Officially Unofficial of course: July 25th 2020 8:30 at the starting line with a 9:00 start.

Run what you brung, ski how you want, come out for a great time.

Bench racing, stories, lies, and you shoulda been there’s, happening after the “fun” run at the ramp parking lot.

My crew, Team 222 will have a BBQ and an Ice Chest after the race... errrr.. fun run!

Craig Gregory - Driver
Brian Vesley - Riding Backwards
Brian Samaniego - dope on the rope

I just hit up a ski racer I know to see if she wants to run it behind a 19’ Mod VP boat...like the old days. I have at least 3 support boats lined up...Can’t go to big river, might as well do Catalina.

You run a 19 Mod VP to Catalina? That is so rad.

And 18 ft flat bottoms before all the big boats came along. Guys would have a gas can between the observers knees so they could make it back if you missed the direct line

Coast Guard contacted you yet? Surprising how they know about things, they called me about my permits and insurance for a "gathering" I had.

So cool that this is happening. Marking it on calendar .... Seems like we get a fair amount of Go Fast boats down off Newport that morning as well. Maybe they just go out parallel... not sure.

I’ve never done a ski race or have the correct equipment, but I’d love to give this a shot.

The Long Beach Boat & Ski Club is eagerly planning the 2021 Catalina Ski Race. We are extremely disappointed this year’s ski race was unable to be run. As such, we are determined to make next year’s race, the World’s GREATEST Water Ski Race yet! Please stay tuned for updates on next year’s race and the new activities that will be a part of the 2021 Catalina Ski Race.

As this year’s Catalina Ski Race was scheduled for July 25, 2020, it should be clearly understood that any other water ski race or activity occurring in Long Beach Harbor on this date, is in no way affiliated with the Long Beach Boat & Ski Club. The LBB&SC has not been involved with any planning or implementation of events organized formally or informally on July 25, 2020. The LBB&SC has notified the water ski racing community, Catalina Ski Race supporters and the City of Long Beach of the cancellation of the 2020 Catalina Ski Race and our disassociation with any other planned Catalina skiing events taking place on July 25, 2020.

We greatly appreciate your support and understanding during these trying times and hope you and your families are safe and well.

All our very best,

The Long Beach Boat & Ski Club

Trying to get this on my schedule for 25th.... need a couple details if you don't mind. When you arrive at Avalon do you get a can and have lunch or switch skiers and do a quick turn, etc....? Any additional details for those non skiers of us who might simply want to drive our boats out from wherever to Avalon and stay the night but be a part of it without skiing. I've done the annual Int'l riggers event from time to time and thats a blast. PS... nice tee shirts, took me a minute to figure the differences between the two lol.

As this is a fun run and not an actual race you can do whatever you would like. However I believe most boats with skiers will turn about a mile off the casino and head back to Long Beach. If you get a mooring you can probably just watch from there or troll around about a 1/2 mile off the casino. If they actually get started at 9 AM your looking at 9:30 ish for the first boats.

Coolio.... good info.... so skiers actually do a turn just outside Casino, ha.... then haul ass back 25 miles to LB. Awesome Beast Mode stuff! I've heard about this event forever. Wild

Well shoot.... that'd be worth grabbing a can at Descanso and watching. Seems to me I heard those guys haul butt with super long lines.

Yes sir! Depending on the boat and skiers ability of course.
Todd has completed the race in a hair over 45 minutes behind a 43 foot Nordic....62 miles.... Across the open ocean.... That's about a 79mph average. He runs about a 200+ foot line. That year I believe he crossed the finish line right at or just over 100mph.

My best time is an hour and nine minutes behind a 27 foot boat with about 180 foot line.

from a few years back but its a good watch...

Hey thanks great info... Ed & Sandra Herbst bought TWO houses on the sand side by side in my hood right about then [2010] We met them and their families. Fun crowd. Unfortunately they've since parted ways. I saw his red Terrible boats in our harbor but never knew they were involved in this race. I'm making plans to launch from Newport around 7am 7/25 so I can make it out to Casino in time to see your group make the turn. Give me your best guess on timing you'll make that turn and how many boats you project to have racing [informally, ha] Many thanks!

It's a go! Most teams will be out there about 845, with a 900 start.

I had to cancel due to work conflicts... Which sucks. Dave Chandler will be skiing in my place behind the 21' lab sport #222.

Thanks... just checked weather app. Perfect conditions: 9am out of LB shows 1-2knt wind with 1-2 ft swells 7 secs apart. Can't ask for better conditions. Taking a 21' over huh..... well even the returning shows max of 5 knt winds by noon so little bitty boats should be fine. Ain't like folks will be stopping and looking around the channel, lol!

My crew here in Newport are a bit pissed.... we all planned to head out earlier at daybreak grabbing a can at casino and stay overnight but that went in the shitter due to a retarded mechanic issue all week. Argh. Hope the turnout is positive... I'll have my ears perked up in case any go fasts head out from Newport around 7 for Long Beach start. Years passed I can see em from my deck over the Wedge.
