Wife wants crown molding. I just can’t justify the cost right now. She wanted the kitchen cabinets updated (20 yrs old )and likes the wainscoting. So since a 10k - 15k plus remodel wasn’t in the cards either. I did the redneck do it yourself inserts. Added some glass inserts a little bit ago. Fresh paint. All in all I’m quite pleased with our effort. Definitely not professional but much nicer than it was.

In my opinion if it's done right it will never go "out of style." Living room has a 12' ceiling and 10' ceiling in dining room. When I did mine I used the 6" baseboard on the wall and the ceiling and put a piece of 3" crown in the middle. Makes it look like a solid piece of 12" crown. Very cost effective and a lot less money than buying 12" crown. View attachment 825720 View attachment 825725

Weak and unimpressive. You might want to rethink that path that you have taken. Man up, grab your balls from the wife’s purse and give it another try. Once you do it right post up again.
Wasn’t trying to be impressive or gaudy. Basically just trying to cover up the poor workmanship from 40 years ago. Where the walls met the ceiling was kind of rough and nearly impossible to get a straight paint line.

Thank you...The crown is very easy to do because you use MDF. At the same time I did the crown I also did my door surround openings and all the fireplaces using the same material. Again very easy to do with not much skill level. On the door surrounds you just keep adding material until you think it looks good enough..With MDF if your cuts are not perfect you can use painters caulk to make the corners perfect. After I caulk all the corners and joints I use a wet grout sponge to wipe it down. Here a photos of some the door openings. The door openings are nothing more than large fireplace surrounds..easy..The skill level to do the door openings is actually easier than the crown molding.
