Just read where over 411 restaurants closed in San Francisco last year . Some Ca restaurants are charging a Ca surcharge because the cost to run a business in Ca is so high . What’s next ?

Any restaurant that charges that latest fee I just deduct from the tip I give. I've seen the latest 3% fee for whatever nonsense. So if I was giving 15% tip, now I give 12%. Also I always compute the tip on the actual pre tax cost of the meal. SOO many places do their tip calculator suggestions with after tax prices....

Keep it up CA, they are just following in the footsteps of New York and Illinois.

Not exactly sure how this gets back at the restaurant by cutting the tip amount. The tip usually goes to the wait staff which are just employees of the restaurant. If you want to stand up to it, just stop going to the restaurant itself and not choose to take you boycott out on the wait staff.

What I really liked about our travels to Australia is tipping is not customary there. The restaurants have a surcharge. Servers for the most part are not at your beck and call as we are used to here. Most every place we went to you order at the bar or counter and they bring your food to you, ala Hanger24.
Personally, I liked it that way.

The flip side to that is, when foreigners eat at US restaurants.

I was a waiter/bartender thru college, and I hated waiting on foreigners because they don’t tip...when you’re making $3.25/hr as a tipped employee, waiting on them takes money out of your pocket.

But overall I think the tipping culture sucks balls.

I don’t tip my surgeon, but I tip the flunky who pours my coffee?

Just raise the price of your product and pay your fucking employees.

Seattle really surprised me. Servers get the normal minimum wage which is now $15+ AND they get tips. In IL we had a separate minimum wage for positions with tips which was like $5hr

It’s not meant to get back at anybody I’m just not going to pay the 3% so it has to come off somewhere

Very true, I had to follow up behind my German relatives to make sure an appropriate tip was left.
But honestly, as you said, our country should just pay the employees fairly.

I think we are all getting just the tip. Haha..
I subtract tax on the the final bill to estimate the tip. If the service was good, I always make sure to tell the managers and wait staff I was happy. I just grimace and pay. I buy top quality food and prepare it myself with the fam. The extra 15-20% I would pay just in a tip buys some nice extras for a fancy meal.

I feel bad for the servers. They are just doing their job and it’s not their fault. Just hard working folks doing their job trying to make a buck. I respect them if they are hustling.

If I have a good experience I make sure they are tipped well. Shoot even if I have a bad experience, even if they tried, I still tip.

We were there this Fall and it was nice not tipping. It was hard not to tip, but we were told by an Australian that tips are not expected.

I usually pay the bill less tip and leave the tip in cash, but anymore a lot of places you order and a server brings you your meal and the waitress might check on you once, how does that justify a 20% tip!

I was told by a few Europeans and Japanese that tipping in a no-tip culture is borderline offensive.

It’s as if you feel sorry for the person, and they don’t want your pity.

Not sure how screwing your Wait Staff out of a tip is hurting the Resturaunt Owner??? JUST STOP - THATS FUCKED UP!!!

Any place that charges a 3% BS Fee will not get anymore of my cash. There’s lots of honest resturaunt owners that would love my business.

So I have a problem with the idea that there are so many "hardworking folks trying to earn a living idea". I have two friend who have successful restaurants. They each have about 25-30 employees. Both of them say the same thing, the employees are mostly a pain in the ass. They both say that none of them will work full time because it would disrupt their benefits they receive from the government. They say if they work full time they lose that money from uncle sam....

There is at least one restaurant in Havasu charging a surcharge since Prop 206 passed (mandatory minumum wage increase). It's only a dollar (for now), but this is not limited to California.

I saw this on the news last night. It was about a bunch of restaurants in SF charging a surcharge that is supposed to go to farmers to help with making the farms better. (reducing cow farts) They said it was voluntary for the restaurants to charge it and for the consumer to pay. It was like 1-3%. A couple customers they interviewed said they didn't mind paying it but would like to see some accountability when the money actually ends up. Like the gas tax I am sure.

I was told this surcharge is optional, and it can be deducted by just mentioning it. Is this true?

I can understand a Business owner putting a line item in the bill to show a particular government tax they disagree with, But the unintended consequence is alienating half of your clientele which may be for or against the issue. I think most businesses will just raise prices accordingly to cover their costs.
The left will never understand that corporations and businesses do not pay taxes, they are just the tax collector.

It was a weird feeling not to leave tips.
Bali was the same way. I think most of the world is, tipping is mostly just an American thing.

Just read where over 411 restaurants closed in San Francisco last year . Some Ca restaurants are charging a Ca surcharge because the cost to run a business in Ca is so high . What’s next ?

I don't know but charging a "California Surcharge" is stupid. Charge a price that reflects the cost of doing business and you won't piss off your customers. Nobody charges a Hawaii surcharge or a New York surcharge. I can pretty much guarantee that you will pay more for the same meal in those two states. There are approximately 4,400 restaurants in San Francisco. This is a closure rate of just under 10 percent. New York City has a first five year closure rate of 80 percent and an overall annual closure rate of 26 percent. My brother is part owner of a restaurant in the Castro and says they are still doing pretty well. It looks like there are many reasons the owners are citing for closure as follows:

“So many restaurateurs go through rough time. They all complain about the cost of food and the rent,” said Scarpone.

Restauranteurs said many factors are to blame, like the high cost of operating in San Francisco, high crime rates, dirty streets and long wait times for permits.

Plus, new challenges in this digital age like the ease of being able to order food online.

“All these tech companies with free food and wine available to their employees day and night,” said Tavelli.

Restauranteurs like Tavelli are in the red and looking for new ways to stay afloat by offering special events and introducing their own wine clubs.

Generalize much. There are good and bad employees no doubt.

Running a restaurant is hard.

Finding good employees in ANY business is difficult. So I sure hope they don't feel alone in their journey to find good help especially in their business. We all go through it so they shouldn't feel alone.

To answer the original post about what's next for Commiefornia, your property tax being fixed will be a thing of the past very soon.
Once they find that the tax base is declining they will be forced to increase taxes on what is already owned. They will change the policy so that the tax is based on THEIR assessment of current value and then tax you on that CURRENT ASSESSED amount. Socialism at it's best. Socialism only works until you run out of OTHER PEOPLE'S money!

It's not all bad though. Once the mass exodus is over and the value of everything declines to a fair value, people will return and rebuild California again. It will most likely be the next 2 generations that will be the ones buying there so what they can afford then will determine what the fair value will be. That, is Capitalism at it's finest.
Supply vs Demand. :D
Unfortunately I won't live long enough to see the rebuilding.

As someone who worked behind the bar in several locations many years ago I'm in full agreement with this. I also make it a point to try to tip in cash whenever possible. I'll agree there are servers who simply shouldn't occupy the position but there are also plenty who do an excellent job and should be taken care of.

Generalizing yes. But not one of the 50 or so employees between the two guys will work full time....

I’ve found GREAT employees go on to be owners.

Good owners will always out work their employees because it is their business to lose. You can’t pay someone enough to understand that pride/fear.

In regards to people not working full time because of government benefit loss.

Well clearly the position doesn’t pay enough to offset the alternative.

Why would an employee work more hours to make less? I disagree with the viewpoint but if the employee was a go getter the restaurant would be a temporary job.

Which leaves the owner hiring/training a new unexperienced employee. Starting the cycle all over again lol.

And the weather is tits out here [emoji1598][emoji1589]
