It just sounds like Texans can’t take care of themselves and rely on others to provide simple things like heat...

lol. And you’re here in Texas witnessing this in person? That’s right, I didn’t think so. I’ve only seen Texans helping Texans get down to the business of getting things done. The media and those outside Texas all want Texas to fail.

People just can’t comprehend that a 100 year storm rolled through (2011 cold was not nearly as bad per people who lived through it) and the electric grid wasn’t setup for this extreme temps. Neither were pipes in houses nor was there any real assets to clear roads. You can spend billions to prepare for a 100 year storm, but then you’d have billions to spend on maintenance and upgrades for equipment sitting doing nothing for 99.9 years. Though I think some things should have been addressed in various systems.

Regardless of one's opinion or feelings.. I challenge you to find one major utility in the USA that doesn't have more renewables it it generation mix going forward. That's the fact and it didn't change one bit under the past 4 years under Republicans and this event won't change it either. The fact is that renewables are in the mix going forward at greater percentages... They are just "goals" so its not that the projections will come to reality, but the momentum is set.

BTW ... focusing on generation is short sighted, you can almost give away the power because the business/profits/technology advancements are in transmission and distribution and going forward that will even be more prevalent in the business model.
During rhe Enron debacle in early 2000s my company curtailed operations paid us all to come to work or do community service projects and made serious bank selling the power to California. Lol best job ever, we overhauled updated and eventually ran out of projects in the couple years it lasted.

Solar ”Pans Out” pretty much anywhere the sun shines to some extent... Would I rely on it for electric heat in Montana...No. But it sure as hell can heat a pool in Texas.

Spoken by someone who is obviously not in the solar industry (hint...I am). Much of texas it DOES NOT pan out for 3 reasons. 1. Buyback/Net Metering is either 1 cent or non-existent. The areas that have good net metering have a lot of solar. 2. HAIL...we do a lot of insurance claims. 3. Power is too cheap in many areas to make it have a reasonable ROI... a 20 year ROI is not reasonable...I like 8 years or less. 10, maybe 12 if you have garbage credit and we are having to pay finance fees for a lender. Under $0.115 per kWh it gets hard to make worth it.

It has nothing to do whether it can "heat a pool" (btw you would not use PV for that...you would use solar water collectors..but im sure you know that right) etc...it has to do with cost vs benefit. We are a fossil fuel state..thats our best resource..and what we should be using...regardless of what your child molester king in the whitehouse tells you.

How many "100 Year" weather events have we had in the last few years?

Pro Tip: This type of thing is NOT going away by relying on the same thinking that got us here in the first place.

So you are saying that relying on wind and solar for power without enough fossil fuel generation to backfill demand is dumb? Thank you.

You mean the trading of a robust grid full of redundancy for a lean grid with overreliance on wind? Ya, i can behind your statement on that

My phone went kinda crazy today... we do A LOT of rural aka ag solar projects... Ive had more referral calls in 24 hours than we get in a month. IF they are hard up for fresh water PM me..ill do the same run I did today for dilligaf's BIL tomorrow to them.
Appreciate it! They have some great neighbors and are looking out for them, one thing i miss about Texas. Hospitality.

I agree we shouldn't rely on what got us here in the first place.
1: 10-12 hours of bright uninterrupted sunlight day after day is not guaranteed.

2: Moderate wind day after day is not guaranteed.

Actually answer my question/questions

EDIT: To answer your question on how many 100 year storms we have had in the last few years? Well I can tell you we don't have to worry about it for about 100 years now😉

Just build a nuke plant and be done with it. We'll drop the waste on China's doorstep.

And in the winter it's even less where he is at.
I'm about 2* north and just got back to 8ish hours a day a couple weeks ago if the sun comes out ,which is hit or miss this time of year.

What a dick

Just channeling the thoughts of a native Texan...

Tim Boyd, the mayor of Colorado City, Texas, put on Facebook: “The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout!... If you are sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are sitting there waiting for someone to come rescue you because your lazy is direct result of your raising! [sic]…. This is sadly a product of a socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW will work and others will become dependent for handouts…. I’ll be damned if I’m going to provide for anyone that is capable of doing it themselves!... Bottom line quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family!” “Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish [sic],” he said.

Born and raised in Tx. Tx will bounce back. Stronger and better than most.

