Nice project, drove one similar to that when I was in my teens. One thing to consider when your deciding how to approach changing or spending money on the chassis. those wheels are split rims. No one with any brains will touch old wheels like that. It might be difficult to find non-split rims for that bolt pattern. Also the single system master cylinder isn't the safest thing to have. Those old Y blocks will run forever and sooo easy to work on. Good luck.
You bring up a good point on the wheels. I’ll did a bunch of online research trying to find out if they were split rims or not. These are seam welded and have big spot welds on the center. I’m led to believe they’re not. I had 6 tires mounted up with zero issues. And if I can update the master I plan on it. Not sure what’s out there for it though. Still focused on getting the engine running

Heads torqued and rocker shafts installed. Time for a beer. Tomorrow I’ll install the pushrods and adjust all the valves. I’m thinking of putting studs in for the exhaust manifolds...be way easier to install them

I’ve been trying to flush out the cooling system and block with an old school method. Putting granulated dishwasher detergent in the radiator and running it through a few heat cycles. Dump the water and repeat. Got a few cycles in and developed a leak at the t-stat bypass nipple on the water pump. Here’s the leak and old nipple...

im dumb for trying to reuse it. $12 and I had a new one delivered in 2 days.

And I think the used coil I’m running might be taking a shit. After about 20 minutes of running it starts to miss and wants to die. Hooked up an inline spark checker and it’s erratic and weak. The coil is hot to the touch. Thankfully I have a few more in my toolbox to verify!

The hot coil is definitely a giveaway. So cool to see it coming to life.

It makes a mess but works pretty good. Kinda scours the block and radiator.

And the bypass neck apparently 😁 ive never heard that trick either. Will be puting it in the memory bank

Points distributor? Ballast resistor? Ive seen the points and coil burn eachother out before when using higher powered coils on points.

Exactly! Couldn’t keep my hand on it for more than a few seconds. It’s one in my collection of old parts

Yes sir. Brand new distributor with new points. Coil is just a run of the mill 12 volt one. Good ballast resistor installed. The coil is “good”used stock I’ve had in my toolbox for years. It could’ve gone tits up? It was hot to the touch so I’ll try another “good” used one I have. I’ll order a new one just to be safe. Haha! I got cheap and it bit me in the ass.

So I got tired of chasing the ignition issue and ordered a Pertronix kit and coil for her. Got them installed today and she’s purring like a kitten. Flushed the radiator about 6 times and now she’s ready for some coolant. Next up is getting the brakes and clutch systems working again.

Brakes look good. Going to replace the wheel cylinders while I’m in there. Bled the brakes and a lot of rusty fluid came out of the front.

Do the brake hoses too and I would strongly suggest switching to a dual circuit master cylinder.
I’ll see what I’ve got when I get to work in the morning.

don’t buy new brake shoes...they’re kinda shitty these days. I’ve got a guy that can recline those with quality friction material if you need them.

Good idea on the hoses. They all look pretty dry rotten. A dual circuit master is a definite if I can get one. Let me know what you find bud! The shoes all look good with plenty of material. It did sit for 35 years in the Mojave desert though. Think the shoes are still good to run?

Yep...I would leave the shoes alone if they look good. I’ve got bearings too. I’ll price everything out tomorrow.

Took apart the front brakes and replaced the wheel cylinders and brake hoses. Flushed the hard brake lines. Next I’m going to clean the old grease off the spindle, clean and reinstall the brakes and reinstall the hub with new bearings

Is this one the same model in Winslow, AZ(Eagles song)? I love wrenching on old vehicles, they are so simple.
