And WTF is up with the lack of tv coverage? Biggest race of the year and FOX has nothing until today.

I had planned on it but won’t make it.
Was Britt trying to strategically qualify to match up with Torrence in round 1?
She didn’t pull it off, but at #13 it sure seems like it.

We were there yesterday. Yes it was hot but it was a great turn out.

That’s great to hear, I haven’t been since 2018 I think, I was really disappointed by the turnout when I went. It bums me to think nhra might end up like the sprint boat racing some day.

I was there yesterday too, I didnt bother taking any pictures. It was warm which was sort of annoying considering its usually much cooler. The turn out was pretty low in my opinion, heck the GA stands on the far side were totally empty all day so they must have just shut that down. I did hear they limited ticket sales to appease LA County, but when the Nitro classes would come up and everyone came into the stands, they might have looked half full. All other times it was pretty bare in the stands but in the pits there were a bunch of folks walking around.

It seemed like corners were being cut to save money. I ran into some guys in the stands complaining the TEC was weak this year. Also they normally run two of those "Sunoco Vision" displays (one up at the start and one at the end of the GA stands), but this year they only had one up at the start line.

Dont get me wrong, it was great to get out there, sniff some nitro and race gas and enjoy the sights and sounds of live passes, like it always has been. It was just different this year, probably because they had to make adjustments to appease the County to allow them to run.

I miss the old Larry Huff commercials for the NHRA events -
Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! See Don “The Snake” Prudhome take on Don Garlits in his Swamp Rat 4!
Don’t miss all the action at the NHRA Winter Nationals in Pomona this weekend!

Today's finals looks more like a Thursday qualifying session from back in the day...

I’m surprised they got to run there at all.
Last year was a fucking joke with what? 6 or 8 events run at 2 different tracks?
That after the last real event at Phoenix was totally sold out.
For NHRA to rebound to even this level was an accomplishment.
I hope next year this limited attendance foolishness is over.
The fields themselves should be more diverse and open than they have in years.
Everyone screamed for less mega teams and more balanced fields and we should see that for sure!
I’m excited about the future of NHRA.

I live in La Verne and the libbies have been going nuts on nextdoor all weekend with the noise. Amazing how people complain about things that have been going on long before they moved here.

I’m sure more petitions are coming.

People are seriously morons…. I was really hoping COVID was IQ targeted and would wipe out half the population. One can dream

My mistake, it was Jan C. Gabriel who made those famous Sunday, Sunday, Sunday promos.

I think Doug Kalitta (and likely all the other Kalitta teams as well)is going to have a good season next year.

I am curious to see what changes are going to be made with some of the teams, other than what has already been published. Salinas hinted. Talk about Kalitta making changes.

Alan Johnson to Kalitta has been confirmed. Most of the Salinas crew is going but some are not because they don't want to move to Michigan.

Sadly I believe that Pomona's days are numbered. Fan attendance has been shrinking for years. Southern California's motorsport culture has either gotten old and died, too old to attend, or has bailed out of the state all together. If the recent increase and I mean massive increase in fans at Firebird Raceway in Idaho is any indication, the fans have definitely moved outta So. Cal.

The NHRA is packing up their headquarters in Glendora and relocating to Indianapolis. The NHRA hasn't put any effort into marketing the Pomona races in years. The parking lot at the Fairplex is falling apart and the drag strip is in need of some serious attention. The cost of tickets, parking and concessions at Pomona, let alone $5.00 a gallon for gas is not helping the attendance either.

Then there's LA County. It's been rumored for years that the Fairplex is being sold. With everything going on in LA County and California in general, I can't imagine there will be many more races down Parker Avenue. I will definitely be making it down to the Winternationals in 2022, as I fear it may be the last. I've been going to Pomona religiously for 40 years and that place is like home. I hope I'm wrong about it's demise, but the writing is on the wall.

I fear NHRA may be gone completely in a few years. There doesn't seem to be as much national interest. If you take away Schumacher and Force a bunch of cars are gone. They didn't run in Seattle this year, don't know why. Having seen both circle and drag tracks closing every year it doesn't look good. NHRA didn't run in Spokane but we had a great road course, drag and circle track here. It has been closed for at least a year. The Casino bought the property. Hopefully they will have interest in racing or it will be gone too.

The NHRA hasn't ran at Seattle the past two seasons because of Covid restrictions in the county. Hope they go back someday.

