The first RDP Catalina trip is in full effect!

Itinerary as follows:

Sunday morning, those that are boating over shall meet at the Huntington Beach launch ramp at 10:00 am sharp. If anyone prefers to launch from Newport, Long Beach or elsewhere and wishes to join the group for the crossing, meet at the entrance of the Huntington Beach Harbor entrance, no later than 10:30 am. The group shall cross the open ocean and arrive at Avalon Harbor, Catalina. Arrival should be somewhere around 11:30 or so (depending on delays).

Upon arrival, use your VHF radio to hale the harbor master on channel 12 or call via cell phone 310-510-0535. Mooring spots are issued first come, first serve. July is the busy season, however there should be ample room. If you are planning on spending the night, be sure to inform the Harbor
Master once he arrives. If there is insufficient room inside Avalon Bay, you may be required to moor outside at Descanso Bay (just off of the famous Catalina Casino). Once issued a mooring can, and secured, telephone the water taxi at 310-510-0409.

If there is absolutely no mooring around the Avalon area, we can moor at Two harbors and take the ferry from Two Harbors to Avalon (Catalina Ferries offers ferry rides from Avalon to Two Harbors and back. They charge $22 one way, $19.50 for seniors and $17 for kids. Call 310-305-7250.) I don?t foresee problems but as they say; Victory loves preparation!

More info on mooring here: http://www.cityofavalon.com/filestorage/2542/2566/2572/Brochure_July_2008.pdf

Once on island, our group will make their way to the infamous Descanso Beach Club. Just past the Casino, it's a small beach area with swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. Lounging is also a favorite "activity." With a drink menu posted on a palm tree, a waitress will gladly bring you your
favorite cocktail which may include the famous ?buffalo milks? or the "Descanso Destroyer" (heavy on the rum, especially the 151 floater, $7) out to a spot on the beach, the place is straight out of a Caribbean outpost. There are bands most Sundays which attracts big crowds. It?s an easy enough walk, but there?s also taxi carts that will assist you over.

After enjoying the good company of like-minded individuals while sipping copious amounts of libations and snacking on tasty treats for a few hours, those of you that choose to return to the mainland must depart before the seas kick up and the sun sets low on the horizon. For those of
us staying, say farewell to your fellow RDP?rs that couldn?t commit to the overnighter. Be sure to explain to them that they will for sure be missing one epic adventure! After saying our good-byes, those that are staying the night should make their way to their hotel of choice, to check in, freshen up and prepare for dinner.

The group dinner will be held at Armstrong?s Seafood restaurant http://
www.armstrongseafood.com/ at 6:30 pm

After dinner, the RDP group can stumble over to the infamous Luau Larry's http:// www.luaularrys.com/ where the persistent punishment of our livers will continue!

We shall enjoy each other?s company into the wee hours of the night and hopefully find our way back to our hotels in one piece.

Monday morning, be sure to grab a quick bite to eat and saddle up. It is usually wise to head back to the mainland before noon to avoid the winds and swell that routinely kick up in the late afternoon.

Hotel recommendations:

Rentals 310-510-1456

If you do not wish to boat over, you have two options?.

Option 1) (which I happen to personally love) is the Island Express Helicopter service. Be advised,
scheduling is specific so plan your day!
http://www.islandexpress.com/

Option 2) one of the various ferries across such as the Catalina Express

Again, I would not recommend missing the beginning to what will surely be an annual event.

Hope to see everyone there!

It will certainly be a great time! Rumor has it there will be plenty of boats running across. Weather you plan on bringing a boat or just riding the farry or helicopter over, you should plan on making it. Put some names to faces and enjoy the environment - Sun soked beaches, water front bars, good food and good people!

Just a reminder, the Catalina Ski Race is the day before so if you please, you can make a whole weekend out of it. Grab a hotel in Long Beach after the ski race and run over to Catalina Sunday. Good times.

Pics of people/boats attending?

