So I have an opportunity to pick up this ‘57 Ford F-350 flatbed for nothing. 272 Y-block with a 4 speed. It’s been sitting at a good friends property in the desert for quite a while and now they want it gone. Supposedly ran when parked. I’m not scared of a project and already have a few ideas going in my head. Just get it up and driving and use it for Home Depot runs? Maybe hang a Dana 60 in the front and convert it to 4X4? Cut the bed off and make it a ramp truck? Call me crazy but I like something different. You guys have any thoughts or ideas?

Awesome, I like the idea of just cleaning it up and getting it running for a home depot runner.
Seriously though, if you repower it I'll take the Y block out of it.

That's the idea I'm leaning towards for now. Going to do some research on what it'll take for a 4X4 conversion. I'll keep you posted on what I do with the engine. Let's just hope it'll run!

Drop cab on a newer chassis.
Add new flat bed sans liftgate.
Profit.
Interesting idea...maybe I'll start looking to see what I can find wrecked out there. Not sure what I'm going to do with that liftgate. It could be handy if I can get it working easily enough. Or just cut it off and scrap it

At least that way you have an easily serviceable vehicle that will ride better and you will get more use out of it.

I have a 202 transfer case. Same as a 205, but uses a driveshaft between transmission and tcase. Passenger side drop.

I bought an old 64 f250 earlier in the year for a weekend chores vehicle and to cruise around town. It’s body is completely rusted out but interior is nice and frame and mechanical systems are solid. it has the y block with 4 speed. Motor runs great for what I’m doing, havent put a dollar into it. Gets lots of looks.

defiantly grab that up... Buddy's 202 and newer 10.5/d60 out of 90's f350... maybe you could find one with idi or power smoke... youd have to mess with drive shafts , but nothing cool is ever easy...

That's an awesome looking truck. It looks to be a little rusty.....but far from being rusted out.
Did you change the rims/tires? I thought that truck would have had split rims?

It doesn't mate up, but rather a short drive shaft (jack shaft) to the input of the transfer case. 1350 ujoints, I believe.
Automatic, manual, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, International, it doesn't matter. Out of a 1963ish International ¾ ton 345 powered truck. I got them (2) on a package deal, with a T34 5-speed overdrive manual transmission (and other parts). I know they turn/rotate by hand, otherwise unknown condition. They do have gear oil in them.

I may have a donor truck for you. not dual rear wheels, but a service body and rack. 86 f250 4x4, carbd 460/c6 with a/c too.

Gotcha. So I'd have to build a crossmember to hold the transfer case and the short drive shaft. Doesn't seem to difficult

Wow! That's awesome! What's the story on your F250? Lemme get this big bitch home and check it out. Then I can make a game plan! Thanks!

I'd swap engine/trans/axles...so at least you get some modernish brakes. A light duty flatbed with a liftgate is about the most useful truck I could imagine owning.

Definitely a great idea...especially if I have that donor truck to swap parts with

The y blocks are great motors. Plenty of parts availability, and upgrades if wanted.

If the engine turns...I'd say it's in good enough shape to serve your purposes....wouldn't take much to get it running...but to source/sleeve/rebuild the wheel cylinders and find shoes that are worth a shit would be more effort than it's worth....Get some used 1 ton axles...I'd get a 4x4 front axle even if you're not ready to do that yet....just let 'er spin and make sure there's oil in it.

Popped the hood and removed the air cleaner. Nice funky smell hit my nostrils. Found a freshly dead rat by the distributor and a nice crispy one under that nest on the intake. Broke out the shop vac and started cleaning out the stinky rats nest on the intake and cleaning all the debris out of the cab

Here is my 1960 F100 292 Y-Block with T-98 Trans and Dana 24 transfer case. I love it but if I did all over again, I would find a modern chassis and running gear for a swap, finding parts for this old running gear is HELL!

If that is your definition of rusted out, you need to make a trip to the midwest. That is just light to mild surface rust. Rusted out you can see through. LOL

Brake parts for your old trucks/vehicles.......
I came across this company recently, C.H.Topping Co., in Long Beach Ca.. They specialize in brake systems, parts and conversions, for older vehicles, hotrods etc. They maybe a helpful resource for you guys, IDK. I found them while searching for the parking brake assembly for my dads motorhome utilizing the ford f53 chassis (f550). The parking brake parts and assembly for some of these older chassis's are almost obsolete.

Pulled the plugs this morning and squirt marvel mystery oil in the cylinders. Let it sit and then turned the engine by hand for a few revolutions. Felt nice and smooth. Hooked up a battery and cranked her over. Turned over nicely but had no spark. Took the cap off and the rotor wasn’t spinning while cranking the engine. Yanked the distributor to find the roll pin for the drive gear sheered and the distributor shaft pretty much frozen. Drive gear on the camshaft looks good. Time to order a distributor.

She’s a runner. Need to set the timing and tweak the carb. Do a valve adjustment. Need a fuel pump and some radiator hoses to keep her running for more than a minute

I’ve wondered about this myself, I think you have to have some kind of video service posting like YouTube or something but I don’t really know unfortunately I couldn’t see your video.😕