I think next season is going to be awesome. With DSR disbanding for the most part, several smaller, but hardcore teams have been formed. Tony Stewart Racing with Leah in TF and Hagan in FC. Antron Brown Racing in TF with Antron and teaming up with Justin Ashley. Ron Capps forming his own team. Tony Schumacher coming back to TF. Cruz Pedregon with a good team finally. John Force likely bringing back Austin Prock in either TF or FC. And John possibly running a farewell tour. Toyota making moves and already introduced the all new Supra body. Lots of cool changes coming in the next few weeks.

It’s kind of funny.
People bang on NHRA for not evolving, then bang on them when they do make changes.
A few years ago many bitched about the mega teams. Now they are shrinking fast and branching into their own teams and thats bad too?
Lol
The attendance this year is not an accurate yardstick. Covid wrecked everything.
Pomona is in question due to CA and the county. Some tracks are not user friendly.
I’ve been to Seattle a bunch over the years and swore I would never go back because it’s a pain in the ass having a beer there. You had to go into the beer section, couldn’t do this, could do that, etc. that’s not NHRA rules that’s local rules.
Same in Houston I think if memory serves?
A year and a half ago Phoenix was 100% sold out (that was the last normal race before the covid insanity began)
Tracks without restrictions always have better attendance. NHRA doesn’t have control over local ordinances.

Next year there will be a slew of new teams with old faces. Brown and his new team, Alexis is kicking ass and I expect that to continue.
Force is down to 3 cars total, maybe 2 next year. DSR will basically be gone with Hagan and Leah going to Stewart’s start up team.
It’s very exciting.
The most dominant team in fuel is a one car team with one part timer. (Plus a bunch of franchise cars for data)
NHRA isn’t going anywhere. and positive changes are being made.

Is Capps doing his own thing next season?

My rants...I mind you I have been going to Pomona twice a year for 15 years.

1. No jumbo tron at the top end. And the one at the start was facing across the track so nothing could be seen from 100 feet on down if you were in GA or standing on the fence.

2. Cashless, but of course you can tip so that throws away their covid bullshit.

3. $15 beers is just dumb so we went to the car in between after paying $30 for "pit side" parking

4. No opening ceremonies what so ever. No fly over, nothing.

5. Traffic sucked, worse then normal cause you had to use your card for parking.

Was there not a flyover? We saw a black jet headed that direction from my sons baseball game. We know it wasn’t gonna land at the local airport.

If that was their version of a flyover it was weak. He ran the flight path of the airport, pretty slow then disappeared. Normally they come from the mountains and run the strip, whatever they are.

On a positive note, the gals “checking” bags at the entrance were so lazy you could bring in as much booze as you could pack in yore wife’s purse.
The big screen was lame at the starting line, I guess 2 is a bridge too far. And all this cashless bullshit sucks.
But, it was nice with less people.

I live in La Verne and the libbies have been going nuts on nextdoor all weekend with the noise. Amazing how people complain about things that have been going on long before they moved here.

I’m sure more petitions are coming.

Yeah they've been screaming for years. Its the same set of gene-pool deficiency that moves to airport neighborhoods and screams about the noise. To them (not you) I say "Go Fuck Yourself, the Drags were here first. You dont like the noise, sell and move, dont make everyone else change for you."

These people seriously wouldnt be happy no matter what you do. Drive the drags away, close the fairgrounds and turn it all into more housing and then they'd scream about the traffic increase or something else. Oy vey.

I’ll take the small time racers like Dale Creasy from Illinois. He’s no Arnie Beswick but he’s a great independent racer.

Dang ,
You all make me not want to go .
Go, it’s not as gloomy as they say.
I’ve been going to National events for over 40 years. Been to at least 60 or more events.
I’ve never noticed the shit that the complainers complain about.
I like the races more than I dislike expensive beer and parking.
In fact, those things are really part of the experience...lol
In a normal year I’ll go to at least 2 events. Deb and I would fly all over the country to go when ever I had days off. We did other things too, but it was not unusual to jump on a plane to Houston for 3 days for the races. (That’s how I met old Texan!) Or to Vegas (bench racer get togethers) or the normal Sears Point and Pomona races.
Haters are prone to cite declining attendance and a whole slew of things they joyfully show as the decline of what amounts to the greatest spectacle on wheels. Why? I’ll never know. Most of the time I’ve been the races are full or nearly full.
I like local races too. I’ll bet Ive spent more time at divisional races and run what you brung races than most haters.
I can’t stand street outlaws. Lol
Anyway, take a fistful of cash (or in CA your Credit card of choice...apparently covid knows the difference...lol) and enjoy the show. It’s like nothing else on earth.

At Pomona the NHRA managed to have the finals IN SPITE of the CA idiocrosy...but the haters will only blame the NHRA for all things they don’t like.