I personally don’t care that Ted Cruz went to Cancun. Good for him. He’s not a lineman, electrician or plumber. So he’s not needed here rt now. I bet half the state would have ran off to Cancun if they could have.

I agree with you that he couldn't do anything to help personally but getting up and leaving the state is a pussy move to be honest. just my opinion. If it was a Dem senator, this place would be on fire bashing them.

Ok @squeezer it's obvious you are having trouble but that's expected since you're a democrat.

You eluded in an earlier post that we need to shutdown natural gas power plants (to be fair you included coal in that), basically stating that natural gas is bad. When I asked you what is wrong with natural gas you realized you fucked up and eluded the actual question.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with natural gas, as a matter of fact both the democrat and the Republican parties embrace it, so much so that they are converting their entire city fleets to CNG (Clean Natural Gas, incase you didn't know). One of the most liberal cities in the nation has the largest CNG fleet in the nation, that would be Los Angeles City and they have added an incredible amount to that fleet in the last 12 months. The state of California is doing the same with their fleet including school districts.

Now before you say "I only meant the coal power plants" no you didn't or you would have corrected yourself right away. Natural gas power plants should be the primary source of power generation since it's more consistent.

Here is a pic of an LA City Metro bus with key elements circled.

Go spew your liberal bullshit in here with like minded morons, you'll fit right in😉

He posted that afterwards trying to justify being a dick. People are dying and he is making fun of the situation. How low can you go?

Early on I laughed about something my sister said (lives in TX) but that was before anybody really knew how serious it is. I took down my comment.

This isn’t good...

From the article:
Jared Tennant is one of the best-known aerial photographers in central Texas. I got to know his work through the Austin Drone Pilots group on Facebook a few years back.

The Austinite, whose home also lost power during the rolling and extended blackouts, noticed the lights stayed on Monday night. Tuesday night he flew his drone downtown to capture the following stunning images. They show municipal buildings, empty office buildings, and even empty parking garages fully lit throughout the night. All of the following images belong to Jared Tennant and are used with his permission.

Seeing that we went five days without power this last week and have friends staying with us because they are still dark means I am living through this struggle.

It took 4 hours of no furnace and freezing temps to prompt the following response:

(Immediate)

Water shut off to hose bibs.
Woodstove lit and heating one side of the house.
Gas fireplace heating the other side.

(Within 8 hours)

Generator purchased
Isolation panel roughed in

I didn’t sit on my ass and blame windmills for the situation.

Further

The boat was winterized months ago including 50 gallons of non-ethanol fuel... This is important because all the gas stations around were shut down. Many of the people around with generators ran out of fuel day two. We did not.

Thats the beauty of RDP, you get to bask in the vast knowledge of its members without even asking...

And for the record my posts on this Texas fiasco are clearly aimed at the mindless assholes who decided that the most important thing to do was bash windpower instead of the actual root cause of the problem.

Turning this into a debate about Wind/Solar Vs Combustion Sources is exactly what the people who caused the problem want you to do. The fact that it is happening in the proudly independent state of Texas is irony piled on top of tragedy.

An elected Mayor of a town in Texas felt it was OK to make the statement he made is ... Fuck, I dont even know what it is. Throw the Fly'N Ted twist in there and all I can do is sit back and wonder what the fuck is wrong with conservatives.

Am I acting like an ass... Sure, but take a look at my posts on this and tell me how they differ from mainline conservative propaganda.

Just channeling my inner Rush Limbaugh

While we have not uncovered any audio of these segments, we did find a few contemporaneous news articles and comments from Limbaugh confirming the contents of these controversial segments.
Iowa’s Cedar Gazette reported in 1990 that Limbaugh’s “AIDS Update,” a recurring segment in which he made jokes about a disease that had killed more than 100,000 people in the United States the previous decade, started by playing songs such as “Back in the Saddle Again,” “Kiss Him Goodbye,” “I Know I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” and “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places.”

Folks are not-surprisingly up in arms...uber wealthy Highland Park and Preston Hollow neighborhoods in Dallas never lost power, while surrounding areas did.

For the record, George W. has an estate in Preston Hollow, though he doesn’t live there full time as I understand it.

We’ll see how it plays out...

Let me get this straight, you make a blanket statement saying that Texans can’t take care of them selves and your gods gift to survival. You get called out for it and now it’s “this isn’t the thread you’re looking for”.
