When I started in 1983 (eleven years old), a pack of smokes was around $1.75. Since the border is closed I haven't been going to the states. At duty free, they have their own brand of cigarettes that are $18 per carton. Normally I buy those.

I can remember 60 cents a pack and going to the neighborhood store and telling the man I was buying for my mom, and he would sell them to us. I was probably 10. I can not fathom paying $13+ now.

The Chinese store owner didn't even ask if it was for mom. We smoked out front of the store. Even at eleven years old, no adult said anything to us. When I was a little older and rode the public bus into Vancouver. You could smoke on the bus. You could smoke on planes as well. In malls. Smoking was everywhere.
