Bet a smaller prop on the 200 will make it work but thats another story. These were set up to be similar geared for comparision it sounded like IMO these days 2 strokes dont get the respect they deserve and if i ever went outboard i would take a 300 2 stroke over any 4 stroke due to power to weight ratio.

Just looked up the 2 stroke Evinrude specs.... a 2.17 gear ratio in the lowers and weighs 530lbs. Vs the Mercury 200 Optimax of a 1.75 ratio and 505lbs. Big difference on the gear ratio there.

That was a Yamaha F200. 200hp, 1.86.1 ratio and 487lbs.

The Rude is a E-Tec G2. 150hp, 2.17.1 ratio and 496lbs.

With that ratio difference and only 1" of prop pitch difference, they are no where equal. Since both make the rated HP above 5000rpm the gear ratio is what made all the difference. Low gear ratio and small prop pitch equal huge low end torque.

Typical OEM tests, cheating and stacking the deck with smoke and mirrors. Regardless, all of today OB manufacturers make a great motor.

We loved the Etec we had on our RIB. The dealer talked us out of a Honda because of the maintenance compared to the Etec. 300 hours before you have to do a thing.

Great motors, a little stinky if the wind is at your back and you are idling, but otherwise really awesome.

I know. I used the Merc as a comparison cause most are familiar with them. I did see on the Yamaha specs it's 200hp came in at 5k rpm. Not sure about the Rude nor, more importantly, the torque curve of either.

Gotcha. For another fact on the Merc...1.75 vs 1.62 requires at least 2" prop pitch difference to be theoretically equal on the final gear ratio. For this video test the Yamaha should have had 13-14 pitch prop not a 17.

The new Evinrudes are really nice engines..... just heavy. I'll take one over any nash rambler 4 stroke any day.

You are correct. It was an Evenrude test and they tilted it in their favor. But.... I still think the 2 stroke would have won :)
