Still a few issues but not as bad as it could have been.
Double lung transplant at UCSF second attempt after a failure in Petaluma
Third brain surgery at UCSF after two failed attempts in Modesto
Brain surgery in Sierra Nevada only to come to UCSF for further treatment.

Best to you Dave. I don’t like to see anyone go through medical issues.

Yeah it would. Especially the part of how high to go? Just the ankle? Midway? Take the knee also?

Shit the other leg should match right?
Everyone loves a option...since my friend had his injury on the foot they had options where to chop the leg. Its about 4 inches below the knee. This allowed the best peg. He snowboards, jogs, all types of stuff.
He isnt a poor guy. The option was made sense. The years of pain and questioning recovery to ever happen made him do it at a team of doc recommendations.
Ole RD with recover, but its going to take serious time.
Now on a serious note, your body needs every bit of healing power it has. Drinking. Smoking, diet etc doesnt help. Your body is also working on those things also. Im not one to talk, im over weight. But that ankle is not on a clean leaving 18 year old.
It will take time. I mean no disrespect dave. I live my life the wrong way, injuries are difficult for us non athletic good time no fucks given types
