Greaqualifying drama today, not like below deck drama! Jimmie Johnson about to swipe turn1 wall and didnt lift was prett impressive for the new guy there. Great job getting it into th fast 12. I think he was fastest 4 lap average yesterday just ahead of Dixon.

Dixon continues to show he is the best of his generation. Seven IndyCar championships (tied with A. J. Foyt), 2008 Indy 500 win, a record five Indy 500 poles (one more than Rick Mears), second at Indy four times, trails only A. J. Foyt (67) and Mario Andretti (51) in wins, and will tie Andretti with one more.

Arie made that run on the second day of qualifying, and in 1996 the run for the pole only counted on the first day. So while he still holds the record for the fastest four lap qualifying speed, Dixon's run today is a new four lap pole qualifying record speed.

Arie's chief mechanic has passed on, but the stories he told me of how they juiced the qualifying engine to get that speed were awesome. It was a four lap grenade, they just hoped it wouldn't blow before Arie took the checkers.
