Just got back from 5 days in Lake Tahoe, north and west shores. Drive was almost 800 miles each way, took the truck and the Suburban with friends in it. My uncle in law and his wife and kids live in Tahoe City, CA near a private beach in an HOA with it's own pier an buoy field so that made things easy with mooring the boat as it's almost impossible to find a slip or mooring ball otherwise. He has a Cobalt R5 Surf and we've got the Hallett of course so we got to exchange booze cruises and did a little wake surfing as well. Only down side is everything in Tahoe is expensive, rum runners are $16 everywhere you go, 91 on the water is $9.89 a gallon and Diesel in town is $6.89 a gallon. Parking is hard to find but you can park your truck and trailer on the street for up to 72 hours for free if you can find a spot or otherwise spend $300 a night to park at Homewood ski resort. Water was down about 6' so we had to launch at Obexers Boat Company as opposed to the north Tahoe marina ramp, the cave rock ramp or the lake forest ramp which was a cluster fuck. We left last Sunday and there was a huge fire south of Carson city that covered the entire valley in smoke and it was hard to even see the lake on our way out.

Before you launch you need to have a boat inspection done at one of 3 places and we chose the spooner location at the corner of the US-50 and the NV-28. That was $145 and is good for 7 days.

To give some perspective, my aunt in law is a realtor in Tahoe City and she says that some buoys that come with the houses on the lake can be sold separately or add value of up to $1,000,000. One 24' slip at the yacht club marina in Tahoe city just sold for $650,000. If you want a bouy for the season only, those can go for $15,000 from April to September.

Here are some pics:

We went to tahoe for the first time on our honeymoon last year, and man did I fall in love with that place. So relaxing, especially during shoulder season.

Great pics!

Great pics and post. I'm curious on your thoughts on the Cobalt Surf. Mine is the R7 so 2 feet longer and we really enjoy the added cockpit space.

Let me know when you're ready to trade for the Hallett. Such a beautiful boat.

My UIL’s 2019 R5 Surf is sweet. Well made, nice riding boat. It’s got 3 ballast tanks and if you like to wake surf or just booze cruise it’s good for those two things. I’m sure tubes and skis would be great as well. We fit 10 comfortably and cruised around when not full of water at 30MPH at 4,000RPM. It has the Volvo Penta 380HP engine and it seems to do well even at 6,500ft elevation. It’s too slow to be my only boat but I wouldn’t mind it as a second boat for water sports as I’m sure the kids would love it growing up. As a comparison, we did some early morning and late evening speed runs with 3/8 of a tank and 5 adults and got my boat to 93MPH at 5,100RPM with the 32 Maximus props I use at sea level on it. Never had a problem coming on plane or maintaining a decent cruise between 55-65MPH either. We lapped the entire lake Saturday morning running between 65-75MPH and it took right at an hour.

Another thing I noticed both on last year's trip as well as this one, EVERYONE has a Cobalt, a Formula or a wakeboat. We saw a few old woodies, a couple of smaller performance boats like a 21 Warlock and a 23 Cobra I believe as well as a pink Hallett 270-S.

The one boat I didn't get a pic of but we saw hauling ass Saturday morning was the 37 Talon Gone Again. His painted to match truck and trailer were sitting behind a water side house in North Tahoe City which we passed daily on our way back to the VRBO in Tahoe Vista.

As to your first line, I filled the boat up with 91 at Costco near my house for $4.79/gallon. Used nearly the entire tank in the 2 days we used the boat but didn't have to fill in Tahoe. Truck itself I had to fill 6 times in the trip and probably 4 times for the Suburban. Fuel bill for both vehicles and the boat was around $2,200 total for the 5 days.

Looks nice.

What were they inspecting for $145?
Quagga Mussles. If you tell them you have been on a Colorado River body of water in the last 90 days, which I have been, they automatically make you run your motor/motors on 140 degree water for 5 minutes to kill any mussels in the cooling system. They then soak all of your life vests, ropes, fenders and anything else on your boat that touches water in that same 140 degree water for 5-10 minutes. After that, they fill your bilge with 140 degree water and then dump it out through the bilge plug to kill anything in there. The whole thing took about an hour and 15 minutes.

Not sure I'm following your logic ?
According to USDA testing, 140 degrees kills any quagga or zebra mussel juveniles and larvae within seconds of contact. This pre-heated water then disinfects the raw water cooling side of your engine and exhaust system. Closed or open system doesn't seem relative as you're only trying to disinfect any raw water passages.

Bullshit as it has always been. They can grow all over the hull, and drives. They will not grow in the sea strainers, blocks, heat exchangers, headers, exhaust manifolds etc.

Doesn't happen.

Oh I see, you're disputing the need to flush the cooling system because you don't believe any residual water can harbor any juvies or larvae. Well I admit to not having examined any under a microscope, so you may be right or ??
I've not read of problems relating to these mussels in the parts of the systems that attain the higher temps, blocks, heat exchangers, exhaust etc.

However, Sea Strainer infestation by larvae, juvies and even adults, has been sited as being rather common.

This is a quote from an a 2018 article about the mussel problem with boats in Lake Powell --- " AIS Inspection personnel were surprised to find adult mussels in the sea strainers of boats that had been on Lake Powell " There's numerous other articles that also mention sea strainers as well as the cold side of the raw water pick up and piping.

Again, no expert but that seems quite logical to me.

AIS inspection personnel haha.

The ones that check for the sticker we pay, for the revenue that does absolutely nothing for any of the Colorado lakes? Give us your money yearly and we will magically rid all of the lakes of this invasive species.

I agree they can possibly grow in some of the boats that stay in the marina and are never operated. There are plenty which are disgusting and easily verified.

Boats like the OP's which we were the previous owner's of are spotless compared to some of the crap out there.

The guys even got on their backs and check inside my low water pickups with a flashlight. I asked them if there were any mussels in the lake and they said absolutely not. I find that hard to believe.
