What engine would you rather have in a Ford Super Duty?

This is not going to be a new truck but a used truck. I would like to know why you would choose one engine over the other engine.

I had a ford V10 and it was great. Towed fantastic, got ok mileage, and was really reliable. My dad had one in a motorhome and he loved it too.

I dont think mine ever got as low as 5.5-6mpg, even towing heavy.

I had an excursion with a V-10, but 176,000 miles on it zero trouble, ave 13 mpg driving and 9 towing, buying used I was told by a Ford guy check tie rods and exhaust manifolds on the V-10 super duty
What will work for you, depends on what you’re going to use the truck for

I have a 2000 2wd v10 excursion. Stock besides 285/70r17 AT tires. Fully loaded on a road trip not towing we got around 11-12 mpg Seeing 13.5 at one point In town it’s around 11mpg daily driven. Even towing my 25 Cole I’ve never had it drop to 5 or 6 I have no complaints about the v10s I’ve had. Not much difference from our Tahoe with mpg. But excursion tows way better

My choice would be “not the V10”

I’d go 6.2 over the first-year 7.3, given Ford’s track record with engines.

The only problem with the V10 was the spark plugs blowing out. Other than that, not a bad engine...

If you can tolerate the mpg towing. That would get old Real fast for sure.

I don't think the spark plug issue is wit the 3 valve heads?

Thats about what I saw too loaded down. The truck empty would get 10+, I dont recall how far above 10 though. 1 ton dually crew cab with 3.73's.

We have a few 6.2 l in our fleet and they work great. No major problems and one has 140k mi. Mileage isn't great but we load the shit out of them with diesel tanks and a lot of tool's.

The people saying they got 5mpg are one of a couple of groups. the dodge guys that get 30+ mpg while towing 32k behind them, the Toyota guys that can "Safely" tow 18k with their Tundra, or Chevy guys that fall somewhere in the mix. Oh, one last group, the ford person with a 10" lift on 44"s with stock gears towing 8k at 90 to 110 to the river. Most of these components can be mixed and matched as needed, you get the picture.

The first two years of the V10 (99 and 00 I think) had the sparkplug issues but all after that were fine. Get the three valve motor, there is a huge power difference and no fuel mileage penalty. Everyone I know with them likes them. Anyone with the "big" motor in their truck complains about fuel mileage, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, doesn't matter. The big motors are all thirsty.

I had a V10 in my F550 dump. It got around 5mpg but I never drove it on the freeway. It was geared low that's for sure and loaded half the time. Great truck sold to one of the roofers who uses it daily.

Had a 2002 Excursion with a V-10 for 15 years. Never let me down. Sold several 6.2 work trucks. Most of them plow trucks. They have held up very good.
