So RDP peeps, looks like we'll be near Julian Ca. for Thanksgiving. Is there anything around there for a young family to do? From what I can gather, the town its self is pretty small. What say the RDP brain trust?

Wear your long Johns, it's going to be cold and possibly 6" of snow over Thanksgiving --- that also means 'Nut-to-Butt' flatlander traffic jams as far as you can imagine.
Snow over a holiday, bless you :eek::eek: OH and bring chains, especially if you plan on going up higher towards Mt Laguna ---- CHP gets way over zealous about chains knowing folks can't drive on anything resembling snow.
In short, it's going to be a full on cluster fuck :D

Main St is all you got, won’t be hard to figure out. Takes about 5 min to walk if you have 2 broken legs.
Julian Apple Pie Co.
Julian Cafe
Eagle Mine Co. (For Mine Tour)
That’s it!:)

Take the family for a horse and carriage ride.
Find a quaint restaurant off the beaten path.
Julian Pie well known however, I've not been unhappy with anyones pie up there.
Couple wineries to taste at as well.

That "quaint restaurant" off the beaten path, will be like trying to find a similar establishment in Disneyland on the 4th of July
The pies will be gone by 7AM :p
Come on Ziggy, you know how snow days are in San Diego even on a Tuesday, let alone over Thanksgiving  :D

If you have a truck or 4x4 cruise to Borrego Springs and go to Fonts Point. Mt Cuyamaca is a good hike also.

Otherwise have some pie check out the shops drink some beers and relax

Nice candy store upstairs, if they sell out of pies, the sale them at stater brothers. Be careful on the 79 they took away most of the passing lanes so people pass in the wrong places.

Oh and there is a pot shop where the old casino was.

Been a few times when there were lines out all the main st eateries so walked up the hill a block or two and found a nice mom/pop shop.

I was able to collect a few Tickets on my bike many years ago. 79 was a hotspot to ride through when I live out there.
YMMV though. :p

The town was co settled (not co-founded) by ex Missouri Slaves that may have got the whole apple pie dealio going.

Taste the King David Apple.
Only place we’ve ever found it.

My mom used to bake apple cobbler with them with a home made shortbread topping and homemade caramel apple filling.

Used to be a cool little slop chute the Chat n Chew Diner.
Not enough year round biz so it folded but Huell Howser found a eating spot of interest sometime back.

Drive down towards Ramona and go to the Camel Dairy. They are only open one weekend a month, but it looks like the weekend after TG is good: https://cameldairy.com/open-farm-days?fh-u=2d6934ed-e646-4fe9-9598-c985f801f4c3

If it is not too wet out, head down Banner grade to Mine Wash. The road to the park trail head is a wash, but I drove a 2wd Toyota Matrix up it, and it was fine. Aside from the native mortar holes left, there is a small valley stacked with RV sized granite rocks which makes a cool place to climb in, under and around. It is in an actual wash though. I would not advise it if it is raining: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24488

Just before Mine Wash there is a road that heads north and drops into Borrego Springs. The South side of Borrego has some of those cool iron art installations: https://www.desertusa.com/borrego/bs-art.html of course you could drive into Borrego Springs and do some of the hikes weather permitting.

Lol. Thank you for all the reply's. We are taking our 5th Wheel (second actual trip in 2 years) and staying south of Julian at KQ ranch. Should be interesting. Depending on the weather I figured some hiking and possibly a trip towards Salton Sea. My tow rig is 4 wheel drive so a little dirt won't hurt it on our day trips if needed.

I'm logging in all the above suggestions. Really appreciate it.

Very cool I highly suggest cruising through Borrego Springs and going to Fonts Point since you have a tow vehicle.

So we made it. Took the 8 to the 79 then back north. 4 wheel drive, sideways at one point, pulling 37.5 ft fifth wheel. It was a bit sketchy at times...lol. Pull up to the entrance and the lady says... "I'm surprised they let you up the hill." Followed by " they didn't call you? They were supposed to tell you we don't have any full hook up spots left."

So I tell the kids life is an adventure and that's why we are here. About 8 to 10 inches of snow on the ground and it's cold as fuck. Lol. Tomorrow it's not supposed to snow and just be cloudy. We'll see.

Drove to Julian... what a shit show that was.. lol

Down the S2 there is Agua Caliente and they have hot tubs and some great star gazing. Not much else to do there but ride bikes and have a fire.
