While I was in Hawaii (Oahu), a guy commented on my RDP shirt. Actually 3 different people commented on RDP gear. One newer member with a 28 Laser, one had lived in Havasu and knew what RDP is, and a Lurker.

Anyways, he is a real cool guy. Lives in SoCal. We chatted almost every day I was there. I won't say anything more about him to give him away...we will just see if he joins. If he doesn't join, RD is going to demote me in the NorCal recruiting office.

Let's give a a big welcome to...

Welll letโ€™s get some Hawaiian boating content in at least
Pic is my 19yo cousin. Family will fish out from Haleโ€™iwa harbor to Kauai. Not sure where they dock there. Itโ€™s roughly 85-100 miles.
Fishing on the way thereโ€”and all fish is sold to local markets/restaurants to help cover gas/etc. they spend a few days there visiting family and then fish the way back. Fish caught on the way home is kept.
They usually try and only fish for Mahi and Aku both ways so they donโ€™t end up in a couple hour fight with a larger sea monster.

They must be a pretty "salty" lot. ๐Ÿ˜
I've only fished the big island on the lee side, but read and heard stories about some pretty nasty seas building up in those passages between the islands. I know standing on a beach on Lanai one day, looking across at Molokai, there were some seriously nasty looking wind waves. One vessel we could see heading into the wind and waves was almost constantly obliterated with walls of spray.
I know a couple of skippers I fished with mentioned only traveling with groups when they'd make the transit for tournaments on another island.

There have been easy and more difficult crossings. But never go if it would be dangerous. Always willing to turn back if it does not look right too.
Weather is always the determining factor with a trip like this.
Wind, humidity, tidal moons, season, etc..
Thats why the return trip is a few days to a week later--allows time with family and for wind/currents to shift in favor of a return.
Uncle has done trips like this ever since i was a kid there with very few aborted crosses.
Worst trip Ive been on involved a fouled driveshaft (abandoned fish net) causing a motor to overheat about 30 miles offshore of Oahu. We could barely see the Island and drifting south pretty quick. Free dove in 3 mile deep water to cut and clear net--that was 25ish years ago, still get chickenskin thinking about that. . .

When we go on our travels almost everywhere we go I run into a lurker or two. When we went to Bonelli Park over New Years I met three guys that watch all the videos etc.. and knew more about rdp them most of the members would.

This last motorhome vacation we went on, we ran into quite a few people that commented either on my shirt or my hat etc. When we pulled into the mammoth RV camp, the guy saw the back of the motorhome and said "You guys must be from Havasu?"

That is what the guy said to me at Pearl Harbor. I said, why? Because of the hat? He said yes.

He wasn't on RDP, or even a lurker. He just knew what RDP is from living in Havasu for 30 years. He moved to Texas a few years ago.

One guy at the airport said "I like your shirt" (it was the Coors Light logo looking RDP shirt). I said thanks, it's a boat website and not a Coors Light shirt. He said "I know exactly what it is. I'm totally addicted to RDP". He said he was a new member, and didn't post much. Once again, his name is Laser something. He has a Laser boat like McRib.

When I was stationed on Oahu. We would fish the Molokai express a couple times a year. Some really rough water but always caught a lot of fish.

Iโ€™d guess thereโ€™s more lurkers than youโ€™d think lol. I need to get him a new one but my cousin had an rdsux sticker on his boat till it got refinished.

Bonus points for guessing the neighborhood Iโ€™m in..spent over half my life on this hill lol

I told the guy I would start a thread on Monday (yesterday) about him, and he could decide if he wanted to reply to it. I guess he decided not to.
