We made it in '17 it was a rad service.
We got to see the changing of the flag and we got a commemorative coin.

That’s pretty rad! Wish they had someway of preventing the flag from hitting the dirt at the end.

Over all though what an incredible display of patriotism! Good on them!

That's been going on for awhile. I have a couple in my desk at home...

Oh and I have another job for you. Let me know when you're ready.

He did the best he could Dave the flag actually did touch the sand but it landed on a group of people so it was being held up.When he landed he literally ran over and picked up the flag from everyone

I get it, and I get the intentions etc.. was just thinking out loud if there might be a way to prevent that

Why? Just give it a proper disposal when done. Most Boy Scout Troops do flag burning ceremony every year. Literally hundreds of flags are collected and properly burned, every single year. They don't last forever yano. ;)

That’s a monster flag to be doing that every year? That thing has to cost a small fortune?

FYI many Elks lodges have flag retirement drop-off boxes at their front entrance or near their flagpole available for anyone.

Elks work with the Scouts with this.
Newport Beach, Simi and most others.
Don’t need to check in just open the box and drop in the flag.

Flag retirement Ceremonies are calendar’d throughout the year.
If it’s a big flag you leave it with the lodge secretary in the office and she’ll get it to the right person.

In the Marines we used 3 sizes of flags:

Storm smallest.

Garrison next size up.

Holiday the biggest.
Majestic to watch it in a breeze.
So big you can hear it snap in the wind 1/4 mile away.
Main entrance to Camp Pendleton in mild weather they may hoist a holiday flag on Sundays and Holidays if no half mast order nor stormy weather is in effect.

the sandbag on the bottom weighed little over 50 lbs, plus it was a huge flag. they did the best they could without getting someone hurt.
