    19 Daytona

This is putting my memory into the overload mode, but I think the "Gambler" was owned/driven by Joe Podeski.

Boating the distant past (40 years and older)

I believe this was the same year that Wiley Poole (son of Trailer Boats magazine owner/publisher Ralph Poole) was entered in the race as well. I'd have to check but I think he might have been driving an Eliminator.

    Fastest Single Engine Boat???

Olson's 33 Daytona went 192 mph at Loto with GT blower motors about 10 years ago. I also recall he ran high 180s at Havasu a year or two later.

    Housekeeper

We've had Molly Maid for about a year. Single story house, about 2300 sq. ft. -- 4 bedrooms and 3 baths. First cleaning was $400 -- then cleaning once a month is $280. It's a 3-lady crew (always the same 3) and it takes them approximately 2.5 hours start to finish. Very punctual, they bring...

    2024 LA Boat Show

I believe Conquest/Group 1 Marine is still around in Havasu -- and so is Cheetah as far as I know -- and I think Nordic is still building Halletts and Eliminator will do a new Stoker if asked. Pretty obvious though, a majority of the performance builders just aren't doing boat shows. And what's...

    2024 LA Boat Show

My.......how things have changed in the last 25 to 30 years. The L.A. Boat Show would always have between 23 to 24 different performance/California style boat brands on display.

Boating the distant past (40 years and older)

This "Hot Boat of the Month" feature I did brings back a lot of memories -- When I first met Jeff Blosdale, he was a mobile marine mechanic working Marina del Rey and Redondo Beach (King Harbor). He built my offshore race boat at least 6 or 7 engines over a five year span and they were 'killer'...

Boating the distant past (40 years and older)

Mark Spencer was a lifesaver (excellent writer and great photographer). I hired him on a part-time basis when he was just starting Pepperdine University as a journalist and photography major. Glad he was around to take over my spot when I left Powerboat in April 1979.

Boating the distant past (40 years and older)

Hi Jerry: thanks for the compliments -- those were fun (and very busy) years. I hit my breaking point in the first quarter of 1979 -- in order to make print deadlines for January and February '79 issues, I had to write almost 50 boat tests in 46 days (no time off for Thanksgiving, Christmas or...

Boating the distant past (40 years and older)

There were actually two unlimiteds that put on an exhibition at the Irvine Lake NDBA drags on that day -- the "Atlas Van Lines" and Bob Patterson's U-80. I was in charge of event coordination and promotion/advertising for Irvine races back then and my idea to have an Unlimited Hyrdo special...

Boating the distant past (40 years and older)

Jerry....you're killing me with this walk down memory lane. I vividly remember nearly all of these examples. The girl "skiing" in the red bikini in the Harmanized ad is Dawn Clark -- I used her a number of times for Powerboat merchandise ads when I was editor at the magazine. She also went to...

    2024 LA Boat Show

Where did you guys see April 2024 dates for the Bart Hall/L.A. Boat Show in Pomona (Fairplex)? On the boat show website it shows March 1-3, 2024.

Fire at the Tustin blimp hangers

A little known (and long forgotten) fact about the Tustin hangars and boating. It was in 2003 and 2004 and the Southern Californnia Marine Association (SCMA) was interested in finding optional locations for the annual Orange County Boat Show (the Anaheim Convention Center was playing hardball on...

The Quick Way from San Francisco to SoCal -- by Boat

Sorry -- my mistake, the official time from SF to MDR was 4 hours and 55 minutes (not 55 seconds). That makes their average speed for the final 38 miles (23 minutes) of the course to Long Beach to be approximately 88 mph.

The Quick Way from San Francisco to SoCal -- by Boat

That is the boat -- average speed for the 400 plus mile trip was just over 85 mph. Pretty incredible. Water conditions were good to excellent. Mostly overcast skies and only light fog. They started with 700 gallons of fuel onboard -- it was a non-stop run. The event did stream live online. This...

The Quick Way from San Francisco to SoCal -- by Boat

Although pretty much under the radar, yesterday new offshore world endurance speed records were broken. The "Patrotic Duty Team" of Tony Adams, Steve Seaton and Allen Bellinghausen set new speed marks for San Francisco to Marina del Rey (over 420 miles in 4 hours and 55 minutes) and then...

    Old School Tahiti Boats Brochure

My persoanl boat was a 16' Tahiti jet (Berkeley) purchased in late 1964 -- it was a black hull and bottom with gold metalflake deck. I ran that boat in the 1966 Catalina Ski Race -- 2nd place in the Women's Open class.
