A couple of my friends went down for the auction. I had sort of forgotten about it even though I think I sent the link to one a few weeks ago. I regret that I never took the time to stop and shoot some photos, or even make a run out there with my camera one day.

... I remember Desert Center well from all the years in the 60s of hanging at the Polynesian by Parker dam...But I truly can’t say that we ever stopped there for food or fuel...

Little known useless fact:

The Kaiser Company owned and ran the mine to the west of Desert Center. A lot of employees and families lived in Desert Center proper. Because of the remoteness and no ready access to medical care for the workers or their families. Kaiser hired a Doctor and signed the employees up for, like a dollar a month and families for an additional dollar. The Dr. and his staff would take care of their medical needs. This was the beginning of Medical Insurance and Kaiser got out of the mining business and into the Health Insurance business. Of course this is the same Kaiser Permanente medical conglomerate still around today.

In doing my genealogy, I found I am descended from a bunch of Kaisers from Germany around the early 1800s. I just gotta figure out how to claim my rightful place as CEO.

The Desert Center Wikipedia page has a whole lot of cool history and details about how Kaiser started the program.

I found a few pics that I took about 5 years ago just driving down the main drag. It was kind of eerie, just like everyone just got up and left.

My Uncle worked at the Eagle Mountain mine for many years, mid to late 60's if I remember right, and he and his family lived in the mine community at the mine. Desert Center was their "town" to get supplies. He always dreamed of having a gas station in Desert Center and when he retired from the mine he bought one there somewhere. Not long after, one late night, some punks stole something from him and he chased them into the desert and they killed him :(