I haven't really taken names / boats yet, but these are who I'm pretty sure is going so far.

Strut Marine - 47 Outerlimits
38 Donzi
36 Cigarette

Schiada - 43 Schiada
32 Schiada?

OCMerrill - 39 Ocean Cat
Insert your name here..

I would expect this list to grow pretty quickly here pretty soon as a lot of people are already talking about it..

I got that... used to share ramp space with them. Turbine helicopters run at a flat rate, but if they are light on pax, might be able to talk John Moore in to an RDP rate.

Rowing thru the moorings at Avalon in a Zodiac, with cocktail in hand, as the sun goes down, town chimes sounding, "swim step hopping" among the other moored yachts, is one of our most favorite experiences in this world. Big boats do best. Be Safe . . . It is an unforgetable experience. Enjoy !

This should be a fun trip. I'm not bringing my boat for the ski race this year, otherwise I'd see if I could make this one. I know a lot of the race participants like to go to the island the day after the race, so it should be fun.

Be sure to stop by the Marlin Club for drinks. Great place with cheap drinks a a good bartender if he's still there.

I am going to be out to watch the races on Saturday so I am not sure if I just go ahead or meet up with all you guys in Huntington Harbor.

Team Ragamuffin
24 Pantera - Lil Muffin
32 Skater - Ragamuffin

Pretty sure the Lavey Boys are coming out in the 39. Talked to Ray about it over the weekend, and he said they'd most likely be there. :)

Are they going to have a rum run this year? I keep hearing varying stories..

Not sure how that will affect us leaving the harbor to head to the island.

I'm there for the weekend at LB for the ski races with WW. The Helo ride doesn't look bad but I doubt i'll go to Catalina.

If my wife and I go it looks like we will have the smallest boat, 23' open bow. I have never made the trip before and don't want to hold up the big boats. Should I just take the ferry or the heli over or will there be some slower going boats like mine?

I would suggest monitoring the offshore swell reports and then make a gametime decision. If you do decide to cross, try to buddy up with someone and keep an eye on each other.

We had a 21' Lavey join us one year for our Fun Run... They did great!

I'll wait to see how it goes.

The last time I put in the ocean HH and KROOZIN said I could follow them to LB. I knew HH had a big boat and didn't want to slow him down but he said they were taking a fishing boat so it would not be a problem. Well that fishing boat was a bit more than I expected. I instantly had boat envy when I saw KROOZINS fishing boat....a Midnight Express with three big ass outboards hanging off the back. NICE!

We used to run our 24' Baja over all the time from marina del Rey and long beach. Like laveyone said, Just check what the swells will be like for the day and you'll be fine. It always seems when you get a big group of boats going over they spread out... Some run fast, some run slow but 99% of the time people don't wait. But even if some don't wait, you'll be fine. Just get the heading for Avalon and keep her on course!:D;)

Seems like a late start....

Isn't the water typically better in the early AM?

I seem to remember the swell getting pretty big eveytime I have headed back.

If the water's going to get ugly, it usually will be after noon. If it's calm at 8 it'll be calm at 11 9 times out of 10 but after noon, if the wind starts to whip, it gets bumpy. There's times when I"ve gone over in glass at 10 and couldn't come home at 2 because the 6' swell and wind chop. Bottom line, if you're going to "day trip", I would watch the weather report very close and if it hints of being rough, I'd take the catalina flyer, get a ride with someone or get the helicopter over. Otherwise, just spend the night.

What he said...
The smallest I have taken over was a 21' Center console fisher type deal and that did ok but we got a little wet on the way back ;)
My dad used to take his boats to Avalon all the time. He has more crossings in a 15' (I think it was a Glaspar??) than I do in all my boats put together. Hell the largest vessel he ever owned was a 17' Glaspar and that went over several times.
NOTE: there was more than one occasion where a day trip turned into an overnighter when he decided it was too damn big to come home.
