So a friend calls me and says he is at an estate sale and there is a really old lathe bolted to a giant bench inside the garage for sale. He sent me a picture of it, and I told him to buy it and bring it straight to me. It’s 1940s vintage. It’s filthy dirty and I will be posting pics of my progress getting it running

If it wasnt for the extra parts in the yellow bin I would swear thats the lathe I gave away 5 years ago. Got tired of trying to move it.

Exact lathe my Dad has in his shop! I have spent a lot hours playing on that thing, I am still terrible at it, looking forward to watching this clean up as Dad just told me the Lathe is mine.

Got the motor cleaned up and running on the pallet. Time to mount the whole thing on a heavy duty steel table that I was not using. Turns out, the table is warped from all the welding underneath it. So I had to shim the Lathe to get it in a non-stressed condition. Put a piece of aluminum in the lathe then took a test cut, it’s straight within .0001 and the motor reverses perfectly.

Something old, something new. I decided to put a quick change tool holder on the machine. So I fabricated an aluminum T-nut and had to grind a little off the top of the compound to clear the tool post. The tool set came from www.littlemachineshop.com. They specialize in bench top machines and accessories.

It’s one of those things where you come across a piece of machinery and you’re getting it so cheap, although you don’t need it, you go ahead and buy it and see if you can put it to work. It will be great for aluminum, plastic, and brass. I will not be single pointing on it because changing the gears is too much work. I have it set for .007 cross travel per revolution which is about half of the radius of my carbide tip. I’ll be using it to make spacers, bushings, extra thick washers etc. Also, this machine along with my benchtop CNC lathe, and my 3-D printer will be added to the list of machines that will be going home with me when I retire🤓

The big Atlas gets its first paying job! Facing off stamped brass washers to get them flat for a nylon valve seat seal. $20 baby! Oh ya! 🤓

I was working on my Dad's Atlas on day and I left the Key in the chuck... My BIL (40year machinist) tells me when he was an apprentice if they had did that, they would wear the chuck key on a chain around their next for the rest of the day....

That's cool you saved it. I learned on a craftsmen version of one of these from my grandfather.

We had the same thing when I first started and the first time you see one fly you don't forget it! We used to make everyone here wear their first scrap on chain around their neck for the rest of the day as a joke...

how were you setting the washers in the chuck to get them straight? I have used parallels behind the part on the face of the chuck in the past.. was curious if you had a different method
I used a piece of 5/8” HSS which fit perfectly.

That's always fun when you forget to pull them out
